That was before the fascist Spanish peasant born Josemaria Escriva founded the demonic Opus Dei took over the Vatican in the latter part of the 20th century wherein they orchestrated the longest Hollywood-style papacy of John Paul II, hence he is Opus Dei’s Frankenstein pope creation, with no heart of compassion and no compunction for thousands of victims of his JP2 Army – John Paul II Pedophile Priests Army named aptly after him who said nothing and did nothing during his Hollywood rock-star globetrotting years. She’s got a point. Why does Hollywood celebrate financial fraudsters when just about the entire country has been victimized by them?
If you live in Los Angeles, or elsewhere in the USA or in the world, and are planning a “pilgrimage” to the Oratory of St. Joseph or flying to the Vatican, DON'T GO and instead ponder on donating that money to the Red Cross or your local charity - or sponsor a poor student and pay for his or her school supplies and school lunch for a year, or feed a homeless person for a year at McDonald's prepaid by you, instead of flying to Montreal to see the Oratory or the Vatican Mammon Beast - and God will listen more to your prayers in your act of mercy which is better than feeding the Vatican Mammon Beast or St. Joseph Oratory Mammon Beast copying the Vatican Titanic sinking in moral bankruptcy. http://popecrimes.blogspot.ca/2012/12/oratory-of-st-joseph-copy-vatican.html

Even if the Vatican has some history with ancient Rome, it does not give Catholics the right to go on using Rome’s name because Rome is now a secular city. Children of this generation and all generations to come should NEVER pray to John Paul II who historically was too preoccupied with his narcissistic self-glory as he traveled around the world promoting his greatness and the Vatican Bank through his and his entourage’s diplomatic immunity. The danger of faith is to believe something that isn't true – either because you need to believe it or because you can't face the truth.
That's when faith becomes delusion and denial.
It happened Friday, when celestial faith was projected onto a mortal, a priest, who pleaded no contest to sexually molesting a 13-year-old girl – even as the priest's friends watched the proceedings in court.
The Rev. Uriel Ojeda, once the shining star of the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, was handcuffed and taken into custody after accepting a plea for forcing himself on a young girl. It was a cold legal conclusion to a tragedy of faith placed too fervently in one young man. (See full article below by Marcos Breton)

First Lady Michelle Obama announces the winner of Academy Award for Best Picture, Argo, live from the Diplomatic Room of the White House, Feb. 24, 2013.
Box officeThe film earned $136,024,128 in North America, and $96,300,000 in other countries, for a worldwide total of $232,324,128.
Home mediaThe film was released in North America on February 19, 2013 on DVD, Blu-ray Disc and with an UltraViolet digital copy.
AccoladesThe film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won three, for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Achievement in Editing. Affleck was not nominated for Best Director, and following the announcement of the nominations, Bradley Cooper, whose film, Silver Linings Playbook was nominated in several categories, declared: "Ben Affleck got robbed." This opinion is shared by the ceremony's host Seth MacFarlane and Quentin Tarantino.
Entertainment Weekly wrote about this controversy:
Standing in the Golden Globe pressroom with his directing trophy, Affleck acknowledged that it was frustrating not to get an Oscar nod when many felt he deserved one. But he's keeping a sense of humor. "I mean, I also didn't get the acting nomination," he pointed out. "And no one's saying I got snubbed there!"
The Man Who Would Be a Saint, John Paul II and the Era of Scandal
It was the scandal, not the rape and molestation of children that was the main problem, according to the Pope. Indeed, he didn't mention the pain, suffering and loss of faith among victims, nor did he use words like "abuse" or "rape." Instead he referred to "certain offenses" and "sins" and he said that America's bishops had two responsibilities in the face of the crisis -- to deal with problem priests and their victims and to address the damage done to society when the Church is swept by scandal.
By any measure, John Paul II's sentiments were focused primarily on the welfare of the Church. The problem of clergy abuse was, he said, a product of an American society that "needs much prayer -- lest it lose its soul." Prayer was the primary remedy recommended by John Paul II, but he also suggested temperance on the part of the mass media. "Evil can indeed be sensational," he wrote, "but the sensationalism surrounding it is always dangerous for morality." This point, echoed repeated complaints by priests and bishops who said the media and plaintiffs lawyers were exaggerating claims, stirring public animosity, and singling out Catholicism in a bigoted way.
Anyone who missed the Pope's point could turn to his spokesman Joaquín Navarro-Valls for clarification. "One would have to ask if the real culprit is not a society that is irresponsibly permissive, hyper-inflated with sexuality and capable of creating circumstances that induce even people who have received a sound moral formation to commit grave immoral acts."
The media came in for more papal scolding when John Paul II visited Denver in August 1993. At outdoor services for an international youth conference the Pope made his first public remarks on sexual abuse by clergy, acknowledging "the pain of the suffering and scandal caused by the sins of some ministers of the altar." In the same speech he also denounced abortion and euthanasia as a "slaughtering of the innocents." Turning to the scourge of urban violence, he noted that the media was partly responsible. Overall, he concluded, "America needs much prayer, lest it lose its soul."
In Denver the Pope was met by huge, adoring crowds of fervent Catholics who had come to Colorado from around the world. His criticism of the press prompted much applause, as did his attacks on alcohol, drugs, pornography, and "the moral evil which flows from personal choices." At various points he was interrupted by cheers of "John Paul II we love you" and, as usual, he responded by offering his love in return. In all, the visit was a triumph of inspiration for believers and a demonstration of John Paul II's persistent popularity. It also obscured the few signs of caution, if not dissent, expressed by American Church leaders. Cleveland bishop Anthony Michael Pilla actually rejected the idea of holding the Pope's youth rally in his diocese out of concern that a visiting youth might be sexually abused.
What Pilla knew was that the problem of sexually abusive clergy was much bigger and more widespread that anyone outside the church hierarchy imagined. Indeed, Catholicism had already entered an era when thousands of priests would be, in its own judgment "credibly accused" and tens of thousands of children would be identified as victims. In time, the scandal would encircle the globe. More than $3 billion would be spent on legal fees and settlements and more than 500 priests would be jailed.
After he appeared in Denver the Pope would receive Milwaukee Archbishop Rembert Weakland in Rome at one of the "ad limina" visits that all bishops are required to attend. As bishop Weakland told me, he used that visit to personally lobby the pontiff for action against accused priests in his diocese. He received no response. In July of 1996 Weakland wrote to John Paul II's second-in-command, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger asking for help with two priests who were the subjects of sworn statements accusing them of sexually abusing minors. One, Lawrence Murphy, had long worked at a residential school for the deaf where he had sexually abused about two hundred boys. Weakland said that he had become aware of these cases within the past year and was turning to Ratzinger because the offenses were "under your jurisdiction."
Anyone considering the news that the current pope, Francis I, has approved John Paul II for sainthood, should also consider that more than anyone, John Paul II had access to information about the full scope of the abuse problem and the greatest power to address it. For more than two decades he granted clergy a kind of due process that is unseen in civil courts, allowing them years to resist efforts to strip them of their priestly rank. Too often, more children were victimized while the pope's bureaucracy moved slowly, and invisibly. Too often, abusers like Murphy died before being held accountable.
Following John Paul II's death, Joseph Ratzinger succeeded him as Pope Benedict XVI. He went much further in his public statements regarding sexual abuse by priests and under his watch Church authorities in some countries improved their response to complaints. However the scandal continued as lawyers and the media forced a stream of incriminating documents out of various ecclesiastical offices. Most recently we learned that Weakland's successor in Milwaukee, then-Archbishop Timothy Dolan, received approval from Benedict's curia to shift $56 million in funds in order to protect it from the legal claims made by Catholic men and women who, as children, were molested and raped by priests. Dolan, now cardinal of the Archdiocese of New York responded to charges of wrongdoing with a single word: "malarkey." Benedict, exhausted by the crisis that he would not resolve, became the first pope to resign in five centuries. He now lives as pope emeritus.
Francis I succeeded Benedict amid the hope that he would breathe some humanity into the papacy. He has done so, in a halting fashion. His decision to elevate John Paul II was probably inevitable, given the man's popularity among the faithful and the fact that the former pope began his journey along the official road to sainthood before his failure in the abuse crisis was widely and fully understood. Today we have the forces of the secular society -- the media and the judicial system -- which John Paul II regarded with frequent disdain, to thank for a fuller, understanding of the moral failings of the Church and its leaders. They have been brought down to size by the truth, even though some might become saints.
CHICAGO (CBS) — The Vatican on Friday cleared the late Pope John Paul II for sainthood.
The news was greeted with joy among the Chicago Polish community, who also recalled with fondness the historic trip John Paul took to Chicago more than 30 years ago.
However, the news is not without some controversy, as CBS 2′s Chris Martinez reports.
The Survivors Network Of Those Abused By Priests said John Paul did nothing to stop the abuse crimes at the hands of priests in Chicago and across the United States.
By Kaitlynn Riely / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
One was pope for only a handful of years, 1958 to 1963, but he opened a council whose effects have lasted much longer. The other led the Roman Catholic Church for nearly three decades, 1978 to 2005, defining the role of pope for a generation.
Popes John XXIII and John Paul II lived in different times and faced different challenges, said Pittsburgh Bishop David A. Zubik, but they shared something.
"They had a charisma that made them the right person at the right time," he said.
Now, they'll share something else: At the same time Friday, both men were cleared for sainthood.
The current Pope Francis announced that John Paul II and John XXIII would be canonized. No date has been set for the official ceremonies, but they are expected to occur by the end of the year. ...
However, not everyone greeted the news positively.
Barbara Blaine, founder of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, called the canonization "rubbing salt into the wounds" of those affected by the clerical sex-abuse scandal.
"We believe that's one more sign that church officials are doing one thing and saying the other," Ms. Blaine said.

The Vatican has fast-tracked Pope John Paul II for sainthood, even though a significant portion of the clerical sex abuse scandal happened on his watch. This is concerning, but not surprising, given the Church’s history of protecting priests instead of children and patting itself on the back while willfully failing to take meaningful action regarding abusive priests or abuse survivors.
According to an Associated Press (AP) story, Pope Francis signed a decree on Friday declaring John Paul for sainthood, culminating a “fast-track” process that informally began at John Paul’s 2005 funeral , where thousands at St. Peter’s Square chanted “Santo subito” – Sainthood now! John Paul’s sainthood was initially fast-tracked by his successor, Pope Benedict XVI, when he “dispensed with the traditional five-year waiting period and allowed the beatification process to begin weeks after John Paul’s death,” according to the AP story. The canonization ceremony may take place by the end of 2013 and reports speculate that the ceremony could occur as soon as December 8.
Fast-tracking. Yes, the Vatican has the power to move things along quickly.
Or very slowly – or not at all – as documents released last week by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee starkly show. According to those documents, the Vatican delayed the requested laicization of admitted Archdiocese sexual offender priests for several years while children continued to be abused and at risk. But when asked by then Archbishop of Milwaukee Timothy Dolan to “proceed with alienation of property” owned by the Archdiocese – approximately $57 million – for transfer to a cemetery trust and offer “an improved protection of these funds from any legal claim and liability,” the Vatican acted and approved the transfer in a little more than one month. This maneuver was done as the Archdiocese prepared to file for bankruptcy. Clerical sex abuse survivors and their attorneys have accused Dolan of bankruptcy fraud and moving money to protect it from abuse survivors.

A detailed "list of issues" has been released by the Geneva-based Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) before the appearance of officials from the Holy See. The session is expected early next year.
The decision to ask senior Roman Catholic clerics to hand over confidential internal documents to such a high-profile inquiry marks a fresh initiative in the global debate over clerical abuse. It will present the new pontiff, Pope Francis, with a direct challenge to provide records of financial compensation given to victims of sexual abuse and disclose whether secret deals were made to preserve the church's reputation.
The UN committee's document is headed: "List of issues to be taken up in connection with the consideration of the second periodic report of the Holy See." Paragraph 11 of the CRC's document states: "In the light of the recognition by the Holy See of sexual violence against children committed by members of the clergy, brothers and nuns in numerous countries around the world, and given the scale of the abuses, please provide detailed information on all cases of child sexual abuse committed by members of the clergy, brothers and nuns or brought to the attention of the Holy See."
The information sought includes cases where priests were transferred to other parishes, "where instructions were given not to report such offences, and at which level of the clergy", and "where children were silenced in order to minimise the risk of public disclosure". The CRC has also asked for "the investigations and legal proceedings conducted under penal canon law against perpetrators of sexual crimes" and "the number of child victims who have been given assistance for recovery, including psychological support and social reintegration and have received financial compensation".
The committee has been lobbied by international victims' groups as well as the UK-based National Secular Society. Keith Porteous Wood, the society's director who gave evidence in Geneva, told the Guardian: "Pope Francis will be judged on his ability to clean up child abuse and the Vatican bank's money laundering and tax evasion. He cannot rely on regulators' patience lasting much longer on either."
The Vatican has replied to past UN requests to respond to general concerns about sex abuse by Catholic clergy. The list of questions demands far more details.
Shortly after becoming pope, Francis announced that he had urged the Vatican to deal with the problem. A spokesman said in April that the church would "act decisively in sex abuse cases, above all promoting measures to protect minors, assistance for all those who in the past suffered such violence, [and] necessary measures against the guilty".
The CRC has been pressing the Vatican for greater disclosure over the issue of clerical abuse for years. Barbara Blaine of the Survivors Network of Those Abused By Priests said last month: "The fact that a UN committee has called the Vatican to account for its record on children's rights, including the right to be free from sexual violence and exploitation, is giving survivors all over the world hope."
UN tells Vatican to hand over details of child sex abuse cases
A United Nations committee has demanded that the Vatican reveal potentially explosive details about the systematic cover-up of child sex abuse by Catholic clergy.
The UN's Committee on the Rights of the Child released its demands for information from the Holy See on Tuesday.
The committee said that "in the light of the recognition by the Holy See of sexual violence against children committed by members of the clergy, brothers and nuns in numerous countries around the world, and given the scale of the abuses", the Vatican should provide detailed information on all cases of child sexual abuse committed by clergy.
The Vatican was told to show whether it had implemented measures "to ensure that no member of the clergy currently accused of sexual abuse be allowed to remain in contact with children," amid claims from around the world that bishops often moved abusive priests from one parish to another.
The UN committee demanded to know about specific cases in which bishops or other Catholic leaders had failed to report suspected abuse to the police.
The Vatican was also urged to divulge details of its investigation of alleged sexual abuse and the outcome of those investigations, including any financial compensation or psychological counselling for victims.
The committee wants to know what measures the Holy See has taken "to prevent further sexual violence from taking place in institutions run by the Catholic Church." The Vatican has until January to compile all the information, in time for an open meeting of the UN committee in Geneva at which Vatican officials will be questioned.
Despite being a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Holy See had largely ignored requests for information, said Keith Porteous Wood, the executive director of the National Secular Society, who gave evidence to the committee last month.
"One of the requirements of a signatory is to compile a five yearly report on compliance – or in the Vatican's case non-compliance – with the convention. The Holy See has grossly failed to do this for something like 12 years," he told The Daily Telegraph."They allowed sexual abuse on an unbelievable scale and it hasn't all come out yet – we expect many, many more cases to emerge in the developing world."
Pope Francis's apparent determination to crack down on allegations of corruption and money-laundering within the Vatican bank gave hope that he might take a tough line on sexually abusive clergy, Mr Porteous Wood said.
"I think it's a good sign," he said. "Child abuse is a major issue, along with corruption, that he needs to sort out. His legacy will be judged, I think, on his ability to deal with these immensely difficult problems."
Geoffrey Robertson QC, the human rights lawyer, who has strongly criticised the Catholic Church's cover-up of sex abuse scandals around the world, said: "The committee's enquiries will inevitably lead it to conclude that the Vatican has broken multiple articles of the convention on a huge scale in many countries. The result in human suffering is incalculable.
"Francis's papacy could well be defined by the world's verdict on his response - more handwringing apologies or calls for a line to be drawn under the past will no longer wash.
"He will fail unless he initiates bold tangible actions, for example lifting the veil of secrecy that has protected so many clerical rapists, engaging secular authorities and offering rather than resisting appropriate compensation."

The Francis revolution: No flattery, no valets, no pomp, no ceremony (This is a Vatican LIE because Pope Francis will use the canonization of John Paul II and John XXIII as papl flattery, papal pomp, papal ceremony, papal cloning of God the Christ, HELLO!??!!)VATICAN CITY
From his choice of residence to the break with past practices: Francis’ sobriety is taking over the Vatican
It’s a pleasant sultry summer afternoon in Rome and two Swiss guards and a Vatican policeman, all in uniform, stand in front of the entrance to St. Martha’s House, home to the Pope and another forty or so bishops, monsignors and lay people who work in the Vatican. It is a sign the Holy See’s top man is about. The white and yellow flag with the Vatican crest hangs limply in front of the windows on the second floor of the anonymous rectangular building which John Paul II had built in the mid 90’s to give cardinals taking part in the Conclave a decent place to stay.
Now we are in Francis’ living quarters. Guests take the semi-circular staircase that leads down to the austere and slightly cold hall. There, standing behind a bar is an Oriental looking layman in a tobacco-coloured suit. All is silent. One can feel it’s summer even inside St. Martha’s House and guests know Bergoglio could pop out from just about anywhere, at any moment: from the elevator, from an opening door, from the dining hall or from one of the sitting rooms. Everyone needs to look their best when the Pope is about.
In the hall way there is another Swiss Guard and Vatican policeman in plain dress. “I was seated in a sitting room with green upholstery. The Pope appeared out of nowhere, alone, without any butlers or secretaries and he was carrying an envelope with some rosaries,” says an anonymous source who was received by the Pope in a private audience. “At the end of our meeting he opened the door for me himself and showed me the way out.” No other scene can better describe the change that is taking place in the Holy See. St. Martha’s House is half-way between a hotel and a pilgrim’s residence: there is almost no trace of that courtly feeling you get in the apostolic palace with its renaissance-like dignity. St. Martha’s House is the ideal starting point to our journey through the most important changes introduced by the Argentinean Pope, the small and big breaks with protocol and their significance. Francis’ choice to stay put in the residence where he stayed as a cardinal elector during the Conclave was taken for “psychiatric reasons” because he did not want to be isolated. As he wrote to his friend, the Argentinean priest Enrico Martinez, also known as “Quique”: “I am visible to people and I lead a normal life. A public Mass in the morning, I eat at table with everyone…”

Vatican Bank’s Bishop accountant caught money laundering €20M and it surpass the Da Vinci Code intrigue. Vatican greedy Mammon never sleeps and never stops http://popecrimes.blogspot.ca/2013/06/vatican-greedy-mammon-vatican-banks.html)
Oh, man, New Pope is doing that thing again, where he says stuff that makes us like him even if he is that head of a big corrupt institution that does evilnasty things. But we give him credit for trying to turn some of that down, what with the living in a little apartment and not eating gold and stuff, and so let’s have a little cheer for some comments Saturday that would probably bring a smile to the face of his simple-living namesake. In a talk to trainee priests and nuns, New Pope said that they should avoid fancy material possessions and instead concentrate on helping the poor. That shouldn’t be news — it’s no “New Pope Blesses Bikers” — but considering that the papacy is notorious for Prada slippers and a level of décor that Donald Trump considers a tad overdone, it’s news.
Italian investigators have said that the Vatican bank operated in a way that facilitated money laundering, according to leaked papers quoted by two Italian newspapers today following a three-year inquiry.
The bank, officially known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR in Italian), did not carry out enough checks on its clients and account holders were allowed to transfer large sums on behalf of others.
"There is a high risk that the way the IOR operates, without specifying its real clients, can be used as a screen to hide illegal operations," prosecutors wrote in a document that was quoted by Corriere della Sera.
They also faulted Italian banks that accepted transfers from the IOR for failing to probe the origin of the money, which is then moved into other banks.
"The IOR can easily become a channel for the laundering of money with a criminal origin, they said.
Holding the bank to account
Crisis at the IOR
Baron Ernst von Freyberg insists that the so-called Vatican Bank is a “well-managed and clean financial institution” that merely suffers from a bad reputation linked to old scandals. The German aristocrat and industrialist was hired last February after an extensive search to be the president of the bank – officially named the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR). And he recently began a media campaign to convince people that he and his team were well on the road to bringing greater transparency and propriety to the 71-year-old institution.
But a new and embarrassing scandal has caused a major obstacle to that journey and this past week the president was forced to admit that still more drastic measures were needed to truly clean up the IOR’s bad image and improve efforts undertaken in the past three years to combat money laundering and provide greater transparency.
“It is clear today that we need new leadership to increase the pace of this transformation process,” von Freyberg said in a communiqué issued late on Monday. The unusually timed note announced the sudden and surprising resignations of the two men in charge of the IOR’s daily operations – bank director Paolo Cipriani and his deputy, Massimo Tulli. Both stepped down (or were more likely forced out) after six years in their posts.
The resignations came just five days after Pope Francis established a five-member special commission of inquiry to get to the bottom of problems linked to the IOR’s structure and functioning. But even more poignantly they occurred only three days after Mgr Nunzio Scarano, a Vatican official who has at least two accounts at the IOR, was arrested along with two accomplices after being suspected of trying to smuggle €20 million (£17m) from Switzerland into Italy.
The arrest of Mgr Scarano, a former banker and now a chief accountant at the Administration for the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (Apsa), is said to have especially perturbed the Pope, who has often warned clerics (and others) to be wary of “money worshipping”. In fact, the Vatican had already suspended the monsignor several weeks ago after it learned he was also under investigation over financial dealings in his native Salerno, a port city just south of Naples.
The cardinals who elected Pope Francis gave him a mandate to reform the Roman Curia and the IOR, two institutions that last year’s VatiLeaks scandal portrayed as tinged with corruption and mismanagement. That was not the first time, either, that the bank, founded in 1942 by Pius XII as a private organisation providing religious institutions with banking facilities, had been mired in scandal. In 1982, it was implicated in a major political and financial crisis when the Banco Ambrosiano, of which it was the major shareholder, collapsed with US$4.7 billion debts. More recently, in 2010, the then president of the IOR, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, was investigated over a money-laundering scandal and then later stepped down after a no-confidence vote by the bank’s directors. He claimed he was targeted because he wanted transparency and wanted to target the non-religious holders of bank accounts.
Pope Francis may well wish to close the bank but he would face stiff opposition from many people, not least the institute’s 114 employees and the many religious orders that keep their money there. For now the Jesuit Pope is working with existing Vatican staff and their methods to deal with the difficult situation he inherited. His first move, several weeks ago, was to see to that Mgr Battista Ricca, the director of the Santa Marta residence where he lives, be named as “prelate” ad interim of the IOR. The Commission of Cardinals (headed by Secretary of State Bertone) appoints the prelate to be its liaison with the lay-run board of directors (headed by von Freyberg) and he attends the meetings of both groups.
Next, Francis chose five Vatican insiders to be part of his newly set up commission of inquiry. The president of the group is Italian Cardinal Raffaele Farina SDB, 79, head of the Vatican Library. Spanish Bishop Juan Ignacio Arrieta, a 62-year-old Opus Dei canon lawyer who is secretary at the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, is the commission’s coordinator. There is also French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, 70, one of the Holy See’s best diplomats and currently its top official for interreligious dialogue, as well as a member of the cardinals’ commission that oversees the IOR. Mary Glendon, 74, the American lawyer who heads the Pontifical Academy for Social Sciences and is a former US ambassador to the Holy See, is also a member. And finally, Mgr Peter Wells, 50, the American who serves as “assessore” or No. 3 in the Secretariat of State, serves as the commission’s secretary. Glendon and Wells have strong personal connections to fellow American Carl Anderson, head of the very wealthy Knights of Columbus and a member of the IOR board of directors. It goes without saying that all five of these people have personal bank accounts at the IOR.
Anyone hoping that the commission of inquiry might be composed of people with outside objectivity and no inside personal interest would be very disappointed with this group. On the other hand, those likely to be most threatened by such a commission and the Pope’s reforms might feel some reassurance by the names on this list.
Pope Francis has asked the commission of inquiry to present him with some canonical and legal options for restructuring the IOR so that its mission and ideals are more reflective of a Church than a bank. The Vatican has always denied allegations that the IOR has been used as an offshore financial institution (or worse, for money laundering) and most recently affirmed again that only its employees, religious orders and church officials can hold accounts. But many people are sceptical. That is because among the account holders there are also the papal gentleman, mostly well-to-do Italian businessmen, industrialists and aristocrats who assist at formal papal ceremonies. Over the years some of them have fallen foul of the law. Francesco La Motta, for instance, was arrested in mid-June for his alleged role in the disappearance of more than €10m (£8.5m) from an Interior Ministry account that he oversaw. The former high-ranking Italian secret-service agent has been a papal gentleman since 2007. Another, Angelo Balducci, was arrested in 2010 on corruption charges linked to building contracts. He was quietly removed from the ranks of the papal gentlemen. La Motta will probably meet the same fate. Both men had accounts at the IOR that provided a convenient way to hide money.
IOR officials say they have begun adopting more stringent international anti-money-laundering protocols and Baron von Freyberg has even hired outside consultants from the United States to ensure they are implemented correctly. That will be essential in helping Pope Francis face perhaps his toughest challenge, the vast network of family and friends that make up the Vatican’s tightly knit workforce. Many have followed in the footsteps of fathers and grandfathers, cousins and uncles, as Vatican employees. Take the papal nuncio in Britain, Archbishop Antonio Mennini. His late father was the IOR’s long-time managing director. And his brother Paolo is currently in charge of the Apsa wing where Mgr Scarano has been working for many years. These types of intertwining relationships are typical of the complicated culture of the Vatican, and which can cause people to be resistant to reform.
So what is likely to happen? Most people believe Pope Francis will move like a good Jesuit superior. He will listen to the suggestions from his cardinal-advisers, as well as the commission of inquiry and other officials at the IOR. Then he will make up his own mind. Among his options might be to restructure the IOR into a sort of credit union, perhaps with more international and less Italian oversight. Another possibility is that he could choose to divest the Holy See of its entire interest in the institute’s ownership or management. In this case, perhaps he could even allow some Catholic group with a proven track record in financial operations (like the Knights of Columbus) to take control of the IOR. Of course, the most radical action that Papa Francesco could take would be to close the IOR all together and leave its clients to deposit their assets in regular banks.
Various cardinals and Vatican officials have said with assurance that closure is not an option. But they are the same people who think that the Pope will eventually move into the Apostolic Palace.
A little less talk and a lot more action: Francis’ grand reform of the Vatican bank and Secretariat of StateVATICAN CITY
The work to transform the Curia and the IOR has begun
“So Your Eminence, did you get the job done?” Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, whose days as Secretary of State are numbered, knows that when Francis calls in person to check on the progress of a task he has set, there’s no beating around the bush. The cardinal usually has his audience with the Pope on Mondays. But a couple of days later, Francis calls Bertone himself – as the Vatican Secretary of State confided to figures close to him – to make sure that what was discussed is actually being put into action. Whoever thinks the Pope next door - who shows so much humanity and solidarity to those around him, bending down and hugging them during his audiences - has failed in his role as leader, is mistaken.
The second stop-off point on our journey through the small and big changes in Francis’ pontificate is to do with his leadership style. One Vatican prelate said that “in the almost eight years of Benedict XVI’s reign, the people working with him acted differently each time the Pope gave instructions for action to be taken. The Pope would think a nomination had been made, when in fact a series of obstacles had prevented it from happening. Some time later, Benedict XVI would find out that the process had been left unfinished and postponed…” There have been cases where nominations have been published in the Acta Apostolicae Sedis – where all official decisions are published – without the interested party even being informed. This is because the head of the relevant dicastery did not agree with the nomination and tried to stop the Secretary of State from making it official, despite the Pope’s approval.
“Everyone in the Vatican recognises Benedict XVI’s greatness, the depth of his vision for the Church and the humility he showed by resigning; but you’ll have a hard time finding anyone in the Holy See who did not think the Curia’s work left a lot to be desired. This is evident when one looks at the Via Crucis of Ratzinger’s pontificate and the fact he had to personally intervene on a number of occasions to cover up for the failings of those who worked with him. For example when the excommunication of Holocaust denier, Bishop Williamson, was revoked.

On Friday, Pope Francis fast-tracked approval for the sainthood of two recent pontiffs: Pope John Paul II, who presided over the Church at the end of the Cold War, and Pope John XXIII, who held the liberalizing Second Vatican Council half a century ago. To do so, Pope Francis undercut the Vatican’s traditional bureaucracy and its complex protocols regarding the proof of miracles required to canonize saints. For the Argentine cleric, who assumed the papacy’s top role earlier this year, the move is just the latest sign of his reformist impulses.
Far removed from the realms of saints and miracles, Pope Francis, it seems, has sought to shake up some of the Vatican’s more earthly institutions. The past two weeks have been filled with drama for the Vatican Bank, a tiny organization operating from within the Vatican walls that has been time and again a source of scandal and embarrassment for the Catholic Church. The latest intrigue began with the arrest on June 28 by Italian police of a senior monsignor, Nunzio Scarano, for allegedly planning to smuggle €20 million to Italy in a private jet. Pope Francis then ordered an unprecedented review of the bank by an independent commission. On July 1, came the surprise resignation of the bank’s two top managers. Director General Paolo Cipriani and his deputy, Massimo Tulli, who have led the bank for almost a decade, “have decided that this decision would be in the best interest of the Institute and the Holy See,” said a Vatican statement.
While the Vatican presented their resignation as voluntary, Pope Francis’ move to create a review commission, handpicked by him, with full powers to request documents and question people on the activities of the bank, was clearly seen as a vote of no confidence towards the bank’s management. That is a major step toward establishing better financial transparency for the bank, which is formally known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR) and has long been criticized for its secrecy and lack of accountability. Vatican authorities “have come a long way in a very short period of time” according to Moneyval, a European financial watchdog based in Strasbourg, France. “Catholics around the world have felt Pope Francis’s warmth,” said a Vatican source, referring the simple, heartfelt style of the Argentine pontiff. “But also in the Vatican someone is starting to feel the heat.”

It appears Pope Francis truly wants to change the Catholic Church. He's reforming the Vatican Bank first, but he's also circumventing the old guard wherever he can. The establishment is up in arms.
A cardinal in Rome earns about ?3,000 [euros] ($3,888) a month, even less than a pastor in Germany. But a cardinal's life in Rome is a lot more expensive -- with visits to restaurants and shopping at boutiques for the upscale clothing men of the church are expected to wear, not to mention their jewelry and the antiques they display in their apartments. So it's good to have friends who can treat you or otherwise provide support now and then.
Friends are also happy to give a cardinal a hand -- and not just out of religious considerations. A cardinal can be helpful in both political and business terms. So it's not surprising that a symbiotic relationship between parts of the Curia and the upper class around the world has formed -- one that brings together the establishment, luxury and power. It's a nice little tradition that new Pope Francis would like to put an end to. For the Catholic establishment, though, it is nothing less than a catastrophe.

VATICAN CITY - Pope Francis says the Catholic church needs to renew structures to accord with "the places, the times."
Francis has been waging a campaign to root out corruption and power plays in the Vatican's bureaucracy and to keep sight of what is essential in the church he was elected in March to lead.
The Argentine-born pontiff offered the encouragement for renewal in a homily during Mass Saturday at the Vatican City hotel where he lives. Francis told Catholics "not to be afraid of renewing some structures" to accord with "the places, the times" and the people, but he didn't specify what needed to be changed.

Pope Francis on Saturday said Catholics should not be afraid of renewing “old and flimsy structures” in the Church, as he plans a major overhaul of the scandal-ridden Vatican bureaucracy and bank.
“In Christian life and in Church life too there are old and flimsy structures. We need to renew them,” the pope said in his homily at a private mass for Swiss Guards, Vatican radio reported on its website.
“We should not be afraid of allowing the flimsy structures that imprison us to fall down,” he said.
“The Church has always allowed itself to be renewed... That is how the Church has developed, leaving it to the Holy Spirit to renew these structures. We should not be afraid of this,” the pope was quoted as saying.
Francis, a moderate conservative elected by a conclave of cardinals in March, has launched an investigation into the Vatican bank and has ordered a group of top cardinals to propose ways of reforming the Vatican administration at a meeting planned for October.

Why Does Hollywood Celebrate Fraudsters Who Rip Us Off?
She’s got a point. Why does Hollywood celebrate financial fraudsters when just about the entire country has been victimized by them? (COMMENT: The same can be said of Pope Francis and the Vatican who celebrate John Paul II, Opus Dei Bishop Finn, Cardinals and Bishops who were “fraudsters” who aided and abetted pedophile priests “when just about the entire country or Catholic Church has been victimized by them?”
One Nation Under Fraud
The idea that we can reinvent ourselves and shimmy up the social and economic ladder runs deep in American culture, tapped most famously in The Great Gatsby(recently adapted in a film starring DiCaprio, whose roles as the conman-charmer include the fictional Jay Gatsby and Frank Abagnale, the real-life forger of Catch Me if You Can). It’s as old as the canny Dutch traders who finagled their way into property in early New Amsterdam and morphed into America‘s social elite. We’re a country founded in no small part by smugglers, pirates, slavers, and financial fraudsters of every description.
But unlike the case of Australia, our religious traditions run almost as deep as our worship of money. Puritan preachers and historians threw a cloak of morality over this festival of flimflam and taught us that he who has the money must be favored by God — a god who eventually took on a code name: the Market. Guided by an invisible hand, the West was settled and the railroads were built and if large numbers of people were hustled — or worse — in the process, at least we had a shot at upward mobility amid the ruckus. So the story went.
Certainly this tradition explains part of our fascination — and acceptance — of con artists. But Hollywood added its own hypnotic magic to the mix.
Martin Scorsese is a product of New York’s Little Italy of the 1940s, where certain energetic men broke the bounds of working-class drudgery to become celebrated mobsters. As a boy, Scorsese could not help but be awed by the swaggering swindlers who never suffered humiliation from the factory boss. In reality, it was Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal which did the most to lift New York City and neighborhoods like Little Italy out of the Depression. But WPA workers weren’t as sexy as mobsters, and in the era of the blacklist, they were anything but likely objects for a movie. Scorsese became entranced by characters from humble places who got their piece of the American pie by playing the right con.
The little boy grew up to give America a body of work enamored with macho crime culture. Scorsese’s first foray into mainstream movie-making, The Color of Money, celebrates of the romance of the pool shark. He followed that success with Goodfellas and Casino, two violent gangster movies that made crime feel glamorous and guilt-free. The hustler was now a rock star, a celebrity, the man to root for, even in his excesses — and of course, he was always a man.
This romance of the swindler, courtesy of Scorsese and Coppola, has permeated American popular culture so profoundly that it now dominates even the daytime soap opera. “General Hospital,” the 50-year-old grande dame of daytime, is now populated by more mobsters than medical personnel. The mob boss has become the romantic hero for America‘s stay-at-home moms.
