it was difficult to live with this ostracism
, André Samson still continued his work at the Oratory, a religious institution
to which he was very attached.
On Sunday, the
vice-rector of the Oratory, Pierre Dufour, announced that he is fired.
"They told me I did not corresponded to the image of the Saint Joseph's

It’s shocking and aggressive, but the ad attacking the Conservatives over cuts to the environment is supposed to serve as a wake-up call to Canadians, says the regional executive vice president of the Public Service Alliance of Canada behind the ad.
“There’s a shock effect to it,” Larry Rousseau said in an interview on the Global News program The West block with Tom Clark.
“When you hear an alarm go off in the building, it’s aggressive isn’t it? And you want it to go off.”
The ad found on the website notothecuts.ca shows masked men in jackboots kicking down a woman’s door to the sounds of thumping music. The men go on to pour a bitumen-like substance into her fish tank, break her potted plants and even throw a lit cigar into her glass of water.
Rousseau said the ads are supposed to sound the alarm about environmental deregulation found in Conservative budgets.
“When you’ve taken 99.5 and 99. 7 per cent of our lakes and rivers no longer subject to environmental regulation at the federal level, this is serious. Very serious stuff,” he said.
Rousseau said there is perhaps an “artistic value” to the ads which serve as an analogy of innocence.
“What can be more innocent than the environment that we wish to leave to our children and future generations?” he said.
“We’re looking out for the public interest, not the corporate interest.”
When asked about the implication of violence against women, Rousseau said no one was harmed in making the ads.
“This is why we’re talking about a wake-up call. We are on the front lines. Our inspectors, environmental inspectors on the front lines, are seeing what’s happening. We’re being removed from the equation, so we are out there saying if this continues, we will no longer be able to fill our mandate to protect the health and the safety of Canadians.”

Rousseau said ultimately the ads are about provoking debate.
“Canadians are going to have to make decisions in the coming months and years regarding where our country is going. That’s what we want. We want debate.”
In responding to the ads last week, NDP environment critic Megan Leslie said the videos are caricatures and a way to demonstrate frustrations with the government on environment.
“I think it’s a good reflection of how frustrated people are,” she said. “Whether it’s repealing the Environmental Assessment Act, whether it’s gutting the Fisheries Act and the Navigable Waters Protection Act, I understand why Canadians are concerned. I understand why they’re frustrated because all of this is happening without any consultation.”
But Conservative Michelle Rempel, who is parliamentary secretary to the environment minister, called the videos “embarrassing fear-mongering.”
“There are many members of the public service that I work with and have a great deal of respect for, that work closely with our government on carrying out its mandate on a daily basis. And I think that those members would both be very concerned and disappointed,” said Rempel.
She said the government has invested hundreds of millions of dollars into clean water initiatives, protected nearly 50 per cent more parkland than when they came into office, and has reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
“These are all very positive things that Canada can be proud of not just at home, but also internationally. So it’s very disappointing to see this type of video.”

Catholic order knew of alleged abuse: document

A Roman Catholic order in Quebec was aware of allegations of sexual abuse by brothers in the religious group, according to evidence discovered by Radio-Canada.A nine-page document, written by a long-term member of the Order of Holy Cross, chronicles specific allegations of abuse over the years at Montreal's College Notre Dame. The document lists a dozen Holy Cross brothers from various institutions.
It also outlines how alleged abusers at the order's flagship private school were not reported to the police and instead were allowed to stay on as teachers or support staff.
The document said in at least one case, the college paid $250,000 to buy the silence of a family that complained.
Wilson Kennedy, a former member of the order, says there was a culture of silence that protected alleged abusers. (CBC)Wilson Kennedy, a former member of the religious order, told Radio-Canada in an exclusive interview that while he was with the order he spoke to a Vatican official about the problem.
"Rome was informed and the Superior General asked me for clarification on several cases," Kennedy said.
He said there was a culture of silence that protected alleged abusers.
"You protect a group. Was it wrong? Yeah, it was wrong," Kennedy said.
The Order of Holy Cross was responsible for the care and education of thousands of Quebecers over the years. It ran institutions for people with handicaps, halfway houses and private colleges in Montreal and other areas of the province.
Allegations of abuse at College Notre Dame began to surface a couple of years ago. The college is right across the street from the iconic St. Joseph's Oratory, which was also built by the Order of Holy Cross.
A family has launched a lawsuit against the order and formed a support group.
The order said it won't comment while the case is still before the courts, but it did issue a statement saying it vigorously condemns all forms of misconduct.

Jonathan Kay: What’s wrong with remote native reserves? Let’s ask a veteran doctor who worked there
Excerpt:His name is Murray Trusler, a former doctor who began his career in Norway House, Manitoba in 1967-68. He retired in 2010, after serving as Chief of the Medical Staff at Moose Factory, where he worked serving the four First Nations communities on the west coast of James Bay, Moosonee and the two First Nations in Moose Factory.
Over his career, Dr. Trusler has watched many native communities fall into poverty. When he began at Norway House in 1967, many aboriginal Canadians still worked as true subsistence hunters, trappers and fishermen. But as modernization set in, the old ways were largely abandoned, and Natives increasingly became sedentary, like the rest of us. Men lost their traditional jobs as their economy lost its relevance in the modern world. Furs went out of style. Hunting and fishing could no longer support the growing population; and, out of necessity, social welfare became the new normal. Resource development passed them by, as most lacked the skills to participate.
In 1967-68, Dr. Trusler witnessed just one myocardial infarction at Norway House. Now, coronary artery disease is common on reserves. So is Hepatitis A, due to contaminated water supplies. Overcrowded, unhygienic living conditions also contribute to poor health. Dr. Trusler has very specific memories, from his Moose Factory days, of “25 people living in a three-bedroom house with one washroom.”
Forty-six years ago, Dr. Trusler remembers, the reserve at Norway House was dry: There was just one alcohol-related death that year (a poor fellow who’d gotten drunk on “moose milk” — fermented potatoes, raisins and yeast — in -40C weather). Now, alcoholism is epidemic, and a fifth to a quarter of kids on some reserves are born with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (a serious problem that no one wants to talk about, Dr. Trusler reports).
Like a lot of First Nations reform advocates, Dr. Trusler believes a major root of the problem on reserves is the communal land ownership model: Because most band members do not own their own home, they are denied pride in ownership, and cannot accumulate home equity over their lifetimes. As for the bands, they are dependent on the federal government for construction and repair funds. Many houses become mold traps with unventilated plywood basements, leaky roofs, and no weeping tiles (a particular problem for James Bay reserves, which are built on lands that are flood-prone or swampy). Some of these houses, he can attest, end up getting torn down within just a few years of their construction.
Doctors and other needed non-aboriginal professionals, meanwhile, get homes built to code with ventilated basements. These homes stay up in good shape for decades. This is a form of ongoing “housing apartheid” that no one ever talks about. That includes band leaders themselves, some of whom collaborate with shady contractors to throw up a high number of rickety non-code homes that everyone knows are shoddy. When the mold-infested buildings quickly become uninhabitable, the leaders can cynically just throw up their arms and claim they have a “housing crisis” — and demand help from Ottawa.
In a normal, capitalist-based Canadian housing market, no one would move into these homes — even putting aside the code issue — because no one would buy them. But residents of reserves typically must accept whatever housing their band leadership gives them, just as citizens of Soviet Russia had little choice about what crumbling apartment edifice they had to inhabit.
