A tale of two cities, London and Vatican City: two different approaches to investigating official cover-ups of child sexual abuse — the UK’s is serious; the Vatican’s is window dressing so far. The latest tale takes place over just a few days, yet shows the essential contrast between the UK’s parliamentary democracy and the Vatican’s absolute monarchy. London’s investigative approach is clearly designed to be expeditious, independent and transparent; the Vatican’s approach is clearly designed to be unending, controlled and secretive. London’s sex abuse commission is seeking to find out who did what when; the Vatican’s sex abuse commission is designed to find “best practices”, including some education and training programs. If the pope is serious, he needs to add to his commission some experienced, independent and proven members, like Fr. Thomas Doyle, Illinois Justice Anne Burke and former Irish President, Mary McAleese? Is Francis trying to avoid the truth? It seems he is.
It has been a tough week for Pope Francis with: (1) the UK investigation announcement, (2) the much and justifiably ridiculed all male “Pontifical Council on Women” with its launch in a night club atmosphere at Teatro Argentina in Rome, and (3) the release of Jesuit educated and former Wall Street lawyer, Gerald Posner’s explosive book, “God’s Bankers: A History of Money and Power at the Vatican” , (see at Amazon link [Amazon]). Posner, who was generally stonewalled by the Vatican leadership under both the ex-Pope and Francis, covers everything from unspeakable misdeeds involving Holocaust victims’ assets, to Vatican facilitation of bribery of Italian political leaders, to Pope Francis’ recent efforts to stop the financial bleeding.

Will Hillary Clinton, a Yale lawyer who worked on the Watergate Commission that transparently and independently investigated US President Nixon’s criminal cover-up conspiracy, be next to call for a national investigation commission in the USA? The following is a portion of the pope’s speech given yesterday at the close of the Vatican synod on the family:
The above quote from yesterday’s speech was omitted by the New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press, Reuters and Religion News Service. As has been true for this pontificate, only the good stuff gets reported.
Reuters: “Pope Francis Ends Synod By Excoriating Bishops With ‘Closed Hearts’ And ‘Heads In The Sand’ – In his final address, the pope appeared to criticize ultra-conservatives, saying Church leaders should confront difficult issues ‘fearlessly, without burying our heads in the sand.’ He said the synod had ‘laid bare the closed hearts which frequently hide even behind the Church’s teachings or good intentions, in order to sit in the chair of Moses and judge, sometimes with superiority and superficiality, difficult cases and wounded families.’”
AP: “Pope Francis takes swipe at conservative bishops as synod on families ends – Catholic bishops … endorsed Pope Francis’ call for a more merciful and less judgmental church.” The last sentence above was repeated.
NYTimes: “Amid Splits, Catholic Bishops Crack Open Door on Divorce – [and] appeared to give Pope Francis enough support to advance his vision of a more merciful church … Francis made a strong plea for inclusiveness in his final address to the assembly, known as a synod, which brought together about 270 bishops from around the world.” Again, the last sentence above was repeated.
RNS: “Tense Vatican summit ends by opening door for divorced, punting on welcome to gays – Francis himself seemed to signal his intentions as he delivered a powerful closing talk to the gathering on Saturday evening that denounced moral legalism in the church and declared that ‘the true defenders of doctrine are not those who uphold its letter, but its spirit.’” Again, the last sentence above was repeated.
WaPo: “Vatican synod on families offers hope to divorced Catholics – Divided clerics echoed the more inclusive tone of Pope Francis. Yet the still-significant opposition in the synod to rapid changes in rules also suggested how far off Catholics may yet be from seeing Francis’s revolutionary style turned into practice …
In a speech, Francis acknowledged the rifts among clerics, noting that differences of opinion were freely expressed and “at times, unfortunately, not in entirely well-meaning ways.”
The above reports blamed “the bishops” for opposing same-sex marriage.
Unfortunately, the pope’s “more merciful and less judgmental church,” “strong plea for inclusiveness” and “revolutionary style” only applies to divorced Catholics, remarried without obtaining an annulment from the church. (In his speech, the pope mentioned the “indissolubility” of marriage.) Although still not allowed to receive Communion,
If lay persons were asked what the Catholic Church can do to improve life for families, I’d be safe in saying the vast majority wouldn’t even mention the above situation while women and LGBT persons are still not considered equal and deserving of human rights.
One topic not covered by the synod:
The second prominent issue at the synod was whether some language should be changed so that the church appears more “welcoming” to gays. Currently, the Catechism states that homosexual acts are a “grave depravity” and “intrinsically disordered.” … “This inclination” (i.e. homosexualty) is “objectively disordered.” The final document by the synod said gay people should be treated with respect but that same-sex marriage was not “even remotely analogous” to marriage between a man and a woman. No doctrine will be changed. Therefore, the pope and his men will continue to persecute LGBT persons under the banner of “religious freedom” but will use nicer words doing it.
In addressing the synod, Cardinal Robert Sarah of Guinea, “a top official in the Roman Curia, blasted the ‘idolatry of Western freedom’ as equivalent to ‘Islamic fundamentalism’ and compared both to ‘apocalyptic beasts.’ He also said that divorce, abortion and same-sex marriage in the West, and Islamic fundamentalism in Africa and elsewhere, both had a ‘demonic origin’ that the synod had to combat.’ ‘What Nazi-fascism and communism were in the 20th century, Western homosexual and abortion ideologies and Islamic fanaticism are today,’ Sarah said.”
Catholic blogger William D. Lindsey, Ph.D., noted: “Certainly other moderate things were said at the synod about LGBT human beings. My point is that the Catholic Church is still – and this should shock its adherents, I’m also maintaining – the kind of institution in which top leaders feel perfectly free to make this kind of remarks.”
Meanwhile, the mainstream media omitted mentioning the following news of what occurred during the three weeks the synod was in session regarding sex abuse victims, LGBT persons and women.
Oct. 4: “Think – with your head – and do not be swayed by the unfounded allegations of lefties,” Pope Francis said in footage broadcast by the Chilean TV channel Mega. “Osorno is suffering from stupidity, and for not opening its heart to what God says. And for letting itself get carried away by the garbage everybody says,” he added. The pope was speaking about the installation earlier this year of Juan Barros as bishop of Osorno, Chile, “amid riot police” and “hundreds of shouting churchgoers dressed in the black of mourning who accuse him of covering up crimes of a mentor the Vatican has sanctioned for abusing young boys.”
Oct. 4: Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich, named as one of the pope’s “center-left” allies, defrocked one of his priests for having an “inappropriate relationship” with an adult man.
Oct. 12: “The French government has chosen not to name a new ambassador to the Holy See, after the Vatican declined to accept the nomination of Laurent Stefanini.” “Pope Francis informed the gay diplomat personally that he could not accept his appointment to the Vatican. The pope is said to have told Msr. Stefanini that France’s legalization of same-sex marriage in 2013 was part of the reason he could not allow him into the Vatican’s diplomatic community. Reuters translated this concern to mean the pope fears Ambassador Stefanini could decide to marry while serving at the Vatican.”
Oct. 12: “The Vatican closed a probe into sex abuse at a Spanish school run by Opus Dei … because the allegations have not been proven and as a result, the good name and reputation of the accused must be restored.” With the usual global press coverage, Pope Francis had responded in a handwritten letter to parents who had sent a letter to the pope “with documents they said backed their son’s accusations” that he had been sexually abused. “The cross is very hard. I ask Our Lord to help you carry it,” the pope wrote. “In addition, today I am sending the documentation to the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith so that the teacher can face canonical proceedings without the boy being disturbed,” he added in the letter dated December 29, 2014.
Oct. 16: An update on the current status of some of the priests named in the investigation, “South America has become a safe haven for the Catholic Church’s alleged child molesters … Catholic priests who have been accused of abusing children in the United States and Europe have avoided accountability simply by moving to a less-developed country.” None have been reported to the public or civil authorities by their superiors.
Oct. 16: Sydney Archbishop Anthony Fisher said that should the plebiscite on same-sex marriage be successful, “within a decade bishops could be imprisoned, political dissent silenced, scripture lessons banned, and tax exemptions for religious institutions discarded.” He said this in an address to the free market think-tank, the Centre for Independent Studies.
Oct. 19: American women are warned “If You Are Pregnant, Stay Away From Catholic Hospitals … Catholic hospitals are systematically denying pregnant women essential health care, even when their life is at stake. It’s unethical, illegal, and just plain wrong.”
Oct. 20: Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart “has slammed the State of Victoria’s Labour government over a scheduled reform that would allow same-sex couples access to adoption services, calling it a “fundamental attack on religious freedom” and a violation of fundamental human rights.
Oct. 21: “A Polish bishop defrocked a high-ranking Catholic priest fired by a furious Vatican earlier this month after he came out as gay on the eve of a key synod on the family.”
Oct. 22: “Attorneys representing child abuse victims of the Roman Catholic Church and the Los Angeles Unified School District reacted with outrage to an attempt by Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez to reduce the protections given to minor victims of sexual predators in California. The petition by Archbishop Gomez with the California Supreme Court asking them to ‘de-publish’ a recent California Court of Appeals of decision contradicts recent promises by Pope Francis to hold bishops accountable for failing to protect children from sexual abuse … ‘This blatant attempt to shield the Catholic Church and other institutions from accountability in abuse cases is unconscionable,’ said child sex abuse victim’s attorney Vince Finaldi.’”
Every US reporter and journalist writing about the Catholic Church knows that Pope John Paul II aligned with the neocon plutocracy and appointed hierarchs accordingly. Yet we have been told unanimously by the mainstream media that this wasn’t true when Pope John Paul II appointed Jorge Mario Bergoglio as bishop and promoted him to cardinal. Furthermore, we were told that this resulted in a huge rift between the pope and the US episcopate.
Pope Francis proved Religious Right issues really matter to him during his trip to the US. He met with the Little Sisters of the Poor, a group of nuns who filed suit against Obamacare and, in private, with Kim Davis, the county employee jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses as required by law to same-sex couples. Confirming the reason for his meeting with Davis, on the flight back to Rome Pope Francis specifically stated after their meeting that “conscientious objection” by “government employees” is a “human right.” (No, the pope doesn’t meet with everyone. He has never met in private with an American Democrat other than Pres. Obama.)
Additionally, the pope praised his US bishops for their “courage” and “great sacrifice” in handling the sex abuse crisis, another sign of unity.
“The US Conference of Catholic bishops has long stressed that the horrors of child sex abuse are not exclusive to the church and that other sources in civil society and in the family share blame.” So included in a meeting with the pope were victims of sexual abuse by relatives and educators, “a subtle but unmistakable effort by the Vatican to shift the terms of the debate, to show ‘that it’s not always the church’s fault,’ as Marci A. Hamilton, a law professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University who has represented hundreds of victims of clerical sexual abuse, put it.”
None in the media dared suggest there was any manipulation when the meeting with victims of sex abuse was arranged for the pope’s last day in this country so that that would be the final headline as he boarded the plane for his return to Rome.

Yesterday, the Spanish journal Religión Digital published an interview with the gay Polish priest who came out of the closet in a public way prior to the synod on the family — Monsignor Krzysztof Charamsa. Those following this story will know that Msgr. Charamsa was quickly defrocked by his bishop (in sharp contrast to the many priests who have abused minors and have been permitted to remain in ministry, have been moved about from parish to parish and hidden from public scrutiny).
The interview with Msgr. Charamsa in Religión Digital is a conversation between him and journalist José M. Vidal. To the best of my knowledge, this article has not yet been translated into English. I'm very grateful to my friend Brittmarie (Brittie) Janson Perez for sending me and others on her email list a quick translation of the article. As she notes, tools like Google Translate allow non-Spanish readers to have a fairly good, if somewhat rough, idea of what the article is saying.
If I spot an English translation or any Spanish-speaking reader of this blog wants to provide one (and Brittie herself may well have more commentary down the road), I may have further commentary on this interview. For now, here are highlights that leap out at me (whose Spanish is rudimentary, though I can make out quite a bit):

Yes, he says, the Catholic church persecutes sexual minorities, the LGBTI community, in particular. It does so as an expression of the percecution of sexual minorities who do not and cannot fit into the heterosexual majority. This is treated as an ideological project by the church — something akin to the ideological battle against Nazism. LGBTI people are compared by church officials with the Nazis; they're tagged as enemies of humanity. Cardinal Sarah made such an equation during the synod. The church is obsessed with homosexuality, as it is with human sexuality in general.

A tale of two cities, London and Vatican City: two different approaches to investigating official cover-ups of child sexual abuse — the UK’s is serious; the Vatican’s is window dressing so far. The latest tale takes place over just a few days, yet shows the essential contrast between the UK’s parliamentary democracy and the Vatican’s absolute monarchy. London’s investigative approach is clearly designed to be expeditious, independent and transparent; the Vatican’s approach is clearly designed to be unending, controlled and secretive. London’s sex abuse commission is seeking to find out who did what when; the Vatican’s sex abuse commission is designed to find “best practices”, including some education and training programs. If the pope is serious, he needs to add to his commission some experienced, independent and proven members, like Fr. Thomas Doyle, Illinois Justice Anne Burke and former Irish President, Mary McAleese? Is Francis trying to avoid the truth? It seems he is.
It has been a tough week for Pope Francis with: (1) the UK investigation announcement, (2) the much and justifiably ridiculed all male “Pontifical Council on Women” with its launch in a night club atmosphere at Teatro Argentina in Rome, and (3) the release of Jesuit educated and former Wall Street lawyer, Gerald Posner’s explosive book, “God’s Bankers: A History of Money and Power at the Vatican” , (see at Amazon link [Amazon]). [The synod] was about urging everyone to appreciate the importance of the institution of the family and of marriage between a man and a woman, based on unity and indissolubility, and valuing it as the fundamental basis of society and human life. …[Pope Francis has called the movement in many countries to accept same-sex marriage as “ideological colonization that we have to be careful about that is trying to destroy the family.” In his recent speech to the UN, the pope “reminded the UN of their duty to recognize ethical limits, … ‘for carrying out an ideological colonization by the imposition of anomalous models and lifestyles which are alien to people’s identity and, in the end, irresponsible.’”]
We have seen, also by the richness of our diversity, that the same challenge is ever before us: that of proclaiming the Gospel to the men and women of today, and defending the family from all ideological and individualistic assaults.
The above quote from yesterday’s speech was omitted by the New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press, Reuters and Religion News Service. As has been true for this pontificate, only the good stuff gets reported.
Reuters: “Pope Francis Ends Synod By Excoriating Bishops With ‘Closed Hearts’ And ‘Heads In The Sand’ – In his final address, the pope appeared to criticize ultra-conservatives, saying Church leaders should confront difficult issues ‘fearlessly, without burying our heads in the sand.’ He said the synod had ‘laid bare the closed hearts which frequently hide even behind the Church’s teachings or good intentions, in order to sit in the chair of Moses and judge, sometimes with superiority and superficiality, difficult cases and wounded families.’”
AP: “Pope Francis takes swipe at conservative bishops as synod on families ends – Catholic bishops … endorsed Pope Francis’ call for a more merciful and less judgmental church.” The last sentence above was repeated.
NYTimes: “Amid Splits, Catholic Bishops Crack Open Door on Divorce – [and] appeared to give Pope Francis enough support to advance his vision of a more merciful church … Francis made a strong plea for inclusiveness in his final address to the assembly, known as a synod, which brought together about 270 bishops from around the world.” Again, the last sentence above was repeated.
RNS: “Tense Vatican summit ends by opening door for divorced, punting on welcome to gays – Francis himself seemed to signal his intentions as he delivered a powerful closing talk to the gathering on Saturday evening that denounced moral legalism in the church and declared that ‘the true defenders of doctrine are not those who uphold its letter, but its spirit.’” Again, the last sentence above was repeated.
WaPo: “Vatican synod on families offers hope to divorced Catholics – Divided clerics echoed the more inclusive tone of Pope Francis. Yet the still-significant opposition in the synod to rapid changes in rules also suggested how far off Catholics may yet be from seeing Francis’s revolutionary style turned into practice …
In a speech, Francis acknowledged the rifts among clerics, noting that differences of opinion were freely expressed and “at times, unfortunately, not in entirely well-meaning ways.”
The above reports blamed “the bishops” for opposing same-sex marriage.
Unfortunately, the pope’s “more merciful and less judgmental church,” “strong plea for inclusiveness” and “revolutionary style” only applies to divorced Catholics, remarried without obtaining an annulment from the church. (In his speech, the pope mentioned the “indissolubility” of marriage.) Although still not allowed to receive Communion,
The document passed by the synod includes language about Catholics consulting with their pastors so that they can be more fully integrated into church life. Currently, Catholics who are divorced and remarried without an annulment are viewed as being in an adulterous relationship and thus cannot receive Communion – or serve in many church roles – unless they live chastely as brother and sister.
That bar is seen as unrealistic for the vast majority of divorced and remarried Catholics who often leave the church, refrain from taking Communion or make peace with it in their own minds and receive.
If lay persons were asked what the Catholic Church can do to improve life for families, I’d be safe in saying the vast majority wouldn’t even mention the above situation while women and LGBT persons are still not considered equal and deserving of human rights.
One topic not covered by the synod:
If every woman who wanted birth control had access to it, each year, there would be:The families of the church’s hundreds of thousands of sexual abuse victims were given no consideration, either.

The second prominent issue at the synod was whether some language should be changed so that the church appears more “welcoming” to gays. Currently, the Catechism states that homosexual acts are a “grave depravity” and “intrinsically disordered.” … “This inclination” (i.e. homosexualty) is “objectively disordered.” The final document by the synod said gay people should be treated with respect but that same-sex marriage was not “even remotely analogous” to marriage between a man and a woman. No doctrine will be changed. Therefore, the pope and his men will continue to persecute LGBT persons under the banner of “religious freedom” but will use nicer words doing it.
In addressing the synod, Cardinal Robert Sarah of Guinea, “a top official in the Roman Curia, blasted the ‘idolatry of Western freedom’ as equivalent to ‘Islamic fundamentalism’ and compared both to ‘apocalyptic beasts.’ He also said that divorce, abortion and same-sex marriage in the West, and Islamic fundamentalism in Africa and elsewhere, both had a ‘demonic origin’ that the synod had to combat.’ ‘What Nazi-fascism and communism were in the 20th century, Western homosexual and abortion ideologies and Islamic fanaticism are today,’ Sarah said.”
Catholic blogger William D. Lindsey, Ph.D., noted: “Certainly other moderate things were said at the synod about LGBT human beings. My point is that the Catholic Church is still – and this should shock its adherents, I’m also maintaining – the kind of institution in which top leaders feel perfectly free to make this kind of remarks.”
Meanwhile, the mainstream media omitted mentioning the following news of what occurred during the three weeks the synod was in session regarding sex abuse victims, LGBT persons and women.
Oct. 4: “Think – with your head – and do not be swayed by the unfounded allegations of lefties,” Pope Francis said in footage broadcast by the Chilean TV channel Mega. “Osorno is suffering from stupidity, and for not opening its heart to what God says. And for letting itself get carried away by the garbage everybody says,” he added. The pope was speaking about the installation earlier this year of Juan Barros as bishop of Osorno, Chile, “amid riot police” and “hundreds of shouting churchgoers dressed in the black of mourning who accuse him of covering up crimes of a mentor the Vatican has sanctioned for abusing young boys.”
Oct. 4: Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich, named as one of the pope’s “center-left” allies, defrocked one of his priests for having an “inappropriate relationship” with an adult man.
Oct. 12: “The French government has chosen not to name a new ambassador to the Holy See, after the Vatican declined to accept the nomination of Laurent Stefanini.” “Pope Francis informed the gay diplomat personally that he could not accept his appointment to the Vatican. The pope is said to have told Msr. Stefanini that France’s legalization of same-sex marriage in 2013 was part of the reason he could not allow him into the Vatican’s diplomatic community. Reuters translated this concern to mean the pope fears Ambassador Stefanini could decide to marry while serving at the Vatican.”
Oct. 12: “The Vatican closed a probe into sex abuse at a Spanish school run by Opus Dei … because the allegations have not been proven and as a result, the good name and reputation of the accused must be restored.” With the usual global press coverage, Pope Francis had responded in a handwritten letter to parents who had sent a letter to the pope “with documents they said backed their son’s accusations” that he had been sexually abused. “The cross is very hard. I ask Our Lord to help you carry it,” the pope wrote. “In addition, today I am sending the documentation to the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith so that the teacher can face canonical proceedings without the boy being disturbed,” he added in the letter dated December 29, 2014.
Oct. 16: An update on the current status of some of the priests named in the investigation, “South America has become a safe haven for the Catholic Church’s alleged child molesters … Catholic priests who have been accused of abusing children in the United States and Europe have avoided accountability simply by moving to a less-developed country.” None have been reported to the public or civil authorities by their superiors.
Oct. 16: Sydney Archbishop Anthony Fisher said that should the plebiscite on same-sex marriage be successful, “within a decade bishops could be imprisoned, political dissent silenced, scripture lessons banned, and tax exemptions for religious institutions discarded.” He said this in an address to the free market think-tank, the Centre for Independent Studies.
Oct. 19: American women are warned “If You Are Pregnant, Stay Away From Catholic Hospitals … Catholic hospitals are systematically denying pregnant women essential health care, even when their life is at stake. It’s unethical, illegal, and just plain wrong.”
Oct. 20: Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart “has slammed the State of Victoria’s Labour government over a scheduled reform that would allow same-sex couples access to adoption services, calling it a “fundamental attack on religious freedom” and a violation of fundamental human rights.
Oct. 21: “A Polish bishop defrocked a high-ranking Catholic priest fired by a furious Vatican earlier this month after he came out as gay on the eve of a key synod on the family.”
Oct. 22: “Attorneys representing child abuse victims of the Roman Catholic Church and the Los Angeles Unified School District reacted with outrage to an attempt by Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez to reduce the protections given to minor victims of sexual predators in California. The petition by Archbishop Gomez with the California Supreme Court asking them to ‘de-publish’ a recent California Court of Appeals of decision contradicts recent promises by Pope Francis to hold bishops accountable for failing to protect children from sexual abuse … ‘This blatant attempt to shield the Catholic Church and other institutions from accountability in abuse cases is unconscionable,’ said child sex abuse victim’s attorney Vince Finaldi.’”
Every US reporter and journalist writing about the Catholic Church knows that Pope John Paul II aligned with the neocon plutocracy and appointed hierarchs accordingly. Yet we have been told unanimously by the mainstream media that this wasn’t true when Pope John Paul II appointed Jorge Mario Bergoglio as bishop and promoted him to cardinal. Furthermore, we were told that this resulted in a huge rift between the pope and the US episcopate.
Pope Francis proved Religious Right issues really matter to him during his trip to the US. He met with the Little Sisters of the Poor, a group of nuns who filed suit against Obamacare and, in private, with Kim Davis, the county employee jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses as required by law to same-sex couples. Confirming the reason for his meeting with Davis, on the flight back to Rome Pope Francis specifically stated after their meeting that “conscientious objection” by “government employees” is a “human right.” (No, the pope doesn’t meet with everyone. He has never met in private with an American Democrat other than Pres. Obama.)
Additionally, the pope praised his US bishops for their “courage” and “great sacrifice” in handling the sex abuse crisis, another sign of unity.
“The US Conference of Catholic bishops has long stressed that the horrors of child sex abuse are not exclusive to the church and that other sources in civil society and in the family share blame.” So included in a meeting with the pope were victims of sexual abuse by relatives and educators, “a subtle but unmistakable effort by the Vatican to shift the terms of the debate, to show ‘that it’s not always the church’s fault,’ as Marci A. Hamilton, a law professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University who has represented hundreds of victims of clerical sexual abuse, put it.”
None in the media dared suggest there was any manipulation when the meeting with victims of sex abuse was arranged for the pope’s last day in this country so that that would be the final headline as he boarded the plane for his return to Rome.

Yesterday, the Spanish journal Religión Digital published an interview with the gay Polish priest who came out of the closet in a public way prior to the synod on the family — Monsignor Krzysztof Charamsa. Those following this story will know that Msgr. Charamsa was quickly defrocked by his bishop (in sharp contrast to the many priests who have abused minors and have been permitted to remain in ministry, have been moved about from parish to parish and hidden from public scrutiny).
The interview with Msgr. Charamsa in Religión Digital is a conversation between him and journalist José M. Vidal. To the best of my knowledge, this article has not yet been translated into English. I'm very grateful to my friend Brittmarie (Brittie) Janson Perez for sending me and others on her email list a quick translation of the article. As she notes, tools like Google Translate allow non-Spanish readers to have a fairly good, if somewhat rough, idea of what the article is saying.
If I spot an English translation or any Spanish-speaking reader of this blog wants to provide one (and Brittie herself may well have more commentary down the road), I may have further commentary on this interview. For now, here are highlights that leap out at me (whose Spanish is rudimentary, though I can make out quite a bit):
Vidal asks Msgr. Charamsa, "The church preaches mercy, but does it not keep on persecuting homosexuals?" (La Iglesia predica misericordia, pero ¿sigue persiguiendo a los homosexuales?). Charamsa replies:
Sí, hay una verdadera persecución por parte de la iglesia católica tanto de las personas como de la comunidad LGBTI en general. Yes, he says, the Catholic church persecutes sexual minorities, the LGBTI community, in particular. It does so as an expression of the percecution of sexual minorities who do not and cannot fit into the heterosexual majority. This is treated as an ideological project by the church — something akin to the ideological battle against Nazism. LGBTI people are compared by church officials with the Nazis; they're tagged as enemies of humanity. Cardinal Sarah made such an equation during the synod. The church is obsessed with homosexuality, as it is with human sexuality in general.

That funeral started with a sung Mass celebrated by the closest collaboraors of the pope and ended 10 days later in Poland with the reading of a letter in which it was said that the acusations of pedophilia were only inventions of the Dominican Republic mafia. The Vatican allowed this spectacle instead of thinking of how to immediately indemnify the victims of this pederast bishop.
Seeing all this, one can reach the conclusion that there is a pedophile lobby in the Vatican. Yes, many pederast priests and bishops get special treatment and many go scot free. In the light of this Vatican reaction to a gay priest who tells the truth is a shameful automatic reaction. But that is the logic of the Church: everything must be hidden "for the good of the Church." While it is covered up, nothing happens. After Joseph Ratzinger publicly announced his plans to retire, quite a few people who are aware of this website or the @Fire_the_PopeTwitter
account remarked how I got my wish or, jokingly, how my website may
have led to the first resignation of a pope in 600 years.
Yes,
I’ve had Ratzinger’s picture prominently displayed on this site and,
given his long record both as the pope and as the one person responsible
for handling all sex-crime cases in the Church, I strongly believed him
to be incompetent at best.
However,
FireThePope doesn’t just mean fire Joseph Ratzinger. FireThePope isn’t a
cause to bring down one man. FireThePope is an effort to expose the
entire Roman Catholic Church, as is, as fraudulent and there is no
better way to do that than to start at the top.
Not your Father’s church.
The
Roman Catholic Church sets itself apart from all other religions,
including Christian denominations, by claiming its head, the pope, is
the successor of Peter and that Jesus anointed Peter to be the head of
his church. The Church points to Matthew 16:13-20 to support this claim.
Catholics conclude the Roman Catholic Church is the “one true church”
of Jesus Christ and all other Protestant or non-Roman orthodox churches
are inferior to it.
Roman
Catholics call their church “the bride of Christ” and “Holy Mother
Church”. These nicknames market the idea that Roman Catholicism dates
back to the days of Jesus Christ and it – or “She”, as they say – is the
very foundation of Christianity and all other religions are mere
offshoots or sequels to Roman Catholicism.
Ultimately,
Roman Catholicism rests solely on the supremacy of Peter and the
apostles. Without the supremacy of Peter, there would be no pope.
Without the supremacy of the apostles, there would be no priesthood as
the Roman Church defines it. Without the superhuman powers of Catholic
priests, bye-bye sacraments, indulgences, and the entire institution.
Today,
let’s focus on the papacy. Following are ten reasons why there should
never be another pope and, if there is, he should be completely ignored
by the Catholic laity, the media, politicians, and the public at large.
Because
the Vatican bases its very existence on a scene from the New Testament,
it must also accept other verses of the NT in order to be consistent.
Either the NT should be accepted as true, non-fictional accounts or not.
Either those accounts must be taken literally or not. But, one cannot
say this is a source of truth, inspired by the Holy Spirit and then pick
and choose which passages the Church wants to follow or not.
1. The
church of Jesus Christ in the bible was not a physical empire. Matthew
24:1-2 - ”Jesus left the temple precincts then, and his disciples came
up and pointed out to him the buildings of the temple area. His comment
was: ‘Do you see all these buildings? I assure you, not one stone will
be left on another – it will all be torn down.’” 1 Corinthians 3:16 –
“Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the spirit of
God dwells in you?” Also, Peter 2:5-9 – “Be yourselves as living stones
built into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual
sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Jesus preached in
homes and on hillsides, not in buildings. He only went in to temples to
draw people out of them or to scold the church leaders. The word catholic, found in the bible with a lower-case c, means universal. In the first century, the wordchurch (also lower-case c) meant a society of men, women, and children who are spiritually – not necessarily physically – united to serve God. According to the NT, Jesus established the catholic church – a universal society of believers who would offer spiritualsacrifices. I explain below who really instituted the Roman Catholic Church, which requires material (pagan) sacrifices.
2. The
church of Jesus Christ was not built upon one man. The idea that the
church of Jesus was built upon one man is preposterous. Yet, that is
what the Roman Church claims. Its only foundation is the notion that
Peter was chosen by Jesus to be the first pope and that all popes are
Peter’s successors, chosen by the Holy Spirit and infallible in all of
their declarations. Roman Catholicism teaches that the pope, acting on
behalf of the Church (notice the capital C indicating the Corporation)
has the power and a duty to act as a mediator between the Creator and
his creatures. It has been a long-held tradition that the Vatican, the
Magisterium, and the clergy would interpret the bible for the laity.
However, 1 Corinthians 3:11 reads, “For other foundation no one can lay,
but that which has been laid, which is Jesus Christ”. According to
scripture, Jesus, not Peter, is the foundation of the Christian church.
Jesus is also the sole mediator, so says 1 Timothy 2:5: ”And the truth
is this: ‘God is one. One also is the mediator between God and men, the
man Christ Jesus, and who gave himself ransom for all.” According to the
New Testament where Catholics turn to justify the existence of their
Church, there is only one mediator between God and the people and that
is Jesus Christ, not Peter and not Joseph Ratzinger.
3. The
church of Jesus Christ in the bible did not have a pope.The word pope
is not in the bible, where the Roman Church points to as justification
for itself. The early church described in the New Testament speaks of
bishops who were overseers or local supervisors of the effort to
spread Christianity. They were not rulers over the people. No one bishop
had authority over any other. No one bishop was the head of the effort.
There was a bishop in many major cities, including one in Rome. It so
happened that certain Roman emperors (namely Constantine and
Charlemagne) elevated the position and authority of the bishop of Rome,
specifically, because they had the power to do so and because it was
convenient as Rome was the seat of power. Emperors appointed bishops and
abbots and usually appointed members of aristocratic families. The idea
of a pope – one bishop over all others – was a corrupt power grab by
murderous dictators and had nothing to do with Jesus Christ or anything
in the bible.
4. The
Peter of the throne was not the apostle but an impostor. Remember, the
apostle Peter originally went by the name of Simon. Then, he was
referred to as Simon Peter. Jesus named him Peter at the rock because
the name Peter – or Petros (Greek) means rock. This Peter
was from Cyprus, according to the bible. But, there is another Simon in
the bible, this one from Samaria and he was a troublemaker. Locals
called him Simon the
Swiss Guard Army elite - who go on to manage secret Vatican Swiss Banks in Switzerland and worldwide

the days of the early church, it was not Peter the Apostle but Simon the
Magician. Simon sat on a throne; Peter never did. Simon claimed to be
God; Peter never did. Simon claimed to have supernatural powers; Peter
never did. Simon Magnus even started going by the name Peter in order to
confuse people. They both had the same name, they both died in the same
year – 67 A.D., and they both had spent time in Rome. The proof that
the Simon of Samaria, not Cyprus, sat on the throne in Rome is the
documentation that Magnus stayed in Rome for many years at a time while
the apostle came and went quite often.
5. The
apostle Peter never considered himself God or Jesus Christ. Again, the
idea of the papacy rests on the supremacy of Peter. The Roman Church
claims the pope is “Christ’s (sole) representative on earth”. The Peter
whom the popes are supposed to have succeeded was married with at least
one child – a daughter. He never sat on a throne and he never claimed to
have magic powers or to be infallible. He never claimed to be better or
more important than the other apostles or early leaders of the
Christian church. He never dressed in fancy clothes, he never wore a

to the rescue of Christians who were being persecuted by Emperor
Diocletian. It’s not that he was overcome by compassion but realized he
could take political advantage from the growing number of Christians.

7. The
papacy was on life support as recently as 1870. In the mid-19th
Century, there was an effort to unify Italy which was split in two by
the Papal States governed by the pope, then Pope Pius IX (the one who
dreamed up Immaculate Conception).
Victor Emmanuel II, the new King of Italy, had seized all of the
Church-controlled territory except a small segment of Rome. Napoleon,
who had previously been an ally of Emmanuel, protected the pope and by
having some of his troops stand guard at the Vatican. When the
Franco-Prussia War intensified, Napoleon pulled his troops out of Rome,
leaving the pope defenseless. The Italian troops moved in and the pope
lost all of his temporal (civil) power minus rule over the tiny
territory of the Vatican. Emmanuel allowed the pope to keep the Vatican
and freed him from Italian rule but the pope was defiant. Pius IX
refused to recognize Emmanuel’s new kingdom and he voluntarily kept
himself a prisoner of the Vatican. He cried anti-Catholic bias until
support and donations poured in for him, including from Catholics in
America. The empire of the Roman Church was all but lost in 1870. It
took more deception to keep it alive.
8. The
papacy was corruptly propped back up by a fascist dictator. In the
1920′s, the Italian government wished to settle its differences with the
Church. At the time, the Prime Minister of Italy was Benito Mussolini.

He
conspired with the Vatican to shut out populist factions in the country
in order to amass more power and control for himself. The Vatican
silenced priests who favored a more democratic government. In return,
Mussolini gifted the Church by officially recognizing the Vatican as an
independent and sovereign city-state. Within the borders of Italy, popes
would receive diplomatic immunity and the Church would receive
financial reparations for its loss of the Papal States. Also, Roman
Catholicism would be the one state religion in Italy. These agreements
were called the Lateran Pacts and they are what revived the
much weakened papacy. Mussolini would go on to become one of history’s
most brutal dictators. Today, Vatican City, the whole 0.2 square miles
of it, is recognized by the United Nations as a sovereign city-state of
which the pope is head.
9. The
pope is an absolute monarch at a time when most educated and reasonable
human beings believe in freedom, democracy, and accountability. In
2011, the world witnessed what is now referred to as The Arab Spring.
Ordinary people protested – many to their deaths – for freedom, respect,
and democratic elections. Many citizens of some nations in the Middle
East had been oppressed for generations and they finally decided it was
time to take a stand against tyranny. It has been said there is a
natural hunger to live freely, no matter what part of the world one
lives. The pope is an absolute monarch, only one of a few that still
exist and certainly the most powerful. As such, and because he enjoys
diplomatic immunity both in Italy and out, he is accountable to no one.
The pope is elected but not by the people he represents as in a
democracy. He is elected by the same men whom he appointed to the
College of Cardinals. Once a pope takes office, he is unaccountable to
anyone inside the Church or out. This type of power is contrary to what
the New Testament described when Jesus turned tables on the clergy. The
pope, like Simon Magnus, claims to be God. Only someone with a
God-complex would claim to be above the law and every other human being.

papacy is not inspired by the Holy Spirit. If anything, it would be

entered into the Church before the age of reason? Catholics are quick to
remind us of “all the good the Church does”. There isn’t a tyrant in
history that couldn’t claim the same. Evil almost always presents itself
in disguise – as something good. When deception is the foundation of an
institution, no amount of superficial acts that come out of it can make
it good. Deeds and institutions can only be good if they are based in
truth. Like it or not, the spirit that is guiding the Roman Catholic
Church isn’t holy, it is evil. And the only way to kill a serpent is by

The
decade-long American wars in Afghanistan and Iraq would end up costing
as much as $6 trillion, the equivalent of $75,000 for every American
household, calculates the prestigious Harvard University’s Kennedy
School of Government.
Remember,
when President George Bush’s National Economic Council Director,
Lawrence Lindsey, had told the country’s largest newspaper “The Wall
Street Journal” that the war would cost between $100 billion and $200
billion, he had found himself under intense fire from his colleagues in
the administration who claimed that this was a gross overestimation.
Consequently,
Lawrence Lindsey was forced to resign. It is also imperative to recall
that the Bush administration had claimed at the very outset that the
Iraq war would finance itself out of Iraqi oil revenues, but Washington
DC had instead ended up borrowing some $2 trillion to finance the two
wars, the bulk of it from foreign lenders.
According
to the Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government 2013 report,
this accounted for roughly 20 per cent of the total amount added to the
US national debt between 2001 and 2012.
According
to the report, the US “has already paid $260 billion in interest on the
war debt,” and future interest payments would amount to trillions of
dollars. This Harvard University report has also been carried on its
website by the Centre for Research on Globalisation, which is a widely-quoted Montreal-based independent research and media organisation.
In
its report under review, the 377-year old Harvard University has viewed
that these afore-mentioned wars had not only left the United States
heavily indebted, but would also have a profound impact on the federal
government’s fiscal and budgetary crises over a protracted period.
The
report has attributed the largest share of the trillions of dollars in
continuing costs to care and compensation for hundreds of thousands of
troops left physically and psychologically damaged by the two wars being
discussed here.
The
report states: “The Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, taken together,
will be the most expensive wars in US history—totaling somewhere between
$4 trillion and $6 trillion. This includes long-term medical care and
disability compensation for service members, veterans and families,
military replenishment and social and economic costs. The largest
portion of that bill is yet to be paid.”
It
asserts: “Another major share of the long-term costs of the wars comes
from paying off trillions of dollars in debt incurred as the US
government failed to include their cost in annual budgets and
simultaneously implemented sweeping tax cuts for the rich. In addition,
huge expenditures are being made to replace military equipment used in
the two wars. The report also cites improvements in military pay and
benefits made in 2004 to counter declining recruitment rates as
casualties rose in the Iraq war.”
The
authors of this report have warned that the legacy of decisions taken
during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars would dominate future federal
budgets for decades to come.
According
to the Harvard University report, some 1.56 million US troops—56 per
cent of all Afghanistan and Iraq veterans—were receiving medical
treatment at Veterans Administration facilities and would be granted
benefits for the rest of their lives.
It reveals:
“One
out of every two veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan has already applied
for permanent disability benefits. The official figure of 50,000
American troops “wounded in action” vastly underestimates the real human
costs of the two US wars. One-third of returning veterans are being
diagnosed with mental health issues—suffering from anxiety, depression,
and/or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).”
The
report notes that in addition, over a quarter of a million troops have
suffered traumatic brain injuries (TBI), which, in many cases, were
combined with PTSD, posing greater problems in treatment and recovery.
“Constituting
a particularly grim facet of this mental health crisis is the doubling
of the suicide rate for US Army personnel, with many who attempted
suicide suffering serious injuries,” opine the report authors.
It maintains:
“Overall,
the Veterans Administration’s budget has more than doubled over the
past decade, from $61.4 billion in 2001 to $140.3 billion in 2013. As a
share of the total US budget it has grown from 2.5 percent to 3.5
percent over the same period. Soaring medical costs for veterans is
attributable to several factors. Among them is that, thanks to
advancements in medical technology and rapid treatment, soldiers in Iraq
and Afghanistan have survived wounds that would have cost their lives
in earlier conflicts.”
The
Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government report has estimated:
“While the US government has already spent $134 billion on medical care
and disability benefits for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, this figure
will climb by an additional $836 billion over the coming decades.”
It
notes that the largest expenditures on health care for World War II
veterans took place in the 1980s, roughly four decades after the war,
and that spending on medical care and disability payments for Vietnam
War veterans was still on the rise.
Here follows the description:
“The
most common medical problems suffered by troops returning from the two
wars include: diseases of the musculoskeletal system (principally joint
and back disorders); mental health disorders; central nervous system and
endocrine system disorders; as well as respiratory, digestive, skin and
hearing disorders. Overall, some 29 per cent of these troops have been
diagnosed with PTSD.”
The report goes on to argue:
“Among
the most severely wounded are 6,476 soldiers and Marines who have
suffered “severe penetrating brain injury,” and another 1,715 who have
had one or more limbs amputated. Over 30,000 veterans are listed as
suffering 100 percent service-related disabilities, while another
145,000 are listed as 70 to 90 percent disabled.”
It reads:
“The
worst of these casualties have taken place under the Obama
administration as a result of the so-called surge that the Democratic
president ordered in Afghanistan.”
It
mentions that the Walter Reed Medical Centre, US Army’s flagship
hospital at Washington DC, was treating hundreds of recent amputees and
severe casualties, adding that this facility had received 100 amputees
for treatment during 2010; 170 amputees in 2011; and 107 amputees in
2012.
The report has also stated that the US Marines have suffered an especially high toll.
The report points out:
“Massive
direct spending on the two imperialist interventions continues. With
over 60,000 US troops remain in Afghanistan, it is estimated that the
cost of deploying one American soldier for one year in this war amounts
to $1 million. These troops continue suffering casualties—including in
so-called “green on blue” attacks by Afghan security forces on their
ostensible allies. As they are brought home, they will further drive up
the costs of medical care and disability compensation. The US is
maintaining a vast diplomatic presence in Iraq, including at least
10,000 private contractors providing support in security, IT, logistics,
engineering and other occupations; as well as logistics support and
payments for leased facilities in Kuwait.”
In
its conclusion, the report not only seeks to dispel illusions that
ending full-scale wars in Iraq and Afghanistan would produce any kind of
“peace dividend” that could help ameliorate conditions of poverty,
unemployment and declining living standards for working people in the US
itself, but makes it clear that the legacy of decisions made during the
Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts would impose significant long-term costs
on the federal government for many years to come.

He argued it would help "boost" the fledgling free market.Later, American spending topped $12 billion a month and private contracting companies grew exponentially, arguably while doing shoddy work both in combat and in services and construction.The prevailing claim is that use of private contractors saved on military salary and benefits — a claim which casts the half a billion in benefits owed to Iraq War veterans in a more defining light.Some of the war's critics had argued the war said it was about freeing up Saddam's oil, which had been nationalized under the Ba'ath Party. Prominent
academic and author Dr Michel Chossudovsky warned that the so-called
war on terrorism is a front to propagate America’s global hegemony and
create a New World Order.
Dr Chossudovsky said terrorism is made in the US and that terrorists are not the product of the Muslim world.

We, the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS), salute the heroic resistance of the Kurdish people and their army in Rojava, the YPG/YPJ – People’s Protection Units – against the criminal gangs of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) in Kobane, one of the self-governing cantons of West Kurdistan (Rojava) in Syria.
We call on all the more than 300 ILPS member-organizations in 38 countries around the globe to take initiative and express their solidarity and support to the Kurdish people's resistance in Kobane and the whole of Rojava, or join the demonstrations being organized by the Kurdish liberation movement in different parts of the world.
The ILPS condemns the super-terrorist US for creating the ISIS monster that
has rampaged through parts of Syria and Iraq, committing hideous crimes
against the people in areas that they have overrun. We condemn Turkey for collaborating with the US in creating, arming and coddling this horde of terrorists.
ISIS and
similar extremist Islamist terrorist groups like the Al Qaeda and
Al-Nustra have been created by the US as part of its over-all scheme to
remake the Middle-East, by carrying out regime change in such countries
as Libya and Syria that have dared to assert their national sovereignty
against imperialist plunder and war. For its part, the Turkish government is using ISIS to attack the Kurdish liberation struggle led by the PKK.
ISIS terrorists have been trained by US Special Forces in secret NATO bases inside Turkey and Jordan. For the last year and a half, the US has been developing what the world has now come to know as ISIS. Turkey
has allowed safe passage through its borders of jihadists from
different parts of the world to join ISIS, and has facilitated the
transport of wounded ISIS terrorists to be treated in hospitals in the
Turkish province of Urfa and other cities in Turkey.
The US is remaking the Middle-East in order to consolidate its hegemony in this oil-rich region. It is using the ISIS in the same manner as it has used Neo-Nazi gangs in the Ukraine to
stir up trouble and force regime change, toppling the duly-elected
president, and replacing him with a pro-Western president and a fascist
military junta as part of US-NATO strategy to encircle and pressure
Russia.
In the wake of the hideous crimes of the ISIS,
including the massacre of Shiites and Christians, and the beheading of
Western journalists, the US has pretended to adopt a policy of opposing ISIS and carrying out bombing raids against ISIS. In fact, the US is still thereby using the ISIS as the pretext to violate the national sovereignty of Syria.
The US war planes are actually bombing food granaries and buildings in Syria which are away from ISIS positions. They
are now in a position to attack the forces of the Syrian government.
Turkey has also exposed its real dirty agenda to attack the Kurdish
liberation struggle by bombing PKK forces in Oramar (Daglica) near the
border with Iraq, relieving ISIS from the successful counter-attacks of
the Kurdish fighters and allowing the ISIS to block humanitarian aid
from Iraqi Kurdistan.
The Kurdish resistance forces in
Kobane have said that they can defeat the ISIS without any need for
foreign intervention such as that falsely offered by the US and
Turkey. All they need from Iraqi Kurdistan are sufficient weapons and
ammunition against the tanks and vehicles mounted with big guns of the
ISIS terrorists.
The terrible crimes being perpetrated by the ISIS and the support given them by the US and Turkey have
aroused the anger of freedom-loving people throughout the world. At the
same time, the heroic resistance of the YPG/YPJ – the People’s
Protection Units – composed of Kurdish men and women, has inspired the
people of the world to rally in support of the Kurdish liberation
struggle.The
acknowledged leader of the Kurdish liberation struggle, Abdullah
Ocalan, has called on the entire Kurdish nation to mobilize in support
of the resistance in Kobane. Kurds throughout the world have responded by organizing demonstrations in many countries calling for international support.
We must show our solidarity to the Kurdish people in their hour of need and give them all-out support until victory.

A History of Guatemala’s Syphilis Experiment: How a U.S. Led Team Performed Human Experimentations in Central America
Dr.
Cyril Broderick, A Liberian scientist and a former professor of Plant
Pathology at the University of Liberia’s College of Agriculture and
Forestry says the West, particularly the U.S. is responsible for the
Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Dr. Broderick claims the following in an
exclusive article published in the Daily Observer based in Monrovia,
Liberia. He wrote the following:
The
US Department of Defense (DoD) is funding Ebola trials on humans,
trials which started just weeks before the Ebola outbreak in Guinea and
Sierra Leone. The reports continue and state that the DoD gave a
contract worth $140 million dollars to Tekmira, a Canadian
pharmaceutical company, to conduct Ebola research. This research work
involved injecting and infusing healthy humans with the deadly Ebola
virus. Hence, the DoD is listed as a collaborator in a “First in Human”
Ebola clinical trial (NCT02041715, which started in January 2014 shortly
before an Ebola epidemic was declared in West Africa in March.
Is
it possible that the United States Department of Defense (DOD) and
other Western countries are directly responsible for infecting Africans
with the Ebola virus? Dr. Broderick claims that the U.S. government has a
research laboratory located in a town called Kenema in Sierra Leone
that studies what he calls “viral fever bioterrorism”, It is also the town where he acknowledges that is the “epicentre of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.” Is it a fact? Is Dr. Broderick a conspiracy theorist? He says that “there
is urgent need for affirmative action in protecting the less affluent
of poorer countries, especially African citizens, whose countries are
not as scientifically and industrially endowed as the United States and
most Western countries, sources of most viral or bacterial GMOs that are
strategically designed as biological weapons.” He also asks an important question when he says “It
is most disturbing that the U. S. Government has been operating a viral
hemorrhagic fever bioterrorism research laboratory in Sierra Leone. Are
there others?”
Well,
Mr. Broderick’s claims seem to be true. After all, the U.S. government
has been experimenting with deadly diseases on human beings for a long
time, history tells us so. One example is Guatemala. Between 1946 and
1948, the United States government under President Harry S. Truman in
collaboration with Guatemalan President Juan José Arévalo and his health
officials deliberately infected more than 1500 soldiers, prostitutes,
prisoners and even mental patients with syphilis and other sexually
transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chancroid (a bacterial sexual
infection) out of more than 5500 Guatemalan people who participated in
the experiments. The worst part of it is that none of the test subjects
infected with the diseases ever gave informed consent. The Boston Globe
published the discovery made by Medical historian and professor at
Wellesley College, Susan M. Reverby in 2010 called ‘Wellesley professor unearths a horror: Syphilis experiments in Guatemala.’ It stated how she came across her discovery:
