Pope Francis the Jesuit Master of Deceits has
announced, "Now in September, God willing, I will
canonize Junipero Serra in the United States. He was the evangelizer of the
West in the United States." First
of all, it is not “God willing” but the “Devil
willing” aka “Vatican Mammon Beast willing” aka “Opus Dei Beast PR Deceits Team
willing” aka “Jesuits Masters of Deceits willing”. Pope
Francis does not do the Will of God but rather the Will of the Opus Dei Beast
(led by American Greg Burke formerly of Fox).
The Opus Dei Beast controlled the 27 years papacy of John Paul II and
made him the most cold-hearted pope who for 27 years said nothing and did
nothing to save and protect children from thousands of Vatican recorded
pedophile priests – hence they are aptly called the JP2 Army – John Paul II

This
week, Pope Francis condoned corporal punishment for children. It isn’t a surprise that violent Pope Francis will canonize Junipero
Serra who was also a man of violence. Serra himself administered
beatings and whippings on the Indians as documented in 1780 when Serra wrote:
"that spiritual fathers should punish their sons, the Indians, with blows”
…that missionaries could, and should, treat their wards
like children, including the use of corporal punishment.[12] (See

today should listen to the Native American Indians in California who are
protesting the canonization of Serra because they were the recipients of the
Serra’s violence and his fellow Franciscans’ violence. Native Americans were unaccustomed to

J. Cordileone, the archbishop of San Francisco, acknowledged Native American concerns about Serra's whippings and coercive treatment,
but argued that missionaries were
also teaching school and farming. (Since when are teachers and farmers
automatically saints?)

labor of converted Indians in order to support the missions.

Pope
Francis announced on Thursday, Januaty 15 his plans to canonize Junipero Serra,
a priest of the Franciscan order of the Catholic Church. Father Serra founded a
string of missions in what was later to become the state of California.
Pope Francis announced he would canonize Father Junipero Serra in September of this year during his visit to the United States. The Pope will visit Philadelphia and now there is speculation that he will also go to California because Father Serra is buried in Carmel.
"I
said somebody pinch me. I am so ecstatic. I've been praying for this for
years," said Andy Galvan, Mission
Dolores curator. Galvan has been lobbying for Father Serra's
elevation to sainthood for years. "He brought the gospel for the first
time into this world and that's what's very significant for practicing
Christians and Catholics here today," he added.
The Catholic
News Service reported the Pope made his announcement to
reporters while aboard a flight from Sri Lanka to the Philippines on Thursday.
Pope Francis explained to reporters his decision to canonize St. Joseph Vaz, a 17th to 18th-century
missionary to Sri Lanka, bypassing the process of verifying a second miracle
attributed to the saint's intercession.
Calling
St. Joseph one of the great evangelists, the Pope said he planned to go ahead
with the canonization without the preliminaries of verifying a second miracle,
and instead celebrate the practice of evangelization. "Now in September, God willing, I will
canonize Junipero Serra in the United States. He was the evangelizer of the West
in the United States," the pope said.
The
darker side of the "Father of the Missions"
This
writer remembers learning about Father Junipero Serra, the founder of the
mission system while in the fourth grade, growing up in California just as do
students today. And while
Father Serra has been credited with opening up new lands to Europeans, it was done at the expense of the indigenous
people who lived there.

This
harsher reality has led to many questions over the canonization of Father
Junipero Serra. Talking with the LA
Times, Thomas P. Rausch, a professor of theological studies at Loyola Marymount
University, said it was an ongoing debate over comparing "an 18th century
Catholic missionary by 21st century standards of cultural diversity, religious
pluralism, and personal autonomy."
Rausch
goes on to say, "There's an enormous bias against Father Serra that may
reflect some of the secular notions that are so prevalent today. The question
we should ask is this: Was the message of the Gospel
worth hearing in the first place?"
Ron Andrade, the director of the Los Angeles
City/County Native American Indian Commission says, "Serra was no saint to us." He points out that during the
Spanish and Mexican colonial period, 90 percent of the native peoples in
California were lost.

Father Serra was beatified September, 25 1988 by
Pope John Paul II. This is the last step before canonization into the sainthood in the
Catholic Church. At the time of Father Serra's beatification, there were a number of
protests, just as there will probably be in September this year. Serra's
advocates cite those times of Spanish colonization and conquest as being the
norm, and also cite records that show Father Serra was an advocate for native
rights, defending many from the Spanish governor.
Rev.
John Vaughn, a Franciscan priest at Mission Santa Barbara, and the appointed advocate
for Father Serra says this: "I don't know how else to put it, but if we want to look at the faults of some of
the things Serra did, we'd have to say the same thing about a number of
American presidents. They were people of their own time."

In 1931,
the statue of a man who stood only a bit taller than five feet and suffered
from a chronically ulcerous leg was unveiled in the U.S. Capitol. This was
Father Junípero Serra, a Spanish-born Franciscan, who in 1749 gave up a
successful career as a priest and university professor in Mallorca and sailed
to Mexico. There he became an apostolic missionary and worked to convert
Indians to Catholicism. Twenty years after he arrived in Mexico, at the age of
fifty-six, Serra was called on to play a crucial role in the settlement and
colonization of Alta California, most notably as the architect of the chain of
Catholic missions that eventually extended from San Diego to just north of San
Francisco. More than eight feet tall, the Serra rendered in the nation’s
Capitol stands much larger than life. His posture suggests a steady movement
forward and over land. He wears a Franciscan habit, holds high aloft in his
right hand a large cross and carries in his left hand a miniature replica of
Mission San Carlos Borromeo, which he founded on the shores of Monterey,
California, in 1770. This mission would be his home until his death in 1784.
Standing
alongside the heroic and saintly Serras of the Capitol and the Catholic Church
is a villainous Serra with the worst features of Christopher Columbus, a man
whose own life story is overshadowed by everything he has come to embody and
symbolize to his detractors.
On the
day that Serra was memorialized in Statuary Hall, speaker after speaker extolled his piety, his tireless
work among the Indians, and most important, his role as the "pioneer of
pioneers" who brought civilization to California. He was lauded as
the man who carried a
message of salvation to the "uncharted shores of the Pacific,"
and in particular he was credited with preparing the slopes of "this western land for the
advance of empire which years later was to press on and fructify."
Serra did so, his
supporters asserted, by bringing to California the key components of the
Pacific agricultural empire: oranges, lemons, olives, figs, grapes, and
vegetables, as well as cattle, sheep, goats, and horses.
To one
degree or another, Serra did accomplish all of that. But today, as historians reexamine
the historical development of the Pacific coast of North America, it is worth contemplating again Serra’s
legacy. In the
almost seventy-five years since the statue of Serra was unveiled, the man’s
fame has only increased, even as his figure has provoked controversy, pitting celebrations against denunciations of his
life and legacy.

I.
To
millions, Serra is more than the founding father of what would become the state
of California. To the Catholic faithful Serra is the saintly embodiment of
timeless virtues: devotion, obedience, and charity. This religious
memorialization of Serra began in his own day and took off in earnest just
after his death. Upon the publication and circulation in 1787 of a hagiographic
account of Serra’s life by Francisco Palóu, one of his fellow Franciscans, the
saintly Junípero Serra
joined a long line of missionaries whose virtues and sacrifices were chronicled
and celebrated so as to stimulate enthusiasm among others for missionary life.
In a woodcut included in Palóu’s Relación histórica de la vida y
apostólicas tareas del venerable padre fray Junípero Serra, Serra stands
above a sea of admiring worshipers. Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth
centuries, Serra remained the object of religious admiration in Spain, Mexico,
and California. The Catholic Church accepted Serra’s cause for canonization in
1985 and declared him Venerable in 1986. Soon thereafter, Pope John Paul II
beatified Serra before some thirty thousand pilgrims at St. Peter’s Square.
Barring some unanticipated occurrence, the Catholic Church likely will canonize
Serra and thereby create its first saint whose legacy is rooted in California
and the American Southwest, presently
the home of one-third of the nation’s thirty-one million Catholics.
Generations of critics of Spanish colonization have
sketched a third Serra, one whose image inverts the portraits of Serra as
pioneer and Serra as saint. To his detractors, Serra embodies an evil system that promoted cultural genocide, sanctioned
corporal punishment, and initiated the demographic collapse of California’s
Indians. For it is Father Serra whose
name is most closely associated with California’s institutions of colonization,
the missions where scores of thousands of Indians became enmeshed in an
oppressive labor system and died prematurely of diseases, many of European
origin. Standing alongside the heroic and saintly Serras of the Capitol
and the Catholic Church is a villainous
Serra with the worst features of Christopher Columbus, a man whose own life
story is overshadowed by everything he has come to embody and symbolize to his
detractors.

II.
Miguel
Joseph Serra was born in 1713, in the town of Petra on the Mediterranean island
of Mallorca. A community of only two thousand people, Petra’s rhythms,
folkways, and institutions were those of early modern Europe. The home in which
Serra was born and raised was a typical farmer’s house of the early eighteenth
century: two stories, built of stone, with an entrance wide enough to serve the
Serras and the family’s mule. Down the street, in the same block, was the
parish church where the infant Serra was baptized the day of his birth.
Young
Serra spent his early childhood working the family land with his father and
attending a Franciscan primary school a stone’s throw from his home. These years were ones of
political turbulence for the island of Mallorca, which had rejected the
authority of Philip V, the first of the Bourbon monarchs to rule Spain.
This resistance led to a loss of Mallorca’s local privilege, and Mallorca became a province of
Spain, not an independent kingdom. Philip V may have been king of Spain,
but his state’s presence on the island was weak, and what Mallorcans denied the monarchy in respect and
power they granted to the Catholic Church. In the world of Serra’s childhood
and youth, Catholicism therefore loomed
large: it was a way of life, a way of ordering the world, the most powerful and
pervasive institution Mallorcans knew. Serra’s own zeal for the
preservation and propagation of the faith may have been honed early on as he
came of age in a world where church and state distrusted one another and were
locked in bitter controversy. During his seventeenth year, Serra joined the Franciscan Order; he
chose for himself the name Junípero, inspired as he was by the life of St.
Francis’s companion. The order Serra joined was a passionate defender of
the Immaculate Conception, and it was dedicated to the teachings of John Duns
Scotus and Ramón Llull.

It was
not unusual for a promising young boy in Mallorca to take holy orders, but it
was unusual for a man to give up the prestige of a university professorship and
the security of the priesthood for the uncertain life of a missionary in the
New World. Serra did so at age thirty-six, after spending more than a decade
preaching throughout Mallorca and nearly as long teaching philosophy and
theology at the Lullian University in Palma, the most important city on the
island. Serra understood his commitment to a new life across the ocean as being
for life. Serra was an
extraordinary correspondent. His letters fill four volumes, but few ever went
back to Mallorca. "With many people I could have kept up friendly
relationships by letter," Serra wrote. But, he continued: "If I was
continually to keep before my mind what I had left behind, of what use would it
be to leave it all?"
Serra
went to Mexico in 1749, drawn by the scope and enormity of the challenge, and
the chance the New World offered him to give freer reign to his ambitious spirit,
which had begun to chafe under the authority of others. By and large his
movement to the New World gave him autonomy—even as he lived the life of an
obedient missionary under the Franciscan Rule. Within just a few years of his
arrival in Mexico, he was
elected by his fellow Franciscans as father president of the Sierra Gorda
missions, chosen ahead of men who had decades of experience in Mexico.
Clearly, it was not only Serra’s religious devotion that his peers valued or
his abilities as a missionary but also his political skills, which in the rough-and-tumble world
of colonial politics meant tenacity and clarity of purpose. It was these
qualities that earned Serra the esteem and at times the wariness of his
colleagues. Further, these skills brought Serra to the attention of his
Franciscan superiors and the viceroy of New Spain, and led to Serra’s selection
in 1767 as one of the chief architects and promoters of Spain’s imperial thrust
into California.

In
Serra’s California endeavors one sees a sudden expansion of energies to meet
multiplying challenges and the deployment of an unusual constellation of
qualities appropriate to the requirements of his new responsibilities. Clearly,
in California—a land where the Spanish state had no entrenched interests and
where the local Indians had no prior experience with Catholicism—Serra believed he had found a land and people that could be remade in
the Lord’s image. Through
the pieties and controversies that surround Serra and his legacy, one
can still clearly see a man of extraordinary endurance, explosive energy, and
unyielding determination, a man who placed his own mark on the heroic dimension
of missionary life. In so doing he extended Spain’s
imperial reach, protected the privileges of the Catholic Church, and ushered in
a period of calamitous change for California’s Indians.
While
Serra constantly distinguished himself through great constancy of purpose and
clarity of vision, he was
not a simple man, and his own character was replete with tensions, ironies,
even paradoxes. Most of these emerged from the vows Serra took in
becoming a Franciscan, promises that immediately set him apart from society
even as they committed him to its reformation. Serra’s willingness to accept the oath of obedience to
his superiors within the Franciscan Order gave him not only great powers over
other missionaries who were obedient to him, but also allowed him a freedom
from and even contempt for other hierarchical institutions, namely the Spanish
monarchy. Serra believed in the nearly absolute powers of the church over the
state, yet he lived in an age when the Bourbon state was increasing its
authority over the Catholic Church. Serra in this sense was a mighty
anachronism. Yet he was more than just a man swimming against the currents of
history. Rather, he sought to reverse the rising tide of regalism that
threatened to overwhelm his missionary order. In a further and more intimate
irony, Serra sought to control Indians’ marriages and sexuality even though his
own vows removed those roles and affairs from his own life. And finally, Serra believed with such certainty that his interpretation of
Catholicism was the only path to salvation that he all too often proved
uncompromising and alienated the very people he sought to convert.

III.
Serra
lived a life in opposition to what California and the Pacific coast of North
America would become: an economically dynamic region of diverse individuals,
integrated into a global economy that transcends national boundaries. Serra’s
distance from our age emerges clearly in a letter he wrote to his nephew in
Petra in 1773. Serra wanted to give the young Miguel de Petra a sense of where
his uncle lived. "Just get out a map of America and look at it,"
Serra advised. "You will see on the coast of the South Sea, mistakenly
called the Pacific Ocean, the California peninsula . . . Follow the coast to
the north, and a little before it says Cape Mendocino, you will find on some
maps the name: Port of Monterey. Well, it is there among these pitiful people
that your uncle is living." Serra’s insistence on Spanish imperial
nomenclature—South Sea or Mar del Sur—not Mar Pacífico—is an
indication of how he incorporated California into his Spanish worldview. In
1513, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, a Spaniard, named the vast ocean west of the
Americas, the Mar del Sur. Seven years later, Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese sailing for Spain,
called the same body of calm water Pacífico. Serra hewed to the
term coined by Balboa, his countryman. Religiously, Alta California was a Spanish
extension of the world of Roman Catholicism; its missions were administered by
the College of San Fernando. Politically, Alta California was the northernmost
frontier of New Spain; its military and civil life was overseen by officials
who ultimately reported to a viceroy. Serra’s mission was to secure
souls for the church and land for the Crown. Those who espoused faiths other
than Catholicism were "pitiful people" to be converted or cast out;
other Europeans—whose preference for different geographic names bespoke rival
agendas or interpretations—had
no place in Serra’s California.
California Indians, of course, challenged Serra’s
religious and political vision at nearly every point—even as they struggled
with the dire biological consequences of Spanish colonization.
Throughout Serra’s tenure in California, no Europeans other than Spaniards set
foot in the province. During Serra’s years as father president of the
California missions (1769-84), the region was so isolated that it came to
resemble the island that Europeans had long believed it to be. In 1781, the
Yuma Indians severed Spain’s tenuous overland route from central Mexico to
California. From then on California’s contact with Mexico would be by sea only.
Serra himself expended no effort to find an economic staple that would make the
colony profitable and therefore more valuable to the Crown. To have done so
would have been to take time away from his attempts to win converts among the
Indians. Moreover, a preoccupation with economic
affairs would have amounted to an embrace of the materialism that his life and
vows opposed. Serra was never a strong advocate of sending settlers
to the region. Indeed, he was
distrustful of them, believing that their bad conduct would delay the Indians’
conversion. It was only after his death that Spanish officials
envisioned for a short while how to incorporate California economically into
Spain’s imperial system.

IV.
Having
arrived in New Spain in 1749 and settled in California twenty years later,
Serra seems hardly ever to have looked back to Mallorca, his family, or his
life across the Atlantic. But, ironically, his vision for California was
inspired by an earlier age, a time when missionaries, Franciscans in
particular, worked in isolated regions where the powers of the state were weak
or nonexistent. Although he could not foresee California’s future, Serra and
his fellow Franciscans did bring to the region many of the seeds of its
eventual greatness. Yet, it was long after Serra’s death, after the passing of
Spanish authority, the destruction of his mission system by secular forces, the

Statement to mark the International Human Rights Day collectively issued by the PAN Asia Pacific (PANAP); Aliansi Gerakan Reforma Agraria (AGRA) of Indonesia, National Fisheries Solidarity Movement (NAFSO) of Sri Lanka; Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) of the Philippines; Human Development Organization (HDO) of Sri Lanka; Unyon ng mga Manggagawa sa Agrikultura (UMA) of the Philippines; Society for Rural Education and Development (SRED) of India; General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of Ghana; Farm Worker Association of Florida (FWAF) of the US; Coalition of Agricultural Workers International (CAWI)
As the world marks the International Human Rights Day today, 10 December, we wish to highlight a form of human rights violation that does not get as much attention but nonetheless deeply impacts millions of people around the world, especially in the poor countries. Land grabbing, often accompanied by the grabbing away of resources such as water, represents a worsening threat to the economic, social and cultural rights of countless local communities, including the indigenous peoples. This systemic violation of human rights, including the right to food, right to self-determination of peoples and right to development, must be stopped.
Data from the Land Portal’s Land Matrix show that worldwide land grabbing involves around 36 million hectares, as of March 2014. Most land grabbing deals are concentrated in Africa and the Asia Pacific region, accounting for about 41% and 38%, respectively of about 942 land deals monitored by the Land Matrix. Within Asia Pacific, land deals are heavily concentrated in Southeast Asia, comprising 83% of the regional total and 32% of the global total. Estimates on the extent of land grabbing vary widely but it could not be denied that it is a daily reality confronting rural and indigenous communities.
In many cases, large-scale land investments for export-oriented plantations, logging, mining, biofuel production and power production among others result to the eviction of small food producers and indigenous peoples, many of whom are without formal security of tenure despite tilling, enriching and occupying the land for decades. National and local governments often negotiate with foreign and domestic investors behind closed doors and in patent disregard for the participation of local communities that will be impacted by such investments, including their access to land and productive resources. These investments are also made and promoted without due consideration to the actual development needs of affected local communities that lead to their further marginalization and oppression.
Worse, the human rights violations against the people even go beyond the actual land grabbing and also involve atrocities that blatantly attack the political and civil rights of those who challenge these land-grabbing deals and investments. There are numerous cases and many of them remain undocumented and unreported, and most are unresolved due to the involvement of state security forces themselves as well as private armed groups hired by the companies. This has been the case in the Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and many others where anti-land grabbing activists, local community leaders, and their supporters face human rights atrocities ranging from extrajudicial killings, abduction, legal persecution and harassment, among others. Impunity reigns in many rural communities that have been heavily militarized to protect corporate investments.
We call on governments and private corporations to respect and implement existing human rights principles enshrined in national laws and international instruments, including the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. We demand that the right to free, prior and informed consent of communities be upheld before any land investments are made.
We demand to respect the customary rights of the people who do not have legal ownership of the land and water bodies. We demand the demilitarization of rural communities and the prosecution of all those who have committed human rights atrocities against people who are justly defending their legitimate right to land and resources. We demand the implementation of genuine agrarian reform to promote the rights and welfare of small food producers and to promote long-term rural and economic development that serves the interests of the people and not the just the elite few.
We welcome recent developments that aim to provide people an opportunity to make corporations that violate their human rights accountable. In particular, we take note of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s (UNHRC) resolution this year calling for the establishment of “an open-ended intergovernmental working group on a legally binding instrument on transnational corporations and other business enterprises with respect to human rights”. Amid continuing trends of free trade and investment agreements that allow TNCs to sue governments, the UNHRC resolution is positive move towards regulating TNCs and their activities in the context of human rights.
We emphasize, however, that the best prospects for the promotion of human rights, including the right to land and resources, lie not in any legal instrument but in the relentless struggle of the affected communities to defend their human rights. Thus, working with those directly affected and violated, we vow to continue the fight to oppose land grabbing and defend the human rights of rural and indigenous communities.

The Philippines Under U.S. Imperialism
The American forces’ murderous reputation and culture of impunity extends internationally. In the Philippines, U.S. Marine PFC Joseph Scott Pemberton violently killed Jennifer Laude, a 26-year-old transgender Filipina. Instead of facing criminal charges under Philippine law, Pemberton is still in U.S. custody and benefits from its protection. Laude’s murder follows the tired pattern of Filipina victims of violence at the hands of U.S. troops illegally stationed in the Philippines. Under the Philippines-U.S. Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) and the 2014 Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), the Philippines has ultimately given up its rights to its colonial American master and relegated Filipinos, and especially Filipina women, to second-class citizens. The inaction and failure of the Philippine government to protect its own citizens exposes its true agenda: to serve the economic and military interests of the U.S.
A case in point of this is the frequent and extreme typhoons that have erased whole communities. Due to Philippine government corruption and pandering to multinational corporations, the country suffers from weak infrastructure, landslides due to large-scale mining and logging, poor warning systems, and hoarding of relief funds and goods by the Philippine government. U.S. military "relief" is in fact a ploy to justify sending in more troops, as to this day, many families have not received any relief and instead have relied on people’s volunteer organizations on the ground and foreign humanitarian groups, such as the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns. Aquino’s political impotence reveals the nature of his presidency as a puppet for U.S. interests.
The U.S.’ imperialist efforts toward political and economic domination is a key contributor to global human rights violations in all its forms. The global migration phenomenon is a result of unjust economic policies designed and implemented to benefit the U.S. and a handful of the most powerful governments and corporations at the expense of migrant workers. Filipinos, especially women, fall victim to labor and sex trafficking. GABRIELA USA is calling for justice for over 300 teachers who were recently trafficked by Isidro Rodriguez in Washington, D.C. Predatory agents like Rodriguez take advantage of the vulnerability of migrant workers due to weak legal protections in both their home and host countries.
The People’s Demands
The Philippine government, under President Benigno Aquino, is complicit in serving the agenda of the U.S. imperialists to break into the markets of the Asia Pacific at the costs of the basic rights and welfare of its own people. GABRIELA USA exposes the U.S. imperialist agenda motivated by profit and power. We oppose state violence against all people in the U.S. and internationally including cis-women, trans-women, immigrants and migrants, and we recognize the common threads in these narratives.
GABRIELA USA joins the voices of our kababayans in calling for President Aquino to step down or be removed by the people’s will. Aquino must answer for countless criminal acts during his regime, including but not limited to facilitation of human trafficking, negligence in response to natural disasters, and abetting the U.S. in its “War on Terror.” Aquino is murdering and terrorizing Filipinos using military funding from the same government that murders and terrorizes its own black and brown communities with highly militarized police forces. It’s all part of a bigger picture and it needs to stop now.

The arrival of Europeans in the New World in 1492 changed the Americas forever. Over the course of the next 350 years, Spain ruled a vast empire based on the labor and exploitation of the Indian population. Conquistadors descended on America with hopes of bringing Catholicism to new lands while extracting great riches.Religion and self-interest combined to create a potent mixture that drew hundreds of thousands of Spaniards across the ocean with hopes of finding riches and winning souls for God. Along with the Spaniards came diseases to which the New World natives had no immunities.
What followed was one of the greatest tragedies in human history as smallpox, influenza, and other communicable diseases ravaged the native populations, killing millions. The Spanish never set out to destroy the people of the New World—after all, their goal was to use Indian labor for their own ends—and almost immediately a debate arose in Spain concerning the rights of Indians. This was the first time any European nation had consciously debated the rights and status of non-Christians. The traffic of Europeans to the Americas was not a one-way street. The so-called Columbian Exchange brought European goods and ideas to the New World—including the horse, which was not native to the Western Hemisphere—and returned new plants and animals to the Old World, including potatoes, corn, tomatoes and other crops. The world was forever changed by the new horizons opened by Spain's intrepid explorers, despite the misdeeds of Spanish rule in America.
Spanish conquistadors, who were primarily poor nobles from the impoverished west and south of Spain, were able to conquer the huge empires of the New World with the help of superior military technology, disease (which weakened Indian resistance), and military tactics including surprise attacks and powerful alliances with local tribes. Once an area had been conquered, it was partitioned intoencomiendas, or grants of land. More importantly, the Indian people themselves were parceled out to the conquistadors, who were given title to the land and its people in return for a promise to teach the natives Christianity. This system was heavily abused, and Indians throughout the Americas were reduced to a condition of virtual slavery.
However, due to natural attrition and harsh misrule, the population of native laborers soon became too small for the voracious Spanish, so they began to import African slaves to work in sugar plantations and silver mines. The introduction of African traditions to the Native American and mestizo cultures already in existence made for a social mixture richer than in almost any other part of the world, although racism continued to play a dark role in the New World. Colonial society was hierarchical, based upon on the amount of non-Spanish blood a person possessed. A complicated system, called the casta, delineated over 100 separate names for groups containing certain levels of Indian and African blood. Jobs, government positions, titles to land, and almost everything else in the Americas functioned according to this system with those at the top getting preference over those lower on the list. Discrimination and repression were features of Spanish colonial rule throughout its history.
Spain's government in Madrid tried hard to govern the New World, despite its distance from Europe. Using a system of viceroyalties and audencias, royal courts of appeals, the Spanish Monarchy was able to exercise control over Spanish settlers, even when they didn't want any sort of interference from the central government. The Crown was entitled to one-fifth of all mining profits, and this huge income helped Spain to become the largest and most powerful empire in Europe by 1600. Religion was mixed with politics to create a hybrid system in what would become the American Southwest: Dominican, Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries were often left in charge of large areas in what is now Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and, later, California. With its goal of bringing the Catholic religion to the New World, Spain was also able to use the existing church governments for its own political uses. Today, religion and politics continue to mix in Latin America.
The often-heavy handed rule from Madrid and the new ideas of liberty and freedom coming out of the American and French Revolutions brought about the wars of Independence in the early nineteenth century. The SPANISH EMPIRE
The Spanish Empire (Spanish: Imperio español) was one of the first empires of global extent, having its peak of political and economic power under the Spanish Habsburgs[1] through the 16th and 17th centuries, becoming the foremost global power of its time, and was the first to be called the empire on which the sun never sets. Its land was eventually administered from Madrid by the Spanish Crown and comprised territories and colonies in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. It originated during the Age of Exploration after the voyages of Christopher Columbus. Spain's territorial reach beyond Europe included the Greater Antilles, half of South America, most of Central America and much of North America(including present day Mexico, Florida and the Southwestern and Pacific Coastal regions of the United States), as well as a number of Pacific Ocean archipelagos including the Philippines.
The bulk of Spain's Empire was held for over three centuries, starting in 1492 with the Spanish colonization of the Americas and lasting until the early 19th centurySpanish American wars of independence that left only Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines as Spanish. Following the Spanish–American War of 1898, Spain ceded its last colonies in the Caribbean and the Pacific to the United States. Its last African colonies were granted independence in 1975. In conjunction with the territories of the Portuguese Empire, which Spain controlled from 1580 to 1640, the Spanish Empire started the European dominance in global affairs.
The Spanish Empire left a cultural and linguistic legacy, particularly in the Western Hemisphere. With over 470 million native speakers today, Spanish is the second most spoken native language in the world, as result of the transfer the language of Castile (Castellano) to Spanish America in the colonial era. The other major cultural legacy of the Spanish empire overseas was Roman Catholicism, converting the indigenous peoples to the new religion in what was known as the "spiritual conquest." Catholicism remains the dominant religious faith in Spanish America.

There’s an elephant quietly sitting in the nave that everyone on all sides of the clergy sex abuse crisis have been diligently ignoring, even the victims themselves. No clergy or even would-be reformers have really remarked on it yet, although it should be more obvious with each and every sad story. More importantly, it is a troubling issue that touches on the very heart and soul of Catholicism.
The monstrous truth is simply this: what the clergy sex abuse crisis clearly demonstrates is that the sacramental system has failed.
This is not just a case of hierarchical reneging of responsibility.There’s more to this than some bad apples. This is nothing that a few reforms can fix, some screening of seminarians or more pastoral responses by bishops. It is nothing less than a fundamental challenge to the entire Catholic Church, and it shows that the spiritual principles the whole structure is supposedly based on simply do not work.
Think about it. The offenders here are Roman Catholic priests, highly trained men. But unlike other professionals, these men are supposedly set apart and dedicated to lives of the spirit. They claim to have the power to forgive sins and make God appear.
They not only administer the sacraments to others, but also receive them themselves daily. That means, among other things, frequent confession to other priests. Moreover, many of these men belong to religious orders or are otherwise under close spiritual direction. They are supposed to confide everything to their confessors and superiors and to obey them unquestioningly.
So what went wrong? When an abusive priest goes to confession, does he start, “Bless me, father, for I have sinned: I buggered an altar boy three times this week”? And does the confessor tell him to say 3 Our Fathers and 4 Hail Marys and not to do it again?
According to their own theory, confessors have the power to forgive sins, but also to refuse to do so if sorrow is insufficient. Moreover, they are to appoint penances – if they wish, they can require satisfaction or significant signs of reform from the penitent before absolution. Some sins – such as solicitation for sex in the confessional – are even deemed so serious that only higher prelates, sometimes only the Pope or his appointed delegate can forgive them.
Yet the abusers continue to abuse. So are the sexually active priestslying to their confessors? This would mean that not only do the perpetrating priests remain in a state of mortal sin and are automatically excommunicated, they perform the sacraments in that state which is itself a grave sacrilege.
Or, even worse, are all the abusive priests linked? Do they only go to confession to like-minded perps who will understand? Is there then an organized network of sexually perpetrating priests, all busily enabling each other? This adds collusion and conspiracy to the sinand would indicate that the very structure itself is rotten to the core.
The evidence available suggests that perhaps both scenarios are true to varying degrees in different situations. Either way, however, the result is much the same.
The sacraments are meant to unite believers with Christ. Not just to remove the accumulations of sin like the weekly laundry, but togradually improve the recipient. They are intended to sanctify and uplift the faithful, increase devotion to God, charity to fellow humans, and moral stamina in the face of evil.
If the sacraments actually worked like this, wouldn’t we hear ennobling stories of clerical reform, of some molester inspired to truly repent and devote himself to the cause? But rather, the stories are depressingly the same, of priests caught time and again, transferred, treated, and now finally, laicized often against their will, with no regret or even acknowledgement of their evil.
What this means, each person must decide in their own conscience. But perhaps the fall off in confessions over the years itself tells the story. Why should anyone, lay or not, risk a ritual that seems so impotent in promoting reform and may, instead of granting grace, actually expose them to greater human wickedness?

Condemn US and Turkey for creating and using ISIS

We, the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS), salute the heroic resistance of the Kurdish people and their army in Rojava, the YPG/YPJ – People’s Protection Units – against the criminal gangs of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) in Kobane, one of the self-governing cantons of West Kurdistan (Rojava) in Syria.
We call on all the more than 300 ILPS member-organizations in 38 countries around the globe to take initiative and express their solidarity and support to the Kurdish people's resistance in Kobane and the whole of Rojava, or join the demonstrations being organized by the Kurdish liberation movement in different parts of the world.
The ILPS condemns the super-terrorist US for creating the ISIS monster that has rampaged through parts of Syria and Iraq, committing hideous crimes against the people in areas that they have overrun. We condemn Turkey for collaborating with the US in creating, arming and coddling this horde of terrorists.
ISIS and similar extremist Islamist terrorist groups like the Al Qaeda and Al-Nustra have been created by the US as part of its over-all scheme to remake the Middle-East, by carrying out regime change in such countries as Libya and Syria that have dared to assert their national sovereignty against imperialist plunder and war. For its part, the Turkish government is using ISIS to attack the Kurdish liberation struggle led by the PKK.
ISIS terrorists have been trained by US Special Forces in secret NATO bases inside Turkey and Jordan. For the last year and a half, the US has been developing what the world has now come to know as ISIS. Turkey has allowed safe passage through its borders of jihadists from different parts of the world to join ISIS, and has facilitated the transport of wounded ISIS terrorists to be treated in hospitals in the Turkish province of Urfa and other cities in Turkey.
The US is remaking the Middle-East in order to consolidate its hegemony in this oil-rich region. It is using the ISIS in the same manner as it has used Neo-Nazi gangs in the Ukraine to stir up trouble and force regime change, toppling the duly-elected president, and replacing him with a pro-Western president and a fascist military junta as part of US-NATO strategy to encircle and pressure Russia.
In the wake of the hideous crimes of the ISIS, including the massacre of Shiites and Christians, and the beheading of Western journalists, the US has pretended to adopt a policy of opposing ISIS and carrying out bombing raids against ISIS. In fact, the US is still thereby using the ISIS as the pretext to violate the national sovereignty of Syria.
The US war planes are actually bombing food granaries and buildings in Syria which are away from ISIS positions. They are now in a position to attack the forces of the Syrian government. Turkey has also exposed its real dirty agenda to attack the Kurdish liberation struggle by bombing PKK forces in Oramar (Daglica) near the border with Iraq, relieving ISIS from the successful counter-attacks of the Kurdish fighters and allowing the ISIS to block humanitarian aid from Iraqi Kurdistan.
The Kurdish resistance forces in Kobane have said that they can defeat the ISIS without any need for foreign intervention such as that falsely offered by the US and Turkey. All they need from Iraqi Kurdistan are sufficient weapons and ammunition against the tanks and vehicles mounted with big guns of the ISIS terrorists.
The terrible crimes being perpetrated by the ISIS and the support given them by the US and Turkey have aroused the anger of freedom-loving people throughout the world. At the same time, the heroic resistance of the YPG/YPJ – the People’s Protection Units – composed of Kurdish men and women, has inspired the people of the world to rally in support of the Kurdish liberation struggle.The acknowledged leader of the Kurdish liberation struggle, Abdullah Ocalan, has called on the entire Kurdish nation to mobilize in support of the resistance in Kobane. Kurds throughout the world have responded by organizing demonstrations in many countries calling for international support.

He says that “there is urgent need for affirmative action in protecting the less affluent of poorer countries, especially African citizens, whose countries are not as scientifically and industrially endowed as the United States and most Western countries, sources of most viral or bacterial GMOs that are strategically designed as biological weapons.” He also asks an important question when he says “It is most disturbing that the U. S. Government has been operating a viral hemorrhagic fever bioterrorism research laboratory in Sierra Leone. Are there others?”Well, Mr. Broderick’s claims seem to be true. After all, the U.S. government has been experimenting with deadly diseases on human beings for a long time, history tells us so. One example is Guatemala. Between 1946 and 1948, the United States government under President Harry S. Truman in collaboration with Guatemalan President Juan José Arévalo and his health officials deliberately infected more than 1500 soldiers, prostitutes, prisoners and even mental patients with syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chancroid (a bacterial sexual infection) out of more than 5500 Guatemalan people who participated in the experiments. The worst part of it is that none of the test subjects infected with the diseases ever gave informed consent. Reverby in 2010 called ‘Wellesley professor unearths a horror: Syphilis experiments in Guatemala.’ It stated how she came across her discovery:Picking through musty files in a Pennsylvania archive, a Wellesley College professor made a heart-stopping discovery: US government scientists in the 1940s deliberately infected hundreds of Guatemalans with syphilis and gonorrhea in experiments conducted without the subjects’ permission. Medical historian Susan M. Reverby happened upon the documents four or five years ago while researching the infamous Tuskegee syphilis study and later shared her findings with US government officials.The unethical research was not publicly disclosed until yesterday, when President Obama and two Cabinet secretaries apologized to Guatemala’s government and people and pledged to never repeat the mistakes of the past — an era when it was not uncommon for doctors to experiment on patients without their consent.After Reverby’s discovery, the Obama administration apparently gave an apology to then-President Alvaro Colom according to the Boston Globe:Yesterday, Obama called President Álvaro Colom Caballeros of Guatemala to apologize, and Obama’s spokesman told reporters the experiment was “tragic, and the United States by all means apologizes to all those who were impacted by this.Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton had called Colom Thursday night to break the news to him. In her conversation with the Guatemalan president, Clinton expressed “her personal outrage and deep regret that such reprehensible research could occur,’’ said Arturo Valenzuela, assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs.
The study in Guatemala was led by John Cutler, a US health service physician who also took part in the controversial Tuskegee Syphilis experiments which began in the 1930’s. Researchers wanted to study the effects of a group of antibiotics called penicillin on affected individuals. The prevention and treatment of syphilis and other venereal diseases were also included in the experimentation. Although they were treated with antibiotics, more than 83 people had died according to BBC news in 2011 following a statement issued by Dr Amy Gutmann, head of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues:The Commission said some 5,500 Guatemalans were involved in all the research that took place between 1946 and 1948. Of these, some 1,300 were deliberately infected with syphilis, gonorrhoea or another sexually transmitted disease, chancroid. And of that group only about 700 received some sort of treatment. According to documents the commission had studied, at least 83 of the 5,500 subjects had died by the end of 1953.Washington’s reaction to the report is a farce. The apology made to Guatemala’s government was for the sake of public relations. Washington knows about its human experimentations in the past with deadly diseases conducted by government-funded laboratories that are known to be harmful to the public. The U.S. government is guilty in conducting numerous medical experiments on people not only in Guatemala but in other countries and on its own territory. As the Boston Globe report mentioned, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study occurred between 1932 and 1972 by the U.S. Public Health Service to study the “natural progression” of untreated syphilis in the African American population. The U.S. Public Health Service and the Tuskegee Institute collaborated in 1932 and enrolled 600 poor sharecroppers from Macon County, Alabama to study the syphilis infection. However, it was documented that at least 400 of those had the disease (they were never informed that they actually had syphilis) while the remaining 200 did not. They received free medical care, food and even free burial insurance for participating in the study. Documents revealed that they were told that they had “bad blood” which meant that they had various medical conditions besides syphilis. The Tuskegee scientists continued to study the participants without treating their illnesses and they also withheld much-needed information from the participants about penicillin, which proved to be effective in treating Syphilis and other venereal diseases. The test subjects were under the impression that they were receiving free health care from the U.S. government while they were deliberately being lied to by the same administrators who were conducting the tests. Washington is fully aware of its human experimentations with deadly diseases. The government of Guatemala also knew about the Syphilis experiments according to the Boston Globe:A representative of the Guatemalan government said his nation will investigate, too — looking in part at the culpability of officials in that country. The records of the experiment suggest that Guatemalan government officials were fully aware of the tests, sanctioned them, and may have done so in exchange for stockpiles of penicillin.However, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services published the study ‘Fact Sheet on the 1946-1948 U.S. Public Health Service Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Inoculation Study’ and was forced to admit what happened in Guatemala during the syphilis experiments:While conducting historical research on the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis, Professor Susan Reverby of Wellesley College recently discovered the archived papers of the late Dr. John Cutler, a U.S. Public Health Service medical officer and a Tuskegee investigator. The papers described another unethical study supported by the U.S. government in which highly vulnerable populations in Guatemala were intentionally infected with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The study, conducted between 1946 and 1948, was done with the knowledge of Dr. Cutler’s superiors and was funded by a grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health to the Pan American Sanitary Bureau (which became the Pan American Health Organization) to several Guatemalan government ministries. The study had never been published.The U.S. government admitted to its wrongdoing, 62 years too late. What Dr. Broderick wrote is not conspiratorial in any sense. The U.S. government has been involved in bioterrorism; Guatemala is a case in point. To ensure a future that has less of this kind of drama, it is important that we now demand that our leaders and governments be honest, transparent, fair, and productively engaged. They must answer to the people. Professor Francis Boyle of the University of Illinois, College of Law questions the Obama administration’s actions in West Africa.
