News from the Dominican Republic today shows the unrest and clamor for the ending of the Vatican Concordats which is especially spearheaded by a leading evangelist Ezequiel Molina who slammed the Concordat, which in his view protects priests accused of pedophilia. The Vatican Concordat in the Dominican Republic forced the country to adopt Catholicism as its "official and one-and only religion" and therefore forbids and quashes Evangelists and other religion to preach or to thrive. A Catholic Youth Ministry Coordinator, Luis Rosario, said that he wrote his thesis, 30 years ago, about 'the need of an overall review of the Concordat, because in his view that kind of agreement has to be revised as time passes'.

How the Vatican suppress and obstruct women’s rights in the Dominican Republic

In 2009, on April 21, the day of the first Congressional vote hundreds of women stood behind the barrier in front of the Senate in the afternoon sun, carrying signs such as “No Rosaries on our Ovaries”. They were confronted by riot police and also by the massive “Crusade for Life” demonstration led by the powerful Cardinal Archbishop Nicolas de Jesus Lopez, who also heads the chaplaincy for both the military and the police.

Against this coalition of Church and state the advocates of human rights had little chance. And the Dominican Republic is just the beginning. As one of the Vatican’s jubilant Evangelical allies noted, this is meant to serve as “an example” to the other countries of Latin America. [11]

Political deal lets Vatican in on new Dominican Republic constitution

A back-room deal between two politicians made the Dominican Republic the first country to enshrine three current Vatican policies in its new Constitution. One amendment is expected to increase dangerous back-alley abortions and unwanted births in a poor country where more than a third can’t afford enough to eat. But for the Catholic Church it marked a milestone in its programme to promote reproduction at all costs.

By defining life as existing from the moment of conception until death, the “right to life” amendment, outlaws several methods of birth control. This is expected to drive desperate women to the back alley abortionists. [1] The Vatican, however, seems unconcerned at the prospect of unwanted births in a poor country where more than a third can’t afford enough to eat. It’s the Dominican women and children who will bear the brunt of the papal policy, but for the Catholic Church it marks a milestone in a programme drawn up under the last pope, John Paul II, to promote reproduction at all costs.

In 1993 John Paul II first referred to a “culture of life”, a concept used to justify Church involvement in “human life from the first moment of conception until its natural end”. [2] The idea is brilliant because, although its main aim is to make sure Church members outbreed the competition, its consistency keeps this from being apparent. Attention is drawn away from the bans on birth control and abortion by two further bans: one on ending your own life (voluntary euthanasia) and another on carrying out the death penalty (capital punishment). Of course, forbidding voluntary euthanasia also serves to give the Church more control over people’s end-of-life decisions, but its primary function seems to be to lend the campaign a consistency which masks its reproductive purpose. And the ban on capital punishment makes it philosophically complete (and, incidentally, keeps anyone from even suspecting that the pope himself stopped executing wayward subjects only in the late 19th century when he lost the power to continue, because he lost his kingdom [3]). So strategically brilliant is this “culture of life”, and so blinding is its philosophical consistency, that it has been taken over by many Evangelical Protestant groups, as well. (The only stumbling block for some of them is a reluctance to renounce capital punishment.) This, in turn, has given the Catholic Church useful allies worldwide who have helped it in its drive to amend the Dominican Constitution.

The next indication that the “life-at-all-costs” campaign was about to be launched came in 1994 with the beatification of the mother needed to personify it. Since the idea was to make it glamorous to die in childbirth, the Vatican didn’t choose a poor woman in Africa, where most of these preventable deaths occur. Instead the Church selected an Italian paediatrician married to an engineer, who also happened to have three photogenic blonde toddlers. Shorn of the medico-religious hysteria [4], it seems that, following treatment for a common (and generally not very threatening) condition early in her pregnancy, and several days after giving birth, she died from a complication whose cause is unknown. Sad, but not, on the face of it, particularly saintly. However, the success of modern obstetrics has served to limit the Vatican’s pool of martyrs to motherhood and Gianna Beretta Molla would have to do. She was put on the fast track for canonisation, a questionable miracle [5] was found, and in 2004 the Church got its patron saint for maternal mortality. Now, for only $24.99 (list price $29.99), you can have your own Saint Gianna sweatshirt [6] with the motto: “No mother hath greater love than this: that she gave her life for her own child”.

The year after setting Gianna on the path to sainthood, John Paul II unveiled the theological part of the campaign with his “life-at-all-costs” encylical, Evangelium vitae. [7] This document reveals a two-pronged strategy. Not only does it effectively exhort women to bear children until they drop, it also obliges Catholic voters, judges and legislators to obey Vatican teaching in their decisions and their votes (§ 73). In other words, not content with urging women to reproduce, it also tries to ensure that the laws of the state conform to those of the Church, so that women have no other choice.

The next step was to try to get Vatican teaching anchored in the constitutions of the world, where it would form the basis of national legislation. The first, unsuccessful attempt was made in Poland in 2006 [8]. Then in 2008 the Vatican saw another chance, this time in the Caribbean, where the Constitution of the Dominican Republic was about to be amended. Unlike the failed attempt in Poland, here the Vatican doctrines were combined with other, more politically appealing, constitutional amendments. And among these was a remarkable last-minute addition which all but ensured its passage

On May 11, 2009 the Dominican President and the leader of the main opposition party held a secret meeting where they struck a deal for a mutually beneficial constitutional change. [9] Their amendment did two things: it eliminated consecutive terms for the president and it removed the Constitution’s “never again” clause. This prevented the President from running in the 2012 elections, thus increasing the opposition leader’s chance of winning then, while also allowing the President to run again in 2016. In exchange for this curious arrangement (whose full text was not released), the main opposition party, as expected, voted with the governing party to pass the amendments. This served to enshrine Vatican teaching in the Constitution where it will now forms the basis of the country’s laws.

Many Dominicans protested. [10] Both the College of Physicians and the Dominican Gynaecology and Obstetrics Society spoke out, and concerned women took to the streets. “Miracles” not revised in the light of new evidence

According to the Church account, Elizabeth Comparini, who lost her amniotic fluid early in her pregnancy, was told by doctors that the chance of her baby surviving was “nil”. Yet by praying to Gianna Molla she was able to deliver a healthy baby, after all.

However, as Dr. Antony Lempert points out, a study published several years later shows that losing amniotic fluid doesn't necessarily doom the baby.

He concludes, “Scientific opinion inevitably changes according to the evolving evidence. Sainthood does not appear to have the same safeguards.”

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Vatican’s nuncio in the country said yesterday that the Supreme Court does not have the faculty to eliminate the Concordat between Dominican Republic and the Holy See, as an evangelical organization requested yesterday.
Timothy Broglio described as absurd the efforts of the Ministry Jesus is Health and Life, which yesterday filed a appeal of unconstitutionality against the agreement signed between the Dominican State and the Vatican.
He said that the Concordat is an international agreement that only can be nullified with the consent of the parts, as the norms of international law establish. "That is a treaty, then, if some of the parts in the treaty want to review the treaty, it is conducted through the appropriate channels, which would be through the Foreign Ministry with the Nunciature, or the embassy of the Dominican Republic in the Holy See," he said.
Broglio said, however, that it’s in agreement with a revision, as other countries have made, among them Colombia, Spain and Italy.
Yesterday an appeal of unconstitutionality against the Concordat was filed before the Supreme Court, under the argument that it converts the catholic religion into the official faith, in detriment of the other churches.
The appeal was filed by the Ministry Jesus is Health and Eternal Life, arguing that the international agreement is contrary to several articles of the Constitution and the Universal Declaration on Human rights and the American Agreement on Human Rights.

During Nuria's investigative news program also documented two other testimonies in the Plaza of Montesinos, that coincide the Catholic Nuncio used to frequent that place.

We hope that these young people were not threatened, as is the custom and modus operandi of this criminal institution known as the Vatican [or "Catholic Church"], and do not rule these testimonies as "invalid" or "insufficient evidence", since they silence victims with money or threats.

The lead investigator in the child sexual abuse case against former Vatican envoy Józef Wesolowski (fired from his position for being at the center for this scandal in Dominican Republic) on Sunday revealed that the priest Wojciech Gil (Padre Alberto), accused of the crimes in Juncalito, Santiago, had more than 87,000 pornographic photos and videos with children on the parish computer.

Deputy prosecutor Bolivar Sanchez said among other details, the Justice Ministry’s and the National Police’s tech crimes units analyzed Gil’s hard drive and found a large number of porno images.

"Many of the photos are pornographic and other insinuations of children posing with lingerie as if they were girls, minors having relationships with adults and children having homosexual relationships,” the official said.

Dominicans Demand Punishment for Pedophile Priests

Santo Domingo, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) Dominican organizations are planning to ask for former papal nuncio Josef Wesolowski and two priests accused of alleged child rape to be brought to justice.

The demand will occur at a central intersection in the capital, in front of the Papal Nunciature, said two of the organizations, Colectiva Mujer y Salud and La Multitud.

"We will demand that Dominican justice intervene so that these cases do not go unpunished and the victims can be compensated through criminal and civil actions against the defendants," reads the call.

At least seven children between the ages of 13 and 18 were identified as victims of sexual abuse by Wesolowsk, said Deputy Attorney Bolivar Sanchez yesterday. Sanchez is in charge of the criminal investigation which began last week.

Catholics make up around 30% of Germany's population but the number of congregants leaving the church swelled to 181,000 in 2010, with the increase blamed on revelations of sexual abuse by Catholic priests in Germany.

“This decree makes clear that one cannot partly leave the Catholic Church,” Germany's bishops' conference said last week, in a decision endorsed by the Vatican.

Unless they pay the religious tax, Catholics will no longer be allowed to receive sacraments, except before death, or work in the Catholic church and its schools or hospitals!

But wait. It gets better. Without a “sign of repentance before death, a religious burial can be refused”, the decree states. Opting out of the tax would also bar people from acting as godparents to Catholic children.

“This decree at this moment of time is really the wrong signal by the German bishops who know that the Catholic church is in a deep crisis,” said Christian Weisner from the grassroots Catholic campaign group We Are Church.

But a priest from Mannheim in south-western Germany came quickly to defend as expected, he is Father Lukas Glocker, who dared to say "the tax was used to do essential good works". While the decree severely limits active participation in the German Catholic Church, it does hold out some hope for anyone considering a return to the fold.

Until now, any German Catholic who stopped payment faced eventual excommunication. Although the measures laid out in the decree are similar to excommunication from the church, German observers say the word is carefully avoided in the decree.

The Socialists insist the Catholic Church receives 6.5 billion euros from the State yearly and claim that with this money there would be no cuts.

Socialist Youth of Spain (In Spanish: Juventudes Socialistas de España (JSE)) has just announced that it will launch a campaign that seeks to claim a new framework for relations between the State and the Catholic Church ("The Vatican") and the 6.5 billion euros that Spain automatically gives to the Catholic Church yearly, all intended "to avoid cuts" that the State is experiencing as a result.

As for Spain, people are awakening to these concordat agreements and raising their voice against them, prompting groups like the Socialist Youth of Spain to speak out. The general secretary of Socialist Youth, Nino Torre, has unveiled the abovestated campaign during his participation in the Federal Council of Socialist Youth of Spain, held today in Santander.
In this Federal Council, it approved a resolution, calling upon the need for a new framework of relations between Spain and the Vatican State (which is otherwise known as the "Catholic Church").

JSE will bring this resolution to the PSOE, with the confidence that the party's assume "as their own", but if it does not promote a petition ahead of the processing as Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP). And also, to spread this positioning, the campaign starts #nuevoPAPAnuevasNORMAS ", (Spanish for #NewPopeNewNorms) mainly through social networking.

Torre points out that this campaign is not an "attack" to the Catholic Church, because Socialist Youth of Spain "respect all beliefs." But states that this organization wants to adopt new agreements that are based on the autonomy and financial sufficiency of the Catholic Church in Spain, and a new framework for relations based policies with state separation.

Tower has considered "intolerable" the fact that in 2012 the Catholic Church has received more than 6.5 billion euros, not only money but also tax exemptions. In making the calculation, JSE includes tax allocation of the State Budget, other budget allocations, concerts and educational subsidies, salaries of teachers of religion, "direct care", the items for chaplains of public institutions, IBI exemptions, and NGO aid "related to the Catholic Church."

Now, compare the 6.5 billion euros -that would come from these concepts- to that of the "cuts" of the 2012 State Budget in education, university education, dependency, health, culture, which is 3.22 Billion euros.

With this data, JSE concludes that if "only half of that money was given to the Church, those cuts would have not been made," adding that, for example, with the other half of these resources "could have meant the Quad year to youth employment policies."

But also JSE asks to eliminate this "privilege" that, in his opinion, has allowed the Spanish bishops' public property register as belonging to the Church.

Another of their demands is that tax exemptions be taken away from the Catholic Church, especially that of Property Tax (IBI). It also requires the removal of civil effects of canonical marriage, so that the civilian is the only valid type for the state, and to take away religion teachers in public schools.

The priest has responded with the usual norm for the Catholic Church when facing sex scandals - denying the accusations despite the pictures and videos that catch him in the act and the religious dog had the audicity to tell laverdad.es, "I have never been to Cotos Cuadros and I do not recognize myself in these images that are said to be of me. This must be a fake. This material should be destroyed because if it is not it is going to create a scandal."

Both the pictures and the video quickly became trending topics on Twitter. The video shows a bicycle ride recorded by a cyclist who is taking pictures when he suddenly passes a figure dressed in black, alleged to be the priest, engaged in fellatio with another man (see video below).

Photographs reveal in greater detail that the man in black has his pants down while both men are engaged in mutual masturbation. Sources in Churra claim that the priest reported the video to police on Wednesday afternoon as a fake.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, denied the Vatican was trying to shield Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski by recalling him to Rome before Dominican prosecutors had announced their investigation.

The Holy See recalled Wesolowski on Aug. 21 and relieved him of his job as apostolic nuncio after the archbishop of Santo Domingo, Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez, told Pope Francis about the allegations in July.

Dominican prosecutors announced their investigation last week, largely in response to local media reports of allegations of sexual misconduct by Wesolowski, 65, as well as a friend and fellow Polish priest, who is also outside the country.

Fr. Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican press office, said that the Holy See continues to cooperate fully with ongoing investigations into Archbishop Józef Wesolowski, former apostolic nuncio to the Dominican Republic.

Because there is no extradition treaty between the Vatican and the Dominican Republic, the Holy See is not required to return the nuncio to Dominican officials. In addition, the Vatican has a legal right to invoke diplomatic immunity in protection of the nuncio.

However, Fr. Lombardi told CNA on Sept. 12 that the Holy See has declared “our intention to cooperate with the Dominican authorities whenever they require it.”

The recall of the nuncio to the Vatican “by no means implies the desire to prevent him from assuming his responsibility for whatever may come out of the investigations” in the Dominican Republic,” Fr. Lombardi explained.

Santo Domingo.- Vatican press director Federico Lombardi on Monday affirmed that the measures taken by the Papacy regarding former nuncio in Dominican Republic Josef Wesolowski, don’t represent in any way an attempt to sidestep his responsibilities.

He said in August, the Holy See’s State Department communicated to Dominican Republic’s Ambassador its willingness to the cooperate with the Caribbean nation’s authorities when they so requested.

In a press conference, Lombardi said in July cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez had already reported to the Pope the allegations against the then nuncio in Dominican Republic.

(Reuters) - The Vatican said on Thursday it would cooperate with Dominican Republic authorities investigating the Holy See's former ambassador on suspicion of pedophilia and denied the envoy had been recalled to protect him from local justice.

Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, 55, was recalled in August and relieved of his duties after local media accused him of sexual abuse of children.

In the first formal statement on the case, the Vatican said its sex crimes prosecutor had opened an investigation into the allegations.

Cardinal Nicolas Lopez Rodriguez of Santo Domingo personally informed Pope Francis in late July that there had been "serious accusations" against Wesolowski, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said in the written statement.

But, the gist of it is that the Vatican is cooperating with officials in the Dominican Republic who are investigating the former nuncio to that country, Archbishop Josef Wesolowski, who has been accused of paying young boys for sex. As a member of the diplomatic corps, Wesolowski might enjoy immunity and there is no extradition treaty between the Holy See and the DR. So, this indication from the Vatican spokesman signals something truly extraordinary, a chink in the self-protective clerical armor that might, God willing and over time, put an end to the idea that once you get a miter, you are accountable to no one. Stay tuned. This is going to be a very important case to watch.

The Vatican has stated that it will cooperate with authorities in the Dominican Republic over an investigation into allegations of paedophilia by a Polish archbishop.

Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, who had been serving as papal nuncio in the Caribbean republic, was recalled to the Vatican on August 21, and simultaneously suspended from his post.

The recall occurred after the archbishop of Santo Domingo, Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez, informed Pope Francis about the allegations in July, and the Vatican launched an internal investigation.

With Dominican prosecutors confirming their own investigation last week, accusations snowballed that the Vatican was trying to shield the 65-year-old archbishop, prompting Thursday's Vatican statement.

Parents of several children in the Dominican Republic have accused the Vatican's sacked envoy to the Caribbean nation of pedophilia, authorities said.

“There are a number of parents who have filed reports'' against Polish national Josef Wesolowski, deputy prosecutor Bolivar Sanchez said.

Sanchez was tapped by Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito to lead the investigation, AFP reports.

“So far, we have interviewed three [boys] here; in another location we interviewed four more boys,'' said Sanchez. “They are all from 13 to 18 years old and mainly from very poor neighborhoods.’’

He added there were “some very painful situations.’’

On August 21 Monsignor Wesolowski, the papal nuncio in Santo Domingo, was sacked. The Vatican did not share the news with the public.

Last week, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told the I.Media news agency on Vatican affairs that an investigation was underway in Rome into allegations of child sex abuse against Wesolowski.

Santo Domingo.- of Santo Domingo Archbishop cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez Tuesday night confirmed that it was he who informed the Vatican about the alleged wrongdoing by former envoy Jósef Wesolowski, accused of sexually molesting several minors.

"I gathered some information and reported directly to the Pope, it was only that, I spent three days in the Vatican," he said, and confirms reports in that regard.

He said he’s unaware of the ex nuncio’s whereabouts.

Lopez revealed having some confidential information, but no evidence on Wesolowski, who he affirms will be processed in a Vatican court which deals with child abuse cases.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - The Dominican Republic's Catholic archbishop has confirmed that the Vatican will investigate the country's recently removed papal envoy over allegations of child sex abuse.

Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez told reporters late Tuesday that Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski will be investigated by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the office that deals with abuse allegations.

"This is an extremely serious issue, very serious, the most serious of its kind for the Holy See," Lopez said.

It is believed to be the first known sex abuse investigation against a high-ranking Vatican official in recent times, though former Vatican officials have also been accused after they left Rome.

Lopez said he personally travelled to the Vatican to meet with Pope Francis to talk about the allegations involving the 65-year-old Wesolowski. ...

Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito said if the government finds any concrete evidence against Wesolowski, it would seek his extradition. He noted, however, that the Dominican Republic has no extradition agreement with the Vatican.

A report in The New York Times notes that Juan Carlos Cruz said that he and the others who have accused the Reverend Fernando Karadima of abusing them when he headed the El Bosque parish in Santiago in the 1980s 'hope to establish the responsibility of the church, which always knew what was going on and looked the other way'. In 2011, the Vatican found Karadima guilty of the abuses and ordered him to retire 'to a life of prayer and penitence'. The report states that a Chilean judge dismissed criminal charges later that year because a statute of limitations had expired, but he also described the accusations as 'truthful and reliable'.

Silenced Redemptorist priest Fr Tony Flannery said in Dublin tonight he believed the best way he could continue to serve the Church was by bringing into the light of day “the arcane and unjust processes that are the modus operandi of the Vatican watchdog, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF).”

This was particularly the case as he had “given up hope of being allowed to minister as a priest again.”

Fr Flannery was silenced, removed from public ministry and threatened with excommunication by the Vatican last year because of his views on priesthood and Catholic teaching in the area of human sexuality.

Speaking tonight in the Royal Hibernian Academy at the launch of his new book A Question of Conscience by broadcaster Bill O’Herlihy, he said “it seemed to me that we had reached the end of the road. I was forbidden to minister as a priest and the conditions of returning to ministry were such that I could not comply with them without compromising my integrity.”

Fr Tony Flannery, who has been suspended from ministry and threatened with excommunication by Rome for expressing views at odds with church teaching, told The Tablet he would withdraw from the administrative team at the association's AGM next month. He said the next six months may determine his future as a priest.

A new book by Redemptorish priest Fr Tony Flannery, who was silenced and removed from public ministry by the Vatican last year, is not available in Veritas bookshops. Owned by the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference, there are 11 such bookshops in Ireland.

Fr Flannery’s book A Question of Conscience was published in Dublin last night and details his dealings with the Vatican last year.

Contacted by The Irish Times yesterday about availabity of the book in its shops, a Veritas spokeman said he believed there was an issue the publishers, Londubh Books. He asked that questions be emailed to him and said these would be forwarded to senior managers who were on a trip to the US. As of last night, there was no response to the questions.

Priest appears in court on child sex charges

A FORMER priest made an eight-minute appearance in court today on sex charges involving children.

Francis Cullen, 85, denied the allegations and was told he would stand trial at Derby Crown Court on March 24.

The timetable was approved by Judge Andrew Hamilton, who remanded Cullen in custody.
Cullen followed the hearing via a video link from Nottingham Prison, where he is being held.

He will be brought to the Derby court on December 20 where a bail application could be made.

To give the survivors of horrific childhood abuse the support and care they need, we must properly understand the threat that suicide poses to victims, writes Mark Vincent Healy.

PERHAPS THERE CAN be no darker subjects than suicide and clerical child sexual abuse. When they are combined, where there is strong evidence in countless surveys and reports to suggest there is a direct link between them, one is perhaps doubly horrified by such issues. It’s a topic which can refer all too often to a horrific beginning to one’s life as it does a most tragic end.

I felt moved to do something about the combined suffering of suicide and clerical child sexual abuse and attended the launch of the World Suicide Prevention Week on Thursday 5 September 2013 at the Department of Health, Hawkins House.

As a campaign survivor of child sexual abuse by members of the Spiritans or Holy Ghost Fathers, I am mindful of the failures of this congregation to address my needs and those of others survivors and their distraught families with whom I am in contact. I have been told by the Acting CEO, Ms Teresa Devlin of the National Board for Safeguarding Children that she has received update reports from second tranche participants which once processed will be published later this month.

There is a connection between these events and their subjects and it’s a very tragic and important one.

Pope Francis has suspended a German bishop for financial misdeeds.

But he ignores bishops who have concealed or are concealing child sex crimes. He should suspend them promptly, starting with Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City Missouri, who was convicted in 2012 of withholding evidence- hundreds of sexual photos of young girls - from police.

There are many bishops who should be suspended. But Finn is the most clearly proven wrongdoer. His guilt was established in an impartial trial in open court, despite a bevy of experienced and highly-paid lawyers fighting on his behalf.

Many Catholics no doubt applaud the German bishop’s suspension. But think about the message it sends hundreds of thousands of victims of child molesting clerics: “The Pope cares more about saving the church’s money than about saving the church’s children.”

One reason to suspend a wrongdoer is to deter others from emulating him. So what’s more crucial to deter? Child sex crimes and cover ups? Or financial extravagance?

Civil liberties group sues Canada government ver spying

Ottawa —A Canadian civil liberties group on Tuesday sued the government's electronic eavesdropping agency, claiming that its "broad and unchecked" surveillance is unconstitutional and an illegal invasion of privacy.

The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association alleges that the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC)'s interception of Canadians' private communications and sweeping collection of metadata are unconstitutional.

These activities, it said in a statement, amount to unreasonable search and seizure, and infringe on free expression -- as people who feel they are being watched may not speak freely.

Furthermore, in its lawsuit filed in the British Columbia Supreme Court the group demands that the agency obtain warrants from a judge for individual operations, rather than simply a nod from the minister of defense.

"Unaccountable and unchecked government surveillance presents a grave threat to democratic freedoms," BCCLA lawyer Joseph Arvay said in a statement.

"We are deeply concerned that CSEC is gaining secret, illegal access to the private communications of ordinary Canadians, and there are no reasonable safeguards in place to monitor its activities," he said.

"We know from the experiences of other countries that government agencies have a tendency to push and even break the boundaries of spying unless they are checked."

The CSEC has come under scrutiny after Brazilian TV station Globo alleged earlier this month that the agency had carried out industrial espionage against Brazil's government.

The report was based on documents leaked by former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, who is wanted by the United States after revealing details of its NSA's massive snooping activities.

CSEC head John Forster has said that his agency "does not target Canadians at home or abroad."

"Protecting the privacy of Canadians is our most important principle," he said in a speech in Ottawa on October 9.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has expressed concern about the allegations, but noted that an independent commissioner oversees the CSEC's activities to ensure compliance with Canadian laws.

The BCCLA said metadata collected by the CSEC is automatically produced each time a Canadian uses a mobile phone or accesses the Internet.

It includes the exact geographic location of the mobile phone user, records of phone calls and Internet browsing, and according to the BCCLA, can reveal "the most intimate details of Canadians' personal lives, including relationships, and political and personal beliefs."

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Justice on Friday sent to its Poland counterpart the case file and indictment against Catholic priest Wojciech Gil (Alberto Gil), charged with sexually abusing seven boys in the town of Juncalito, northern Santiago province.
The victims’ depositions, psychological evaluations as well as evidence to seek Gil prosecution were sent by the Ministry’s International Affairs Dept., after concluding the investigation headed by Santiago province Prosecutor Luisa Liranzo.
"We’ve been working in permanent coordination with Poland’s Ministry of Justice, seeking that an occurrence like this, which has shattered the entire Dominican society, doesn’t go unpunished. We will do as much as is technically and legally possible to achieve an exemplary conviction in this case," said Justice minister Francisco Domínguez in a statement.
Gil is accused of sexually abusing the minors while heading the parish at Juncalito, a rugged community near Janico township.

Prosecutors in the Dominican Republic are looking to extradite a Polish priest accused of sexually molesting seven children. At a news conference on Thursday Oct. 28, Santiago prosecutor Luisa Liranzo announced the Dominican Republic was seeking to extradite Rev. Wojciech Gil, a Roman-Catholic priest who ran a parish in the town of Juncalito for eight years. When the allegations of sexual abuse was first made against Gil, he was in Poland on vacation. The 36-year-old priest has remained in Poland and denies abusing the children.
The BBC is reporting that authorities in the Dominican Republic have found over 80,000 images and videos on his computer. The footage on the priest's computer has been called "inappropriate." Rev. Gil has made phone calls to reporters in the Dominican Republic saying he is not guilty of child molestation. Authorities in the DR reached out to Interpol for help locating the priest. They found Gil last month, but did not arrest him since the Interpol warrant was only for his location.
Liranzo announced at a press conference that they would be indicting Gil for the sexual abuse of the seven children. Accusations against the priest say he would promise the children trips to the beach and to Europe if they dressed in provocative clothing and posed in pictures and appeared in videos. Another allegation says Gil has been abusing one boy for three years. This case will have trouble moving forward if the priest is not returned to the Dominican Republic. This proves to be complicated since there is no extraction treaty between the DR and Poland.

Santo Domingo.- One of most outspoken Catholic priests on Thursday said he agrees with revising the sweeping pact in effect for more than half a century between the Vatican and the Dominican Republic, known as the Concordat, slammed by one of the country’s leading evangelists.

Catholic Youth Ministry Coordinator Luis Rosario said 30 years ago his thesis was over the need of an overall review of the Concordat, because in his view that kind of agreement has to be revised as time passes.

He affirmed that some parts of the pact aren’t being enforced, and as an example cited the ban of divorce, because that has been repealed by local laws.

The Vatican has said that a Polish archbishop accused of child abuse while serving as papal nuncio in the Dominican Republic cannot be extradited to Poland.
The confirmation follows a request for clarification by the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw concerning Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, one of two Polish clergyman accused of child abuse in the Dominican Republic.
“Archbishop Wesolowski is a citizen of the Vatican, and Vatican law does not allow for his extradition,” a statement from the Holy See clarified.
Przemyslaw Nowak from the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw has said the Vatican has confirmed that it is proceeding with its own investigation concerning the archbishop.
Wesolowski was recalled by the Vatican from his post as papal nuncio in the Dominican Republic in August 2013, and dismissed from office.

Today, there’s yet another clear sign that nothing’s changing in the Catholic hierarchy: Vatican officials are refusing to extradite a credibly accused child molesting church official.

Pope Francis can ride buses, carry luggage, charm reporters and be humble all he wants. If he wants to stop kids from being raped and sodomized, however, he must act. He must reverse the centuries-old practice of Vatican officials protecting other Catholic officials from law enforcement. And he’s not a young man. He should start now.
We call on Pope Francis to stop harboring Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski and send him to Poland immediately. If Wesolowski refuses, Pope Francis should kick him out of the Vatican, stop paying him, and harshly denounce him in public.
Next week, Vatican officials will be questioned in Geneva by a United Nations panel on how the church hierarchy handles child sex abuse cases. That session will be live and on line, so anyone can watch it. We can’t imagine how top Catholic officials will defend this indefensible move.

Pope Francis Concealed His Actions Against Two Prelates. Now Both “Whereabouts are Unknown.”

A “dossier" accusing papal nuncio Archbishop Josef Wesolowski of sex abuse of minors was sent to Pope Francis sometime in July by Santo Domingo Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez. The pope found the information credible enough to dismiss Wesolowski, nuncio to both the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, on Aug. 21 via confidential letter N.2706/PR to the bishops of both countries.

Neither the civil authorities nor the public knew about Wesolowski until a local TV program did an expose’ on Aug. 31. The result of a year-long investigation, the broadcast contained testimony from residents of the Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo that Wesolowski paid minors for sex.

Three days after the TV broadcast, a local bishop confirmed that Wesolowski had been recalled for sexually abusing minors.

Wesolowski reportedly had left the country only a few days before. There were accusations that the pope allowed his nuncio to escape and speculation that Wesolowski fled to Haitiwhere children are even more desperately poor.

On Sept. 23, the Dominican Republic’s Justice Ministry confirmed there was evidence of pedophilia against Wesolowski. A deacon confessed to “pimping” minors for the prelate who allegedly waited in his vehicle nearby. The deacon, Francisco Javier Occi Reyes, who is being held in pretrial prison on pedophilia charges, was arrested when one of Wesolowski’s alleged victims alerted a police officer. The deacon said on that occasion Wesolwski left but said nothing because he thought the Church’s influence would get him out of prison.

The Deputy Procurator and the case’s lead investigator, Bolivar Sanchez, noted that Wesolowski cannot be extradited because of his diplomatic status. He said the minors interviewed admitted to masturbating for, and of taking part in oral sex with the bishop as he filmed them with a cell phone. Another witness affirmed seeing child pornography on Wesoloski’s laptop at the Vatican embassy. Sanchez confirmed that when the local Catholic Church submitted the evidence to the Vatican, the Justice Ministry was unaware of the case but has received full cooperation after the investigation was launched.

Wesolowski is a Polish national and the story is receiving wide coverage in that county. An investigative reporter for Poland’s Newsweek confirmed that Wesolowski was well known in the Zona Colonial. The reporter was told that the nuncio paid youths 500 pesos to masturbate in front of him. Occasionally they were paid 3,000 pesos for “full” sex.

“Confidence in the Church has suffered,” the secretary general of the Polish bishops’ conference, Bishop Wojciech Polak, said. He asked for forgiveness. “It’s the least I can do,” he told reporters. Polak, however, rejected the idea of financial compensation for the victims from the Church. Rather, only the person responsible for these acts should make restitution. Also, the Polish hierarchy said there has been no contact with Wesolowski and that his whereabouts remain unknown.

Similarly, Pope Francis sent confidential letter N315/2012 to the bishops in Peru on May 24, 2013, dismissing Auxiliary Bishop Gabino Miranda Melgarejo of Ayacucho, a poor Andean region in southern Peru. According to this newspaper report, no reason was given and there was no public announcement.

Miranda had led the youth ministry of Peru's bishops' conference since 2007 and had accompanied the group “to other countries” and to Spain in 2011 for a World Youth Daycelebration, the same event recently attended by Pope Francis in Brazil.

Miranda was reported to be an Opus Dei priest. But the group said he had only received “spiritual assistance” from the organization, meaning that while not ordained as an Opus Dei priest, Miranda was a diocesan priest “intrinsically united to Opus Dei.” This would explain how poor kids could have traveled since Opus Dei would have paid for their trips.

On Aug. 21, a Spanish lawyer, Francisco Jose de la Cigona, wrote in his blog that the Vatican “accepted the resignation” of Miranda for “having sex with minors and adults, too” which had been “solicited in confession.” His informant confirmed that Miranda’s name had been removed from the archdiocesan website.

Diego Garcia Sayan, president of the Inter-American Court on Human Rights, wrote in his Sept. 19 La Republica newspaper column what had been “said in Church circles for at least a month” – Miranda had been dismissed by the pope for accusations of sexually abusing children. “No official information [from the Church] is available,” however, it is “essential to confirm or disprove what is an open secret.” If true, he wrote, he called for “immediate action by the attorney general.”

Later on Sept. 19, a local bishop publicly stated that “Miranda has not only been removed [for pedophilia], but laicized. He is no longer a priest.” The bishop said this had not yet been officially communicated by the Vatican.

The next day, Reuters reported that an unnamed “Church official confirmed that Miranda, 53, had resigned but declined to say why.” The attorney general's office said that it was investigating Miranda and would announce its actions soon. According to an Opus Dei statement, Miranda “denies any crime related to minors.”

Various prelates followed up by confirming the “resignation” of Miranda, or the “removal” of Miranda. The spokesman for the Archdiocese of Ayacucho, said Miranda “departed in July" but did not specify the reason.

On Sept. 22, La Republica’s correspondent in Ayacucho noted that the archbishop of the archdiocese and president of Peru’s bishops’ conference, Salvador Pineiro, had announced to other Peruvian hierarchs that Miranda was dismissed and laicized on Aug. 15 based on evidence and testimony of the victim(s) and their families. The government prosecutor, Garry Chavez, questioned why, having heard the case, the national Church hierarchy had not contacted the civil authority.

The same day, the Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani of Lima “minimized” the accusations of child sex abuse against Miranda and blamed the scandal on the media. Cipriani met with Pope Francis on Sept. 24 “for more than an hour” but said that Miranda was not discussed.

Also on Sept. 24, the prosecutor, Chavez, told La Republica that he asked the archbishops of Ayacucho and Lima and the papal nuncio – since the allegations were made directly to the Vatican - for copies of the records upon which the pope based his decision to remove Miranda. According to Chavez, Miranda left the second week in August and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Chavez asked the attorney general’s office, which deals with international crimes, to receive the information requested from the nuncio through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He said he hopes there will be a quick response from the Vatican.

On Sept. 26, Reuters reported that Chavez told them Church officials based in Peru and the Vatican had not yet responded to several requests for details about the case. “What we are going to do now is reiterate to them that the law requires their cooperation,” Chavez said. The archbishop of Ayacucho, Salvador Pineiro, who supervised Miranda for two years, said he supports the investigation and hopes it will reveal the truth. He said all he knows about the case is that on July 5 he was notified by Pope Francis that Miranda was being dismissed for “sins against the sixth commandment [Thou shalt not commit adultery] in a process subject to pontifical secret.” (The “sixth commandment” is a euphemism used by Catholic churchmen for any sexual transgression from masturbation to rape.)

However, the online magazine, CARETAS, reported that the accusation against Miranda was for “improper touching” of a 14-year-old altar boy in June 2012 in the confessional. According to the magazine, the victim lodged a formal complaint with the archbishop of Ayacucho’s office. It appears the complaint went unnoticed or ignored for some time. Also, CARETASreported that Chavez believes there is another complaint against Miranda by a 15-year-old.

Pineiro denied this and said he never received any complaints against Miranda. “That’s a lie. Of course I would have investigated. I am not complicit,” the archbishop protested.

Meanwhile, Miranda’s whereabouts still remain unknown.

While Pope Francis could be praised for dismissing these prelates, the fact that the information he received was credible enough for him to take action also means that he should have immediately alerted the civil authorities so that, if warranted, an arrest could be made or at least an investigation begun as soon as possible. Also, Pope Francis should have made the allegations public so that any other victims would be encouraged to contact a law enforcement agency perhaps making the investigation easier, apprehension quicker or prosecution more certain. Additionally, if made public, people could avoid contact with the accused. The group, Survivors’ Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), defines failure to take these steps as a “cover up.”

How many children have been abused or are in danger until both men are apprehended? Did Wesolowski and Miranda use the time provided by the pope’s silence to escape arrest? At what point should Francis make an apology and offer aid to the victims?

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio did not have a good record regarding child sex abuse before he became pope.

Fr. Julio Cesar Grassi was well known for his work as president of the Fundacion Felices los Niños (the Happy Children Foundation) which he founded in 1993 to rescue street children.

Grassi received donations from fund-raising drives held on numerous television programs. He “won praise from Argentine politicians and his superior, Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio.” (Bergoglio was elevated to archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and elevated to cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II.)

The first legal complaint against the priest was filed anonymously in Juvenile Court in Nov. 2000 accusing Grassi of corrupting minors. Nothing was done until an investigative news program alleged that Grassi abused five boys aged 11 to 17. Two of the alleged victims, using the pseudonyms “Gabriel” and “Ezekiel,” stated that they had been abused by Grassi while in the Happy Children Foundation.

In Oct. 2002, Grassi was arrested and charged with 17 counts of abusing three boys who were 9, 13, and 17 when the alleged incidents occurred. The priest accused those who made complaints of extortion. Grassi was held 28 days and released.

One victim’s attorney, Juan Pablo Gallego, said the harm done by the priest was “irreversible.” “This man was in charge of abandoned kids with family problems,” stated Gallego.

The executive committee of the Argentine bishops’ conference issued a statement denouncing a “campaign” intended to “blur the image” of the Catholic Church and “cause society to lose its trust” in the institution.” The Executive Committee was headed by Archbishop Karlic and his first and second vice-presidents, Msgr. Miras and Cardinal Bergoglio.

Cardinal Bergoglio refused to meet with “Gabriel” in Nov. 2003.

In one of Argentina’s most egregious abuse cases, another priest in the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires was assigned to work with children even when Church leaders knew of allegations against him.
After local parishioners accused Fr. Mario Napoleon Sasso of molesting children in a poor, rural province of eastern Argentina in the early 1990s, he was sent to a private rehabilitation center for wayward clergy. He was then reassigned to work in a soup kitchen for poor children in a town outside the capital. There, he went on to sexually abuse girls as young as 3.
The attorney for the victims said that in 2006 the victims’ families asked to see Bergoglio but they never received a response.
Sasso was convicted in 2007 and sentenced to 17 years in prison. He has since been released on parole.
After years of legal delays, Grassi’s trial began in August 2008. Prosecutors sought 30 years in prison. For nine months, the trial was held behind closed doors. Only the verdict was read to the public on June 10, 2009. The Criminal Court found Grassi guilty of two acts of aggravated sexual assault and corruption of minors and sentenced him to 15 years in prison. He was allowed to remain free during his appeal but the judges imposed a number of restrictions.

On June 20, 2009, 49 priests and 50 laypeople criticized the “silence of ecclesial leaders before this case and others.” The signers said, “We see that other bishops’ conferences like Colombia’s have spoken up in similar cases, and we do not understand your silence, that has the appearance of ‘hushing up’ and ‘tolerance.’”

In a 2009 interview, Grassi claimed that Bergoglio “never let go of my hand….Investigative reports at the time indicate that Bergoglio not only continued protecting Grassi through the Church but was also his confessor – one of the few who came to talk to him.”

The case of Fr. Grassi has been particularly troublesome to children’s advocates in Argentina because “Bergoglio was widely viewed as close to the young priest. [He] was not expelled from the priesthood after the guilty verdict. Instead, Church officials led by Bergoglio commissioned a lengthy private report arguing that Grassi was innocent.”

The report, written by Marcelo Sancinetti, a criminal lawyer, was two volumes exceeding 1000 pages. He argued that a member of the clergy should not necessarily comply with secular court decisions. “He suggests that allegation of sex abuse by Grassi are false and comparable to the witch trials of the Middle Ages.” A copy was given to each judge involved in hearing Grassi’s appeal and was “submitted as part of the legal appeal…Prosecutors say the document has helped Grassi avoid jail time.”

For the next four years, Grassi was allowed to continue living across the street from the foundation. Grassi “violated the conditions for his freedom by calling one of the youngsters whose testimony led to his conviction a ‘liar.’”

On May 8, 2013, the victim known as “Gabriel” and his attorney, Juan Pablo Gallego, went to the Vatican embassy in Buenos Aires to hand deliver a letter addressed to Pope Francis.The letter read, in part, “I would be grateful if you would apply the so-called zero tolerance [as announced by the Vatican towards pedophile priests] for the privileged Grassi sentenced for horrific crimes from which I have suffered and still suffer. Have him reduced to the lay state and issue a clear public sign of respect for the independence of the Argentine judicial system….I beg your compassion and help me regain my faith.”

While the attorney and his client were at the nunciature, “a number of parcels, letters and papers” addressed to the pope were received. After an employee read “Gabriel’s” letter and consulted with someone inside, they were told the letter would not be accepted and they werethreatened with a call to the police.

On Sept. 2, the chief justice of the Argentine Supreme Court of Buenos Aires, Héctor Negri,one of the judges who would decide Grassi’s appeal, met in private with Pope Francis. Negri stated that the Grassi case was not discussed, but should a prominent jurist have considered the meeting unseemly just a couple of weeks before a decision was to be handed down on Grassi?

On Sept. 18, Grassi’s conviction for two cases of aggravated sexual abuse and a third for corruption of minors and sentence of 15 years imprisonment was upheld. Other plaintiffs are pushing for the trial against Grassi to continue, saying he still needs to answer to accusations that he abused two other youths. Plaintiffs’ attorney Gallego said the victims are currently between 27 and 28 years old and live “in humble conditions.”

Grassi called the court’s decision “a cross one must know how to bear.” The priest criticized the prosecutor for “wanting to deceive society” and the media for waging a campaign against him.

In a press statement, Bishop Marcelo Cuenca said that Grassi was "totally innocent” and heblamed the media for Grassi’s conviction.

Sergio Piris, an attorney for another of Grassi’s victims, said the priest always felt comfortable because he was protected by the Church. Piris said his client “was never able to close this black chapter on his life” and that “he was still suffering while the abuser was free and spoke on television.” Cuenca’s statement shows that the Church continues to protect him, Piris stated. "

Considering that Grassi resists detention by “spurious means,” provides a “bizarre spectacle” for the press, and “because he does not stop hurting himself, the Catholic Church, justice and, above all, the victims,” Gallego asked Pope Francis to remove the priest from the Catholic Church.

Bishop Luis Guillermo Eichhorn had defended Grassi as “again acquitted on fifteen charges and convicted on two," in an earlier statement. But on Sept. 25, the day after Grassi was finally ordered to prison, Eichhorn said that Grassi could no longer say mass in public but could continue doing so in private “pending final resolution of this situation” and that he would be investigated by the Vatican. To which one columnist replied: "This arrangement is the minimum that can be adopted and seems destined to protect the priest and try to lessen the damage to the corporate image of the Church which has been seriously harmed by inaction in many cases of pedophilia tested in various parts of the world."

….Bergoglio did not offer personal apologies or financial restitution, even in cases in which the crimes were denounced by other members of the Church and the offending priests were sent to jail.
There is no evidence that Bergoglio played a role in covering up abuse cases. Several prominent rights groups in Argentina say…that Bergoglio’s resolve strengthened as new cases of molestation emerged in the archdiocese and that he eventually instructed bishops to immediately report all abuse allegations to police.
But during most of the 14 years that Bergoglio served as archbishop of Buenos Aires, rights advocates say, he did not take decisive action to protect children or act swiftly when molestation charges surfaced.
“He has been totally silent,” said Ernesto Moreau, a member of Argentina’s U.N.-affiliated Permanent Assembly for Human Rights and a lawyer who has represented victims in a clergy sexual-abuse case. Victims asked to meet with Bergoglio but were turned down, Moreau said. “In that regard, Bergoglio was no different from most of the other bishops in Argentina, or the Vatican itself.”

As pope, Francis has also been silent regarding sexual assaults against children except for acknowledging during an in-flight interview while returning from Brazil that this was a crime.

In April, the Vatican Information Service reported that “the Holy Father recommended that the Congregation [for the Doctrine of the Faith or CDF] continue along the lines set by Benedict XVI.” The press office paraphrased a private conversation between Pope Francis and Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller, prefect of the CDF, yet it has been universally misreported to the present day as a direct quote of a public statement that Francis told Muller to “act decisively against sexual abuse.”

Neither did the pope make any public statement when he made a new law for the employees of the Vatican City State and the Holy See (the name of the worldwide Church government) effective on July 11. The decree “declared sexual violence, prostitution and possession of child pornography as crimes against children can be punished by up to 12 years in prison.”

Perhaps this was not as widely reported because, a week earlier, the Vatican received a list of requests for information from the U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child which will evaluate in early 2014 the Holy See's implementation of the treaty it signed with U.N. protecting children.

One of the requests was “...please clarify the status of the Convention in the Vatican City State and provide information on the measures taken to incorporate its principles and provisions in the domestic legal system of the Vatican City State.”
Another was:

For all these cases [of sexual violence against children committed by members of the clergy, brothers and nuns in numerous countries around the world reported to the Holy See], please provide detailed information on the measures in place to ensure that no member of the clergy currently accused of sexual abuse be allowed to remain in contact with children as well as the specific cases where immediate measures were taken to prevent them from being in continued contact with children as well as the cases where priests were transferred to other parishes or to other States where they continued to have access to and abuse children.
No doubt, the world media will neglect to hold Pope Francis accountable for his failure to comply with the U.N. treaty. Just like, except for victims’ advocates, not one single reporter, journalist or commentator that I am aware of noted that Francis failed to mention the subject of child sex abuse in the 12,000-word interview published on Sept. 22.

Francis first action as pope was to name eight cardinals who would advise him on governance of the Church. He showed a callous disregard for survivors of sexual assaults by selecting two cardinals with terrible reputations regarding child sex abuse.

The Australian Cardinal George Pell, when asked what he thought was the root cause of the sex-abuse scandals, Pell replied, “it’s obviously connected with the problem of homosexuality.”

In Australia, the number of reports of clergy child sex abuse became so egregious that the state of Victoria (capital Melbourne) initiated a parliament inquiry, the state of New South Wales (capital Sydney) is investigating complaints that the Catholic Church hampered police investigations, and former Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced the formation of a Royal Commission to study child sex abuse by religious and non-government bodies.

Pell’s response was to complain about a “'persistent press campaign’ and ‘general smears that we are covering up and moving people around,’ and then capped it off with the claim that abuse by Catholic priests had been singled out and exaggerated.”

“Catholic clergy commit six times as much abuse as those in the rest of the Churches combined, ‘and that's a conservative figure,’” Patrick Parkinson, a Sydney University law professor, told the Victoria inquiry on May 30, 2013. Of thousands of offences, not a single crime was reported by a Church official to the police, Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Graham Ashton testified.

On May 24, 2013, Pell appeared as the final witness in the parliamentary inquiry. Like other prelates, Pell made an apology which came across as insincere. "My response to Cardinal Pell's evidence, being as fair as I can, is that it was to me a rather cynical exercise in damage control," Dr. Bryan Keon-Cohen QC, president of community lobby group COIN (Commission of Inquiry Now) said. “He offered a lot of words, offered apologies, expressed remorse, but to me it lacked conviction,” according to Keon-Cohen.

During Pell’s testimony, “Many of his responses about his personal empathy for victims weremet with laughter and scoffs from the public gallery, which included victims and victims' advocates.” Anthony Foster, father of two young daughters repeatedly raped by a priest, said Pell showed a “sociopathic lack of empathy typifying the attitude and response of the Catholic hierarchy.” Ian Lawther, whose son was sexually abused by a priest, described Pell's apology as "full of criminal clichés….It was a kick to the groin of every Australian Catholic, maybe even Christian."

Another of Pope Francis' "gang of eight" is Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa, the retired archbishop of Santiago, who made headlines in Chile for protecting Fr. Fernando Karamina, a spiritual leader among Santiago’s most influential families.

Church officials were warned as early as 1984 about Karadima’s “improper conduct.” The first known reports of abuse by Karadima reached Errázuriz in mid-2003. In 2006, a priest appointed by Errázuriz to investigate the claims made his report to the cardinal, stating that he believed “the accusers to be credible.” Errázuriz wrote in a public letter that he did nothing because he thought the allegations were beyond the statute of limitations.

In April 2010, a civil criminal complaint was filed against Karadima for child sex abuse by four men who were once his devoted followers. The claims were dismissed by a court ruling stating there was not enough evidence to charge him. One of the claimants protested, "We would have liked to appeal, but with defense attorneys like his, who have the Appeals and Supreme Court eating out of their hands, and a number of powerful people who continue to protect Karadima, we knew it would be an uphill battle that we were likely to lose."

In January 2011, a judge ordered that Karadima be interrogated. According to court testimony, Church officials, including Errázuriz, tried to shame accusers into dropping claims, refused to meet with them or failed to carry out formal investigations for years.

The criminal case against Karadima was dismissed in November 2011 because the statute of limitations had expired but the court also determined that the allegations were “truthful and reliable.” The Vatican “sanctioned” Karadima by ordering him to a life of “penitence and prayer,” but he remains a priest in good standing.

Karadima is the "worst scandal" of the Chilean Catholic Church, Chilean political analyst Ascanio Cavallo, Dean of the Journalism School of the Adolfo Ibáñez University, stated. "Power is the true point of the case. The abuses were not possible without a network of political, social and religious power working for 50 years,” said Cavallo.

When Pope Francis appointed Errázuriz as one of his closest advisers, one of the claimants who had accused the cardinal of covering up Karadima’s crimes called it “a shame and a disgrace.”

On Sept. 15, Errázuriz, referring to the compensation requested by Karadima’s victims from the Archdiocese of Santiago for failing to protect them or to investigate their accusations, said they should be asking for compensation from Karadima. Errázuriz denied that the archdiocese had any responsibility for their “tremendous pain.”

On Sept. 21, Pope Francis reconfirmed Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith even though the archbishop has followed none of the instructions reportedly given him by the pope as described by the Vatican Information Servicein April. Müller was told he must promote measures for the protection of minors, offer assistance to those who have suffered abuse, carry out due proceedings against the guilty and help formulate and implement the necessary directives in this area “that is so important for the Church's witness and credibility.” The press release had ended with “The Holy Father assured that victims of abuse are present in a particular way in his prayers for those who are suffering.”

Poland indicts priest on 2 counts of pedophilia in Dominican Republic

Warsaw.- The Warsaw Office of the Prosecutor on Tuesday indicted Polish priest Wojciech Gil on four counts of pedophilia and against the sexual freedom of children, two of them in Poland in 2006, before his departure to head a town parish in the Dominican Republic, EFE reports.
After Gil’s arraignment which lasted one and-a-half hours, Office of the Prosecutor spokesman Przemyslaw Nowak said the defendant pleaded not guilty and refused to answer most of the questions by prosecutors.
Nowak confirmed that a judge has been asked to extend Gil’s pretrial detention.
He said prosecutors have interviewed dozens of witnesses over the past months and collected evidence, in addition to documents submitted by Dominican counterparts.

Przemyslaw Nowak, spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw, has confirmed that “several charges” will be brought against Father Wojciech G. (full name withheld under Polish privacy laws), following the priest's detainment on Monday near Krakow.
Nowak also revealed that the house in which Father Wojciech G. had been residing in recent months has been searched.
However, Nowak said that he was not at liberty to discuss the details.
Although authorities in the Dominican Republic have already formally charged the priest, Poland has no extradition treaty with the Caribbean country at present, and it is expected that the priest will be tried in Poland.

Santo Domingo.- Justice minister Francisco Domínguez on Monday said he’s pleased with the arrest of Polish priest Wojciech Gil (Padre Alberto), and vowed to do all that’s needed to get the maximum sentence for the prelate’s alleged abuse of seven boys in the Dominican Republic.
Poland police announced Gil’s arrest at his family home in a village near Krakow Monday, on a warrant issued by the Poland authorities, and is expected to be taken to Warsaw for questioning and arraignment Tuesday.
According to Poland’s laws, the priest faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted.
No borders
Dominguez said upon hearing the news through the media, the Justice Ministry contacted its Poland counterpart to learn of all the details on the priest’s arrest.

(Reuters) - Polish prosecutors have charged a Catholic priest with four counts of sex abuse against children in his native Poland and in the Dominican Republic, where he was working in a rural parish, the prosecutor's office said on Tuesday.
The priest worked in the Dominican Republic until May last year. He left the parish and was suspended by his religious order after local residents accused him of molesting altar boys, church officials said. He is now in detention in Poland.
"Two of the charges concern acts that took place in the Dominican Republic, to the harm of citizens of the Dominican Republic, and two concern acts that took place in Poland and concern Polish citizens," the prosecutor's spokesman, Przemyslaw Nowak, told a news conference.
Another Polish cleric working in the Dominican Republic, Vatican nuncio (ambassador) Archbishop Josef Wesolowski, was recalled last September by the Vatican and is being investigated there on child sexual abuse charges.
His whereabouts are not known.
Prosecutors say the priest who has been charged denies the accusations. If convicted, he could face 12 years in prison.

Dominican Today published a report by TheNews.pl, which said that a Polish priest has been arrested on Monday in Poland for allegations of sexual abuse. Polish priest Wojciech Gil, or Padre Alberto to his parishioners Juncalito, a town in the Dominican Republic, reportedly abused several boys sexually. Przemyslaw Nowak, a spokesman for the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office, confirmed the priest's arrest. The priest's full name was withheld under the privacy laws of Poland according to the report.
Since late September of last year, Padre Alberto was under investigation by authorities in connection to several sexual abuse allegations. In the Dominican Republic, Padre Alberto has been formally charged with molesting several local boys in Juncalito while keeping his post as head of the parish. Aside from the testimonies provided by his alleged victims and authorities, officials in the Carribean country confirmed that Padre Alberto had child pornography material on his computer. He has since then denied the accusations filed against him, TheNews.pl said in its report.
The Polish news site said that Padre Alberto's case was part of a broad investigation into Pope Francis envoy Jozef Wesolowski, who is also a Polish prelate and was charged with sexually abusing minors. After his secret was outed by the Holy See, the Vatican pledged to conduct a investigation regarding the allegations filed against Wesolowski. The Vatican has already relieved Wesolowski of his duties as an ambassador of the Church to the Dominican Republic due to the investigation.

Wojciech G flatly denied any wrongdoing in an October 2013 interview with Polish media, suggesting he was set up by local drug gangs.

Speaking on Skype from Krakow, the journalist said he and other colleagues had traveled to the mountain town of Juncalito, northern Santiago province, and other places where the prelate allegedly committed the abuses. “Gil claimed that the charges against him were a plot by drug traffickers in the region but when I was in Juncalito, no one mentioned this, and the priest mentioned this only after his arrest.”
Wekly, speaking on CDN channel 37, added that Gil is expected to be interrogated in the Polish capital of Warsaw.

Stupid Catholic women and nuns should learn from the real Mary the Mother of Jesus brought Him to the synagogues and the Temple of Solomon when he was a boy and all He did was questioning the powers of the Pharisees High Priests – that’s in the fifth Joyful mystery of the Rosary. Then Jesus did the unthinkable, he cursed the Temple of Solomon (prescribed in detail by His Father in the Bible) to the ground – except perhaps for the jewels or wealth that King Solomon accumulated and hoarded in the Temple brought by kings and queens – this would be tantamount to the Vatican Bank and secret Vatican Swiss Banks because the Vatican owns Switzerland, hence the Swiss Guard Army that train all Swiss men to be obedient to the Pope, the monarch of Switzerland.

Jesus’ Mother followed His curse on the Temple of Solomon and all its wealth 2,000 years later. In the Third Secret of Fatima when she appeared to Sr. Lucy and the other two young children, she showed them an image of Hell where there are thousands of pedophile priests burning because of their crimes against children and she predicted that the Vatican will also be destroyed like the Temple of Solomon - that not one pillar at St. Peter’s Square will be left standing -- because Her Son is not part of the Evil Vatican. After Joseph Ratzinger publicly announced his plans to retire, quite a few people who are aware of this website or the @Fire_the_PopeTwitter account remarked how I got my wish or, jokingly, how my website may have led to the first resignation of a pope in 600 years.

Yes, I’ve had Ratzinger’s picture prominently displayed on this site and, given his long record both as the pope and as the one person responsible for handling all sex-crime cases in the Church, I strongly believed him to be incompetent at best.

However, FireThePope doesn’t just mean fire Joseph Ratzinger. FireThePope isn’t a cause to bring down one man. FireThePope is an effort to expose the entire Roman Catholic Church, as is, as fraudulent and there is no better way to do that than to start at the top.

Not your Father’s church.

The Roman Catholic Church sets itself apart from all other religions, including Christian denominations, by claiming its head, the pope, is the successor of Peter and that Jesus anointed Peter to be the head of his church. The Church points to Matthew 16:13-20 to support this claim. Catholics conclude the Roman Catholic Church is the “one true church” of Jesus Christ and all other Protestant or non-Roman orthodox churches are inferior to it.

Roman Catholics call their church “the bride of Christ” and “Holy Mother Church”. These nicknames market the idea that Roman Catholicism dates back to the days of Jesus Christ and it – or “She”, as they say – is the very foundation of Christianity and all other religions are mere offshoots or sequels to Roman Catholicism.

Ultimately, Roman Catholicism rests solely on the supremacy of Peter and the apostles. Without the supremacy of Peter, there would be no pope. Without the supremacy of the apostles, there would be no priesthood as the Roman Church defines it. Without the superhuman powers of Catholic priests, bye-bye sacraments, indulgences, and the entire institution.

Today, let’s focus on the papacy. Following are ten reasons why there should never be another pope and, if there is, he should be completely ignored by the Catholic laity, the media, politicians, and the public at large.

Because the Vatican bases its very existence on a scene from the New Testament, it must also accept other verses of the NT in order to be consistent. Either the NT should be accepted as true, non-fictional accounts or not. Either those accounts must be taken literally or not. But, one cannot say this is a source of truth, inspired by the Holy Spirit and then pick and choose which passages the Church wants to follow or not.

1. The church of Jesus Christ in the bible was not a physical empire. Matthew 24:1-2 - ”Jesus left the temple precincts then, and his disciples came up and pointed out to him the buildings of the temple area. His comment was: ‘Do you see all these buildings? I assure you, not one stone will be left on another – it will all be torn down.’” 1 Corinthians 3:16 – “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the spirit of God dwells in you?” Also, Peter 2:5-9 – “Be yourselves as living stones built into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Jesus preached in homes and on hillsides, not in buildings. He only went in to temples to draw people out of them or to scold the church leaders. The word catholic, found in the bible with a lower-case c, means universal. In the first century, the wordchurch (also lower-case c) meant a society of men, women, and children who are spiritually – not necessarily physically – united to serve God. According to the NT, Jesus established the catholic church – a universal society of believers who would offer spiritualsacrifices. I explain below who really instituted the Roman Catholic Church, which requires material (pagan) sacrifices.

2. The church of Jesus Christ was not built upon one man. The idea that the church of Jesus was built upon one man is preposterous. Yet, that is what the Roman Church claims. Its only foundation is the notion that Peter was chosen by Jesus to be the first pope and that all popes are Peter’s successors, chosen by the Holy Spirit and infallible in all of their declarations. Roman Catholicism teaches that the pope, acting on behalf of the Church (notice the capital C indicating the Corporation) has the power and a duty to act as a mediator between the Creator and his creatures. It has been a long-held tradition that the Vatican, the Magisterium, and the clergy would interpret the bible for the laity. However, 1 Corinthians 3:11 reads, “For other foundation no one can lay, but that which has been laid, which is Jesus Christ”. According to scripture, Jesus, not Peter, is the foundation of the Christian church. Jesus is also the sole mediator, so says 1 Timothy 2:5: ”And the truth is this: ‘God is one. One also is the mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, and who gave himself ransom for all.” According to the New Testament where Catholics turn to justify the existence of their Church, there is only one mediator between God and the people and that is Jesus Christ, not Peter and not Joseph Ratzinger.

3. The church of Jesus Christ in the bible did not have a pope.The word pope is not in the bible, where the Roman Church points to as justification for itself. The early church described in the New Testament speaks of bishops who were overseers or local supervisors of the effort to spread Christianity. They were not rulers over the people. No one bishop had authority over any other. No one bishop was the head of the effort. There was a bishop in many major cities, including one in Rome. It so happened that certain Roman emperors (namely Constantine and Charlemagne) elevated the position and authority of the bishop of Rome, specifically, because they had the power to do so and because it was convenient as Rome was the seat of power. Emperors appointed bishops and abbots and usually appointed members of aristocratic families. The idea of a pope – one bishop over all others – was a corrupt power grab by murderous dictators and had nothing to do with Jesus Christ or anything in the bible.

4. The Peter of the throne was not the apostle but an impostor. Remember, the apostle Peter originally went by the name of Simon. Then, he was referred to as Simon Peter. Jesus named him Peter at the rock because the name Peter – or Petros (Greek) means rock. This Peter was from Cyprus, according to the bible. But, there is another Simon in the bible, this one from Samaria and he was a troublemaker. Locals called him Simon the

If there was a pope on a throne in the days of the early church, it was not Peter the Apostle but Simon the Magician. Simon sat on a throne; Peter never did. Simon claimed to be God; Peter never did. Simon claimed to have supernatural powers; Peter never did. Simon Magnus even started going by the name Peter in order to confuse people. They both had the same name, they both died in the same year – 67 A.D., and they both had spent time in Rome. The proof that the Simon of Samaria, not Cyprus, sat on the throne in Rome is the documentation that Magnus stayed in Rome for many years at a time while the apostle came and went quite often.

5. The apostle Peter never considered himself God or Jesus Christ. Again, the idea of the papacy rests on the supremacy of Peter. The Roman Church claims the pope is “Christ’s (sole) representative on earth”. The Peter whom the popes are supposed to have succeeded was married with at least one child – a daughter. He never sat on a throne and he never claimed to have magic powers or to be infallible. He never claimed to be better or more important than the other apostles or early leaders of the Christian church. He never dressed in fancy clothes, he never wore a ring to be kissed, and he never insisted on the red carpet treatment. Acts 10:25-27: “As Peter entered, Cornelius went to meet him, dropped to his knees before him and bowed low. Peter said, ‘Get up! I am only a man myself.’” When Nero sentenced Peter to death by crucifixion, Peter insisted on hanging on the cross upside down because he was unworthy to die as Jesus died. Peter the apostle, claimed by the Church as the first pope was never a pope and his philosophy and practices, according to the New Testament, were a far contrast to those of the papacy no matter who is holding the title.

6. The Roman Catholic Church was not established until the 4th Century. Roman Catholics claim Peter of the bible was the first pope and that there is an unbroken line of popes stretching from biblical times to present-day. This claim is nothing but a re-writing of history. The Church needs that lineage in order to justify itself and the papacy yet it does not have the facts on its side so they have to create a new reality. What the Church

has done is go back and list anyone who was a bishop of Rome as a pope. The actual papacy didn’t begin until the Roman Catholic Church began and that wasn’t until the 4th Century with Pope Constantine I – the emperor – who ruled from the “chair of St. Peter” from 306-337. Constantine came to the rescue of Christians who were being persecuted by Emperor Diocletian. It’s not that he was overcome by compassion but realized he could take political advantage from the growing number of Christians. This ties the pagan Roman Empire to the Catholic Church whose members also worship objects and offer material sacrifices.

7. The papacy was on life support as recently as 1870. In the mid-19th Century, there was an effort to unify Italy which was split in two by the Papal States governed by the pope, then Pope Pius IX (the one who dreamed up Immaculate Conception). Victor Emmanuel II, the new King of Italy, had seized all of the Church-controlled territory except a small segment of Rome. Napoleon, who had previously been an ally of Emmanuel, protected the pope and by having some of his troops stand guard at the Vatican. When the Franco-Prussia War intensified, Napoleon pulled his troops out of Rome, leaving the pope defenseless. The Italian troops moved in and the pope lost all of his temporal (civil) power minus rule over the tiny territory of the Vatican. Emmanuel allowed the pope to keep the Vatican and freed him from Italian rule but the pope was defiant. Pius IX refused to recognize Emmanuel’s new kingdom and he voluntarily kept himself a prisoner of the Vatican. He cried anti-Catholic bias until support and donations poured in for him, including from Catholics in America. The empire of the Roman Church was all but lost in 1870. It took more deception to keep it alive.

8. The papacy was corruptly propped back up by a fascist dictator. In the 1920′s, the Italian government wished to settle its differences with the Church. At the time, the Prime Minister of Italy was Benito Mussolini.

He conspired with the Vatican to shut out populist factions in the country in order to amass more power and control for himself. The Vatican silenced priests who favored a more democratic government. In return, Mussolini gifted the Church by officially recognizing the Vatican as an independent and sovereign city-state. Within the borders of Italy, popes would receive diplomatic immunity and the Church would receive financial reparations for its loss of the Papal States. Also, Roman Catholicism would be the one state religion in Italy. These agreements were called the Lateran Pacts and they are what revived the much weakened papacy. Mussolini would go on to become one of history’s most brutal dictators. Today, Vatican City, the whole 0.2 square miles of it, is recognized by the United Nations as a sovereign city-state of which the pope is head.

9. The pope is an absolute monarch at a time when most educated and reasonable human beings believe in freedom, democracy, and accountability. In 2011, the world witnessed what is now referred to as The Arab Spring. Ordinary people protested – many to their deaths – for freedom, respect, and democratic elections. Many citizens of some nations in the Middle East had been oppressed for generations and they finally decided it was time to take a stand against tyranny. It has been said there is a natural hunger to live freely, no matter what part of the world one lives. The pope is an absolute monarch, only one of a few that still exist and certainly the most powerful. There’s an elephant quietly sitting in the nave that everyone on all sides of the clergy sex abuse crisis have been diligently ignoring, even the victims themselves. No clergy or even would-be reformers have really remarked on it yet, although it should be more obvious with each and every sad story. More importantly, it is a troubling issue that touches on the very heart and soul of Catholicism.

The monstrous truth is simply this: what the clergy sex abuse crisis clearly demonstrates is that the sacramental system has failed.

This is not just a case of hierarchical reneging of responsibility.There’s more to this than some bad apples. This is nothing that a few reforms can fix, some screening of seminarians or more pastoral responses by bishops. It is nothing less than a fundamental challenge to the entire Catholic Church, and it shows that the spiritual principles the whole structure is supposedly based on simply do not work.

Think about it. The offenders here are Roman Catholic priests, highly trained men. But unlike other professionals, these men are supposedly set apart and dedicated to lives of the spirit. They claim to have the power to forgive sins and make God appear.

They not only administer the sacraments to others, but also receive them themselves daily. That means, among other things, frequent confession to other priests. Moreover, many of these men belong to religious orders or are otherwise under close spiritual direction. They are supposed to confide everything to their confessors and superiors and to obey them unquestioningly.

So what went wrong? When an abusive priest goes to confession, does he start, “Bless me, father, for I have sinned: I buggered an altar boy three times this week”? And does the confessor tell him to say 3 Our Fathers and 4 Hail Marys and not to do it again?

According to their own theory, confessors have the power to forgive sins, but also to refuse to do so if sorrow is insufficient. Moreover, they are to appoint penances – if they wish, they can require satisfaction or significant signs of reform from the penitent before absolution. Some sins – such as solicitation for sex in the confessional – are even deemed so serious that only higher prelates, sometimes only the Pope or his appointed delegate can forgive them.

Yet the abusers continue to abuse. So are the sexually active priestslying to their confessors? This would mean that not only do the perpetrating priests remain in a state of mortal sin and are automatically excommunicated, they perform the sacraments in that state which is itself a grave sacrilege.

Or, even worse, are all the abusive priests linked? Do they only go to confession to like-minded perps who will understand? Is there then an organized network of sexually perpetrating priests, all busily enabling each other? This adds collusion and conspiracy to the sinand would indicate that the very structure itself is rotten to the core.

The evidence available suggests that perhaps both scenarios are true to varying degrees in different situations. Either way, however, the result is much the same.

The sacraments are meant to unite believers with Christ. Not just to remove the accumulations of sin like the weekly laundry, but togradually improve the recipient. They are intended to sanctify and uplift the faithful, increase devotion to God, charity to fellow humans, and moral stamina in the face of evil.

If the sacraments actually worked like this, wouldn’t we hear ennobling stories of clerical reform, of some molester inspired to truly repent and devote himself to the cause? But rather, the stories are depressingly the same, of priests caught time and again, transferred, treated, and now finally, laicized often against their will, with no regret or even acknowledgement of their evil.

What this means, each person must decide in their own conscience. But perhaps the fall off in confessions over the years itself tells the story. Why should anyone, lay or not, risk a ritual that seems so impotent in promoting reform and may, instead of granting grace, actually expose them to greater human wickedness?
