QADIYA, Iraq — In the moments before he raped the 12-year-old girl, the Islamic State fighter took the time to explain that what he was about to do was not a sin. Because the preteen girl practiced a religion other than Islam, the Quran not only gave him the right to rape her — it condoned and encouraged it, he insisted.
He bound her hands and gagged her. Then he knelt beside the bed and prostrated himself in prayer before getting on top of her.
When it was over, he knelt to pray again, bookending the rape with acts of religious devotion.
“I kept telling him it hurts — please stop,” said the girl, whose body is so small an adult could circle her waist with two hands. “He told me that according to Islam he is allowed to rape an unbeliever. He said that by raping me, he is drawing closer to God,” she said in an interview alongside her family in a refugee camp here, to which she escaped after 11 months of captivity.

I’ve been reading as deeply as I can on the origins and characteristics of ISIS, trying to come to grips with its emergence and how it might be eradicated. But the truth is that each time we have tried a largely military approach to an Islamic extremist group, we’ve succeeded in mestastizing the cancer and ensuring its re-emergence in an even more virulent form. A military component will be essential, but it will not be sufficient.
At the very least, the existence of ISIS reminds us again that true evil does exist in the world. The ideology of the group is at least as demented and cruel as that of National Socialism under Adolph Hitler, and if given the backing of a powerful state military would be as equally dangerous. Of course, the paradox is that if it relied upon the backing of a powerful state military, it would also be a lot easier to defeat. Instead it lives as almost a virus in the info-sphere, capable of quickly evolving into new forms to match whatever new conditions it encounters.
If you haven’t read this story in today’s New York Times about the systemic use of rape as a recruiting tool and even religious rite by ISIS, I urge you to do so, with the caveat that it is deeply unsettling:

CHILD abuse victims reacted with anger yesterday at the outcome of a long-running inquiry into the Catholic Church in Scotland’s handling of the scandal, describing it as “a joke” and “total bull****”.
Survivors’ groups insisted the eight recommendations laid down in the McLellan Commission report published yesterday was “nothing but a face-saving exercise to restore the damaged reputation of the Catholic Church”, offering nothing to help victims rebuild their broken lives.
A commission led by the Very Rev Andrew McLellan demanded that the Scottish Catholic Church make an “unmistakeable and unequivocal” apology to survivors of abuse, and insisted justice must be done and be seen to be done.
Survivors said Church leader Archbishop Tartaglia’s “profound apology” to abuse victims, which followed the publication of the report, was “16-years too late” and “meaningless”.
McLellan, former moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and one-time chief inspector of prisons, demanded support for survivors of abuse to be an “absolute priority”.

Just over a year ago, ISIS began their carefully calculated capture of the Yazidi people. Yazidi polytheism was the core reason that ISIS targeted them in August of 2014. After surrounding them on top of Mount Sinjar, they killed the men and captured the women. In the October issue of ISIS’s Dabiq journal, they admitted that it was planned and that their research found that the enslavement of Yazidi women was “justified.” This is consistent with research by Human Rights Watch., which agrees that the sex trade of minorities has been systematic and organized.
The fate of the Yazidi women hasn’t been the main topic of conversation, but a question remains: Could Muslim, Christian, and Jewish women be next?

One year on from the summit to end sexual violence in conflict, convened by Angelina Jolie and William Hague in London, the self-proclaimed Islamic State has developed a complex bureaucracy of sex slavery that makes a mockery of the summit’s goal to bring about an end to the use of rape and sexual violence in war.
The systematic use of sexual violence to terrorise, humiliate and subjugate communities during times of war has a dark history, with an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 women raped in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and 20,000 to 50,000 women raped during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
And Isis is not the only party in the Syrian civil war to use rape as a weapon – rape is endemic in detention centres run by the secular regime of Bashar al-Assad. But what makes Isis’s use of rape so horrifying is its attempt to justify, codify and institutionalise the practice using ostensibly religious justifications for this war crime.
In its online magazine, Dabiq, Isis says that, prior to its conquest of the Yazidi-dominated town of Sinjar, it tasked its “sharia students” to determine which “Islamic rulings” should apply to the Yazidi community. It concludes that Yazidi women could be enslaved under Islamic law and establishes that one-fifth of the women should be transferred to the Isis leadership and the remainder divided among the fighters who participated in the conquest of Sinjar. The article goes on to reassure its readership that: “Many well-known [Islamic legal] rulings are observed, including the prohibition of separating a mother from her young children.”
Based on its widely refuted interpretations of Islamic texts, Isis has gone about systematising rape, sexual assault and slavery by embedding the buying, selling and gifting of slaves into a system of rewards for its fighters. Of the estimated 3,500 Yazidi women held by Isis, survivors report being interrogated and in some cases stripped naked for sorting and categorising. They have been rated according to desirability, labelled and transported across Isis-held territory. They have been traded between fighters, and awarded by leadership as prizes.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The pastor at St. Margaret Mary Parish has been placed on leave after the archdiocese learned he was under investigation for alleged possession of child porn.
The Archdiocese of Louisville issued a release Saturday saying Fr. Stephen A. Pohl was being placed on an administrative leave of absence. Parishioners will be notified at weekend masses.
The release says he is under investigation for allegedly taking and collecting inappropriate photos of children.
Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, in a letter to parishioners dated August 14, wrote, "We realize this is a painful situation, and we want to support you during this time of uncertainty."
David Clohessy, director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, issued a statement urging church members who may have information to come forward. He also called the timing of today's release disingenuous, and criticized the Catholic church for its past handling of abuse allegations.
"We urge anyone - Catholic or not - to call law enforcement if they have any information that might help prove or disprove these troubling allegations," Clohessy said.

Father Charles Antekeier is named in a Friday, Aug. 14 statement from the Diocese.
In the statement, Bishop David J. Walkowiak expresses his "deepest apologies" to any children and their families who "have been abused by members of the clergy in the Diocese of Grand Rapids."
Antekeier was ordained in 1962 and served at the following churches during the specified years:

(CHICAGO) Two new lawsuits were filed Thursday alleging sexual abuse by convicted child molester and defrocked priest Daniel McCormack and the Archdiocese of Chicago.
The plaintiffs — two men identified only as John J.M. Doe and John K. Doe — filed the suits Thursday in Cook County Circuit Court against the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Both plaintiffs claim in their separate suits that McCormack groomed them and engaged the boys in sexual and abusive relationships from 2000 to 2003 while the priest was a pastor at St. Agatha’s Parish on the West Side.
McCormack was removed from the priesthood in November 2007 and pleaded guilty that year to abusing five other children at St. Agatha’s.

2015, the New York Times published the news “ISIS Enshrines a Theology

reportage stating clearly the two words “ISIS and rape” in their headlines. Cases in point: “Systematic rape, slavery: The
horrifying conundrum of ISIS”. “How Isis has established a
bureaucracy of rape”, (see more in news compilation
below). On the same day, on the other
side of the globe, in far away Down Under Australia – the Sydney Morning Herald
published the news with the heading –– “Australian
diplomat's son in Tokyo St Mary's child sexual abuse story”. It was
about the (consecutive) sodomy committed by two Catholic Brothers clerics on an
11 year old Jewish boy
inside a Catholic chapel in 1964, and how these Catholic pedophiles were
covered-up, were transferred from one school to another, from one country to
another, unreported to the police, hence they went unpunished for their crimes
of sodomy. This Australian Catholic news headline is
archetypical – of MSM news on thousands of Catholic pedophile priests in
the USA, in Europe, in South America – all parts of the global Vatican crimes

“I kept telling him it hurts — please stop,” said the girl, whose body is so small an adult could circle her waist with two hands. “He told me that according to Islam he is allowed to rape an unbeliever. He said that by raping me, he is drawing closer to God,” she said in an interview alongside her family in a refugee camp here, to which she escaped after 11 months of captivity.
The systematic rape of women and girls from the Yazidi religious minority has become deeply enmeshed in the organization and the radical theology of the Islamic State in the year since the group announced it was reviving slavery as an institution. I’ve been reading as deeply as I can on the origins and characteristics of ISIS, trying to come to grips with its emergence and how it might be eradicated. But the truth is that each time we have tried a largely military approach to an Islamic extremist group, we’ve succeeded in mestastizing the cancer and ensuring its re-emergence in an even more virulent form. A military component will be essential, but it will not be sufficient.
At the very least, the existence of ISIS reminds us again that true evil does exist in the world. The ideology of the group is at least as demented and cruel as that of National Socialism under Adolph Hitler, and if given the backing of a powerful state military would be as equally dangerous. Of course, the paradox is that if it relied upon the backing of a powerful state military, it would also be a lot easier to defeat. Instead it lives as almost a virus in the info-sphere, capable of quickly evolving into new forms to match whatever new conditions it encounters.
If you haven’t read this story in today’s New York Times about the systemic use of rape as a recruiting tool and even religious rite by ISIS, I urge you to do so, with the caveat that it is deeply unsettling:

Rukimini Callimachi has told the stories of those held as prisoners of
the Islamic State before. This week, her front page article detailed the
kidnapping, enslaving and ISIS-sanctioned rape of women and girls from the
Yazidi religious minority.
Ms. Callimachi talked to Times Insider about the reporting process that
lead to devastating first-person accounts from girls as young as 12-years-old
who were separated from their families and sold as sex slaves to ISIS fighters.
Q: How
did you discover this situation of the Islamic State enslaving and raping the
Yazidi women and girls?
A: Soon
after August 3 of last year, when ISIS attacked Sinjar Mountain [in Iraq], we
started seeing reports of Yazidi women saying they had been raped. At first, we
didn’t know what to make of the reports. They seemed exaggerated, and it seemed
hard to believe they had enslaved large numbers of women.
Then in
October of last year, the turning point for me was when ISIS published a
feature article in their flagship magazine, Dabiq, entitled the “The Revival of
Slavery Before the Hour.” To my horror, they laid out the fact that they had
enslaved these women and explained in granular detail the theological
justification for taking the Yazidis on the grounds that they are infidels and
nonbelievers. They were citing Quranic passages and Islamic scholars who
believe the principle that they could be enslaved.
That was
the minute I became interested in this. I was busy with a lot of other things
and couldn't really come until July of this year. That was the beginning of it.

CHILD abuse victims reacted with anger yesterday at the outcome of a long-running inquiry into the Catholic Church in Scotland’s handling of the scandal, describing it as “a joke” and “total bull****”.
Survivors’ groups insisted the eight recommendations laid down in the McLellan Commission report published yesterday was “nothing but a face-saving exercise to restore the damaged reputation of the Catholic Church”, offering nothing to help victims rebuild their broken lives.
A commission led by the Very Rev Andrew McLellan demanded that the Scottish Catholic Church make an “unmistakeable and unequivocal” apology to survivors of abuse, and insisted justice must be done and be seen to be done.
Survivors said Church leader Archbishop Tartaglia’s “profound apology” to abuse victims, which followed the publication of the report, was “16-years too late” and “meaningless”.
McLellan, former moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and one-time chief inspector of prisons, demanded support for survivors of abuse to be an “absolute priority”.

Just over a year ago, ISIS began their carefully calculated capture of the Yazidi people. Yazidi polytheism was the core reason that ISIS targeted them in August of 2014. After surrounding them on top of Mount Sinjar, they killed the men and captured the women. In the October issue of ISIS’s Dabiq journal, they admitted that it was planned and that their research found that the enslavement of Yazidi women was “justified.” This is consistent with research by Human Rights Watch., which agrees that the sex trade of minorities has been systematic and organized.
The fate of the Yazidi women hasn’t been the main topic of conversation, but a question remains: Could Muslim, Christian, and Jewish women be next?
We’re all in this together
The systematic enslavement and rape of Yazidi women is inhumane, and one of the most brutal acts that ISIS has committed in the region. Amnesty International’s report describes the escape of a small fraction of women as an “escape from hell.”
Although ISIS has systematically targeted Yazidi women in their organized slave labor camps, this is just the beginning. The future of their skewed interpretations of Islam cannot be predicted.

The document, which details the trading price of women based on their age, refers to slaves as either "Christian or Yazidi."

Isis has established a bureaucracy of rape

One year on from the summit to end sexual violence in conflict, convened by Angelina Jolie and William Hague in London, the self-proclaimed Islamic State has developed a complex bureaucracy of sex slavery that makes a mockery of the summit’s goal to bring about an end to the use of rape and sexual violence in war.
The systematic use of sexual violence to terrorise, humiliate and subjugate communities during times of war has a dark history, with an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 women raped in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and 20,000 to 50,000 women raped during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
And Isis is not the only party in the Syrian civil war to use rape as a weapon – rape is endemic in detention centres run by the secular regime of Bashar al-Assad. But what makes Isis’s use of rape so horrifying is its attempt to justify, codify and institutionalise the practice using ostensibly religious justifications for this war crime.
In its online magazine, Dabiq, Isis says that, prior to its conquest of the Yazidi-dominated town of Sinjar, it tasked its “sharia students” to determine which “Islamic rulings” should apply to the Yazidi community. It concludes that Yazidi women could be enslaved under Islamic law and establishes that one-fifth of the women should be transferred to the Isis leadership and the remainder divided among the fighters who participated in the conquest of Sinjar. The article goes on to reassure its readership that: “Many well-known [Islamic legal] rulings are observed, including the prohibition of separating a mother from her young children.”
Based on its widely refuted interpretations of Islamic texts, Isis has gone about systematising rape, sexual assault and slavery by embedding the buying, selling and gifting of slaves into a system of rewards for its fighters. Of the estimated 3,500 Yazidi women held by Isis, survivors report being interrogated and in some cases stripped naked for sorting and categorising. They have been rated according to desirability, labelled and transported across Isis-held territory. They have been traded between fighters, and awarded by leadership as prizes.

Jacob was 11 years old when he was raped, in a
Catholic school chapel, by two Brothers who threatened to do the same to his
younger brother if he spoke out. It took 48 years to break his silence. He
tells Simon Scott his story.
In late 1964, after his family moved to Japan from
Australia, Jacob Bernstein* was enrolled at St Mary's International School, a
prestigious, private school in an upmarket Tokyo neighbourhood.
His father, Robert*, a diplomat, had been posted to
the Australian embassy in the city.
Late in 1965, Jacob was searching for somewhere to
eat lunch when he passed the school chapel. Being Jewish, the 11-year-old grade
6 student couldn't eat the lunches served in the dining room. St Mary's, a
Catholic boys' school run by the Brothers of Christian Instruction, or
Mennaisians, was unable to prepare food that was kosher, so he had to bring
lunch from home.
That day his mother had prepared his favourite,
rollmops – pickled herring fillets held together with skewers – so he was eager
to tuck in. "I saw the chapel door open and went in and started eating my
lunch alone. I didn't think it was not permitted," says Bernstein.

Suddenly,
Lawrence Lambert and another Catholic Brother entered, made the sign of the
cross and then approached him. "Brother Lawrence said I was to be punished
for eating in the chapel," he recalls. "I was taken to a table near
the door and made to face it and drop my pants and bend over. I thought I was
to be spanked. One of them pulled my pants right off." Then, he says,
"Brother
Lawrence started to sodomise me. I had no idea of what he was doing, only that
it hurt."
After both men
had left the chapel, Bernstein noticed the skewer from the rollmop embedded in
his palm. "I squeezed it so hard the skewer stabbed the palm of my hand
and I later had to pull it out."

Haunted by the
memory of that day, it would be almost 50 years before Bernstein would be able
to eat his favourite childhood food again. It would take even longer to receive
apologies from the school, the Mennaisians, and Lambert, for what happened in
1965, sparking an ongoing investigation into multiple, historic cases of abuse
at the school.
To date, there
are three confirmed instances of other students being sexually abused in the
1970s, although these known cases involved a different Canadian Brother who
taught at the school, Benoit Lessard, who is now deceased. There are also two
former lay teachers from St Mary's who faced child sexual abuse charges
relating to crimes committed in the US after returning from Japan. One of them,
Donald Andrews, was convicted of an assault against a 13-year-old boy in 1997,
and the other, Frank Selas, fled the US after two arrest warrants were issued
against him for molesting at least six young boys in 1979.
After the
ordeal, Bernstein says he was told to keep silent or, if he spoke out, his
brother Tom*, a grade 2 student at the time, would be similarly
"punished". The threat worked, but a few days later his mother began
to suspect something was wrong.
In a signed
affidavit written in 2013, Jacob's mother Jane* explains the
circumstances that led to discovering her son had been abused: "In 1965,
our maid Mutsuko-san brought me a pair of [Jacob's] underpants that were
covered in blood. I immediately took him to see Dr [Alan] Fair, who was the
official embassy doctor," Mrs Bernstein wrote.
"[Jacob]
would not say what was wrong, earlier that day he did not want to go to school
and said he had a tummy bug. He was walking hunched over on the way to the
car."
After examining
Jacob, the doctor prescribed some medicine and told Mrs Bernstein that he
didn't know what was wrong. It wasn't until later that she discovered the
shocking truth.
"[Robert] came
home suddenly and told me Dr Fair had telephoned to say [Jacob] had been
sexually assaulted. We spoke to [Jacob], who would not initially say what
happened but indicated it was at school, and that if he said anything that
Brother Lawrence would do it to [Tom]. We then knew who the culprit was."
It is unclear
why the embassy doctor first notified the Australian ambassador, Sir
Allen Brown, rather than Jacob's parents or the police, but that decision, and
the Australian embassy's response, has had long-reaching consequences, the
effects of which are still being felt to this day.
According to Mrs
Bernstein, her husband informed her that "the ambassador would not have
the police called" and had decided to deal with the matter internally. The
following day, a Saturday, Jacob's parents went to the embassy.
Mrs Bernstein
recollects: "The ambassador's wife met me and took me for coffee. We later
entered a small room and there was a glass one-way mirror allowing us to see
into the ambassador's office. [Robert] and Phil [Philip Searcy, another
embassy official] were there, and a younger man who I knew was the cipher
clerk, a Mr McRae, and also Les Baken [the commercial counselor]. They were all
dressed in tennis whites except the ambassador, who was wearing a suit and
tie."
Through the
one-way mirror she watched as Lawrence Lambert, the man who raped her
11-year-old son, was brought into the room, accompanied by Brother John
Paradis, headmaster at the time.
"There was
a lot of yelling. Phil and Les grabbed Brother Lawrence's arms from behind and
held him, and Mr McRae started punching him in the stomach and chest. Brother
John got up to perhaps intervene and was pushed to the ground, causing his
glasses to fall off. The ambassador stepped on them, his wife and I then both
left."
About an hour
later, she was able to observe them leaving the embassy. "I recall seeing
Brothers John and Lawrence being pushed hard out of the chancellery door to the
driveway, down, perhaps, five steps. They hobbled away. It was like something I
expected from the Soviet embassy."
Mrs Bernstein
adds that she was later informed that Paradis had promised to send Lambert back
to Canada, and he would not be permitted to be near children again.
Jacob and his
younger brother were immediately taken out of St Mary's, and the family soon
returned to Australia. Mrs Bernstein says her husband was "advised to not
mention it again if he wanted a career". Robert Bernstein continued to
work for the Australian diplomatic service until retirement.
The following
year, as promised, Lambert was sent back to Canada, yet records indicate that
this was only a temporary measure, and by 1968 he had returned to Japan. Soon,
Lambert would be back teaching at St Mary's and in regular contact with boys
again. Photographs from the 1969 and 1970 yearbooks show he was teaching
English to elementary students during that period, despite the fact the school
and embassy knew he was a child abuser.
Lambert's career
as a teacher and Brother didn't just continue unchecked, it flourished. In 1971
he was transferred out of Tokyo to Shizuoka City to teach at another Mennaisian
school, Seiko Gakuin. In 1982, he returned to St Mary's, this time as
elementary school principal. The same year, he was also promoted to
vice-provincial of Japan for the Order. He remained elementary principal for
around three decades, until 2011.
After retiring,
Lambert continued to live at the Brothers' residence situated on the St Mary's
campus until 2013. In 2014 he left Japan and returned to Canada. He is now living
in one of the Brothers' residences in Trois Rivieres, Quebec.
The abuse
Bernstein suffered at Lambert's hands has had a devastating and far-reaching
impact. It took 48 years before he found the courage to break his silence. In
May 2013, he contacted the then headmaster of St Mary's, Brother Michel Jutras,
and told him about the abuse. This led to negotiations between Bernstein and
Brother Raymond Ducharme, the vice-provincial for Japan and the Philippines,
which ultimately culminated in a face-to-face meeting between Bernstein and the
man who had raped him.
At that meeting,
held in January 2014, at a synagogue in Shibuya, Tokyo, both Lambert and
Ducharme read out letters of apology in the presence of the rabbi.
"The simple
truth is that still today I cannot understand the fact I raped you," said
Lambert. "Somehow passion suddenly took over and I did what I should never
have done and selfishly and violently hurt your body and hurt your heart for
the rest of your life."
The letters were
then signed and presented to Bernstein. He was also handed an apology written
by Jutras, who was not present. Bernstein had also asked for an apology from
John Paradis, who was headmaster at St Mary's in 1965 and had known about the
abuse since that time, but no such letter was forthcoming.
The Mennaisians
paid for the airfares from Australia for Bernstein, his wife and child, and all
their expenses during their week-long trip to Japan.
In an email
Bernstein sent to Ducharme in 2013, he talks about how the abuse impacted his
life: "Child abuse has devastating effects. For me, Brother Lawrence
Lambert's abuse has meant I have had a life which is severely compromised from
what it might otherwise have been. To give you an example, I attempted suicide
at age 12. The abuse has robbed me of not just my childhood, but also much of
the adult who grew from that abuse."
In 2013 the
government established a Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child
Sexual Abuse. It is the largest inquiry of its kind in Australian history and
covers cases of abuse at a variety of institutions in Australia. Although Jacob
Bernstein was abused at an institution in Japan, he says he made a submission
for a private hearing on the basis that institutions and representatives of the
government, namely the embassy and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade,
and the ambassador to Japan at the time, Sir Allen Brown, all colluded to cover
up his abuse. Bernstein says he has been granted a hearing, but that a date has
yet to be set.
St Mary's
International School in Tokyo says it is unable to comment beyond formal
statements released to the school community. Requests for comment from the
Brothers of Christian Instruction went unanswered, as did those sent to the
Catholic Archdiocese of Tokyo.
A copy of Mrs
Bernstein's affidavit was sent to the Australian embassy in Tokyo. The embassy
responded by saying, "The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has deep
sympathy for victims of abuse. It takes these allegations seriously and has
provided the information you passed to the embassy, to the Australian Federal
Police."
*The name Jacob Bernstein is a pseudonym and has been
used to protect the identity of a victim of sexual abuse. The names of all of
his immediate family members are also pseudonyms, as revealing their real
identities would also expose the victim. All other names used are real.

priest placed on leave amid child porn investigation

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The pastor at St. Margaret Mary Parish has been placed on leave after the archdiocese learned he was under investigation for alleged possession of child porn.
The Archdiocese of Louisville issued a release Saturday saying Fr. Stephen A. Pohl was being placed on an administrative leave of absence. Parishioners will be notified at weekend masses.
The release says he is under investigation for allegedly taking and collecting inappropriate photos of children.
Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, in a letter to parishioners dated August 14, wrote, "We realize this is a painful situation, and we want to support you during this time of uncertainty."
David Clohessy, director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, issued a statement urging church members who may have information to come forward. He also called the timing of today's release disingenuous, and criticized the Catholic church for its past handling of abuse allegations.
"We urge anyone - Catholic or not - to call law enforcement if they have any information that might help prove or disprove these troubling allegations," Clohessy said.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- A 79-year-old retired priest with the Grand Rapids Diocese has been removed from the ministry amid sex abuse allegations stemming from the mid-1980s.

Two
new lawsuits filed against convicted defrocked priest Daniel McCormack

(CHICAGO) Two new lawsuits were filed Thursday alleging sexual abuse by convicted child molester and defrocked priest Daniel McCormack and the Archdiocese of Chicago.
The plaintiffs — two men identified only as John J.M. Doe and John K. Doe — filed the suits Thursday in Cook County Circuit Court against the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Both plaintiffs claim in their separate suits that McCormack groomed them and engaged the boys in sexual and abusive relationships from 2000 to 2003 while the priest was a pastor at St. Agatha’s Parish on the West Side.
McCormack was removed from the priesthood in November 2007 and pleaded guilty that year to abusing five other children at St. Agatha’s.

Des clients français de banques suisses, défendus par un avocat parisien, ont décidé de se rebeller contre leurs banques, accusées de les avoir mal conseillés au moment de la régularisation fiscale de leurs comptes.
Une lettre datée du 24 décembre a été envoyée par leur avocat au Médiateur des banques suisses, une instance basée à Zurich, qui analyse les situations de conflits entre les banques et leurs clients, et qui propose des solutions.
Selon la procédure devant le Médiateur, appelé l'Ombudsman en Suisse, le client qui s'estime lésé par sa banque doit présenter son argumentation. Il doit également présenter la position de la banque qui doit lui répondre.
Dans le cas concret de ces clients français des banques suisses, il s'agit de personnes qui ont détenu pendant quelques fois des années, voire des générations, des comptes non déclarés en Suisse.
Le Médiateur analyse la situation au vu des documents présentés et propose une solution. Si la banque accepte, le dossier est réglé. Si elle refuse, le client peut aller en justice. Dans le cadre des programmes de régularisations qui ont été lancés en 2009 et 2013 en France, ces clients, indique leur avocat, "ont subi un important préjudice" et "leur régularisation va leur coûter aujourd'hui dix fois plus cher qu'autrefois". L'avocat réclame aujourd'hui à ces banques des dommages et intérêts pour ses clients lésés. Selon les milieux bancaires suisses, la première régularisation, celle de 2009, prévoyait des conditions beaucoup plus douces pour les fraudeurs fiscaux repentis.
Des conditions de régularisation plus draconiennes, en 2013
Ceux qui n'en ont pas profité, et qui ont décidé de se régulariser en 2013, sont soumis à des conditions plus draconiennes. Selon un banquier genevois, "certains clients ont perdu presque tous leurs avoirs", du fait du montant très élevé des pénalités.

US Wars in Afghanistan, Iraq to Cost $6 trillion

The decade-long American wars in Afghanistan and Iraq would end up costing as much as $6 trillion, the equivalent of $75,000 for every American household, calculates the prestigious Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
Remember, when President George Bush’s National Economic Council Director, Lawrence Lindsey, had told the country’s largest newspaper “The Wall Street Journal” that the war would cost between $100 billion and $200 billion, he had found himself under intense fire from his colleagues in the administration who claimed that this was a gross overestimation.
Consequently, Lawrence Lindsey was forced to resign. It is also imperative to recall that the Bush administration had claimed at the very outset that the Iraq war would finance itself out of Iraqi oil revenues, but Washington DC had instead ended up borrowing some $2 trillion to finance the two wars, the bulk of it from foreign lenders.
According to the Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government 2013 report, this accounted for roughly 20 per cent of the total amount added to the US national debt between 2001 and 2012.
According to the report, the US “has already paid $260 billion in interest on the war debt,” and future interest payments would amount to trillions of dollars. This Harvard University report has also been carried on its website by the Centre for Research on Globalisation, which is a widely-quoted Montreal-based independent research and media organisation.
In its report under review, the 377-year old Harvard University has viewed that these afore-mentioned wars had not only left the United States heavily indebted, but would also have a profound impact on the federal government’s fiscal and budgetary crises over a protracted period.
The report has attributed the largest share of the trillions of dollars in continuing costs to care and compensation for hundreds of thousands of troops left physically and psychologically damaged by the two wars being discussed here.
The report states: “The Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, taken together, will be the most expensive wars in US history—totaling somewhere between $4 trillion and $6 trillion. This includes long-term medical care and disability compensation for service members, veterans and families, military replenishment and social and economic costs. The largest portion of that bill is yet to be paid.”
It asserts: “Another major share of the long-term costs of the wars comes from paying off trillions of dollars in debt incurred as the US government failed to include their cost in annual budgets and simultaneously implemented sweeping tax cuts for the rich. In addition, huge expenditures are being made to replace military equipment used in the two wars. The report also cites improvements in military pay and benefits made in 2004 to counter declining recruitment rates as casualties rose in the Iraq war.”
The authors of this report have warned that the legacy of decisions taken during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars would dominate future federal budgets for decades to come.
According to the Harvard University report, some 1.56 million US troops—56 per cent of all Afghanistan and Iraq veterans—were receiving medical treatment at Veterans Administration facilities and would be granted benefits for the rest of their lives.
It reveals:
“One out of every two veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan has already applied for permanent disability benefits. The official figure of 50,000 American troops “wounded in action” vastly underestimates the real human costs of the two US wars. One-third of returning veterans are being diagnosed with mental health issues—suffering from anxiety, depression, and/or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).”
The report notes that in addition, over a quarter of a million troops have suffered traumatic brain injuries (TBI), which, in many cases, were combined with PTSD, posing greater problems in treatment and recovery.
“Constituting a particularly grim facet of this mental health crisis is the doubling of the suicide rate for US Army personnel, with many who attempted suicide suffering serious injuries,” opine the report authors.
It maintains:
“Overall, the Veterans Administration’s budget has more than doubled over the past decade, from $61.4 billion in 2001 to $140.3 billion in 2013. As a share of the total US budget it has grown from 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent over the same period. Soaring medical costs for veterans is attributable to several factors. Among them is that, thanks to advancements in medical technology and rapid treatment, soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have survived wounds that would have cost their lives in earlier conflicts.”
The Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government report has estimated: “While the US government has already spent $134 billion on medical care and disability benefits for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, this figure will climb by an additional $836 billion over the coming decades.”
It notes that the largest expenditures on health care for World War II veterans took place in the 1980s, roughly four decades after the war, and that spending on medical care and disability payments for Vietnam War veterans was still on the rise.
Here follows the description:
“The most common medical problems suffered by troops returning from the two wars include: diseases of the musculoskeletal system (principally joint and back disorders); mental health disorders; central nervous system and endocrine system disorders; as well as respiratory, digestive, skin and hearing disorders. Overall, some 29 per cent of these troops have been diagnosed with PTSD.”
The report goes on to argue:
“Among the most severely wounded are 6,476 soldiers and Marines who have suffered “severe penetrating brain injury,” and another 1,715 who have had one or more limbs amputated. Over 30,000 veterans are listed as suffering 100 percent service-related disabilities, while another 145,000 are listed as 70 to 90 percent disabled.”
It reads:
“The worst of these casualties have taken place under the Obama administration as a result of the so-called surge that the Democratic president ordered in Afghanistan.”
It mentions that the Walter Reed Medical Centre, US Army’s flagship hospital at Washington DC, was treating hundreds of recent amputees and severe casualties, adding that this facility had received 100 amputees for treatment during 2010; 170 amputees in 2011; and 107 amputees in 2012.
The report has also stated that the US Marines have suffered an especially high toll.
The report points out:
“Massive direct spending on the two imperialist interventions continues. With over 60,000 US troops remain in Afghanistan, it is estimated that the cost of deploying one American soldier for one year in this war amounts to $1 million. These troops continue suffering casualties—including in so-called “green on blue” attacks by Afghan security forces on their ostensible allies. As they are brought home, they will further drive up the costs of medical care and disability compensation. The US is maintaining a vast diplomatic presence in Iraq, including at least 10,000 private contractors providing support in security, IT, logistics, engineering and other occupations; as well as logistics support and payments for leased facilities in Kuwait.”
In its conclusion, the report not only seeks to dispel illusions that ending full-scale wars in Iraq and Afghanistan would produce any kind of “peace dividend” that could help ameliorate conditions of poverty, unemployment and declining living standards for working people in the US itself, but makes it clear that the legacy of decisions made during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts would impose significant long-term costs on the federal government for many years to come.

Prominent academic and author Dr Michel Chossudovsky warned that the so-called war on terrorism is a front to propagate America’s global hegemony and create a New World Order.
Dr Chossudovsky said terrorism is made in the US and that terrorists are not the product of the Muslim world.
According to him, the US global war on terrorism was used to enact anti-terrorism laws that demonised Muslims in the Western world and created Islamophobia.
Elaborating on his argument, Dr Chossudovsky said that NATO was responsible for recruiting members of the Islamic state while Israel is funding “global jihad elements inside Syria”.

We, the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS), salute the heroic resistance of the Kurdish people and their army in Rojava, the YPG/YPJ – People’s Protection Units – against the criminal gangs of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) in Kobane, one of the self-governing cantons of West Kurdistan (Rojava) in Syria.
We call on all the more than 300 ILPS member-organizations in 38 countries around the globe to take initiative and express their solidarity and support to the Kurdish people's resistance in Kobane and the whole of Rojava, or join the demonstrations being organized by the Kurdish liberation movement in different parts of the world.
The ILPS condemns the super-terrorist US for creating the ISIS monster that has rampaged through parts of Syria and Iraq, committing hideous crimes against the people in areas that they have overrun. We condemn Turkey for collaborating with the US in creating, arming and coddling this horde of terrorists.
ISIS and similar extremist Islamist terrorist groups like the Al Qaeda and Al-Nustra have been created by the US as part of its over-all scheme to remake the Middle-East, by carrying out regime change in such countries as Libya and Syria that have dared to assert their national sovereignty against imperialist plunder and war. For its part, the Turkish government is using ISIS to attack the Kurdish liberation struggle led by the PKK.
ISIS terrorists have been trained by US Special Forces in secret NATO bases inside Turkey and Jordan. For the last year and a half, the US has been developing what the world has now come to know as ISIS. Turkey has allowed safe passage through its borders of jihadists from different parts of the world to join ISIS, and has facilitated the transport of wounded ISIS terrorists to be treated in hospitals in the Turkish province of Urfa and other cities in Turkey.
The US is remaking the Middle-East in order to consolidate its hegemony in this oil-rich region. It is using the ISIS in the same manner as it has used Neo-Nazi gangs in the Ukraine to stir up trouble and force regime change, toppling the duly-elected president, and replacing him with a pro-Western president and a fascist military junta as part of US-NATO strategy to encircle and pressure Russia.
In the wake of the hideous crimes of the ISIS, including the massacre of Shiites and Christians, and the beheading of Western journalists, the US has pretended to adopt a policy of opposing ISIS and carrying out bombing raids against ISIS. In fact, the US is still thereby using the ISIS as the pretext to violate the national sovereignty of Syria.
The US war planes are actually bombing food granaries and buildings in Syria which are away from ISIS positions. They are now in a position to attack the forces of the Syrian government. Turkey has also exposed its real dirty agenda to attack the Kurdish liberation struggle by bombing PKK forces in Oramar (Daglica) near the border with Iraq, relieving ISIS from the successful counter-attacks of the Kurdish fighters and allowing the ISIS to block humanitarian aid from Iraqi Kurdistan.
The Kurdish resistance forces in Kobane have said that they can defeat the ISIS without any need for foreign intervention such as that falsely offered by the US and Turkey. All they need from Iraqi Kurdistan are sufficient weapons and ammunition against the tanks and vehicles mounted with big guns of the ISIS terrorists.
The terrible crimes being perpetrated by the ISIS and the support given them by the US and Turkey have aroused the anger of freedom-loving people throughout the world. At the same time, the heroic resistance of the YPG/YPJ – the People’s Protection Units – composed of Kurdish men and women, has inspired the people of the world to rally in support of the Kurdish liberation struggle.
We must show our solidarity to the Kurdish people in their hour of need and give them all-out support until victory.

A History of Guatemala’s Syphilis Experiment: How a U.S. Led Team Performed Human Experimentations in Central America
Dr. Cyril Broderick, A Liberian scientist and a former professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Liberia’s College of Agriculture and Forestry says the West, particularly the U.S. is responsible for the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Dr. Broderick claims the following in an exclusive article published in the Daily Observer based in Monrovia, Liberia. He wrote the following:
The US Department of Defense (DoD) is funding Ebola trials on humans, trials which started just weeks before the Ebola outbreak in Guinea and Sierra Leone. The reports continue and state that the DoD gave a contract worth $140 million dollars to Tekmira, a Canadian pharmaceutical company, to conduct Ebola research. This research work involved injecting and infusing healthy humans with the deadly Ebola virus. Hence, the DoD is listed as a collaborator in a “First in Human” Ebola clinical trial (NCT02041715, which started in January 2014 shortly before an Ebola epidemic was declared in West Africa in March.
Is it possible that the United States Department of Defense (DOD) and other Western countries are directly responsible for infecting Africans with the Ebola virus? Dr. Broderick claims that the U.S. government has a research laboratory located in a town called Kenema in Sierra Leone that studies what he calls “viral fever bioterrorism”, It is also the town where he acknowledges that is the “epicentre of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.” Is it a fact? Is Dr. Broderick a conspiracy theorist? He says that “there is urgent need for affirmative action in protecting the less affluent of poorer countries, especially African citizens, whose countries are not as scientifically and industrially endowed as the United States and most Western countries, sources of most viral or bacterial GMOs that are strategically designed as biological weapons.” He also asks an important question when he says “It is most disturbing that the U. S. Government has been operating a viral hemorrhagic fever bioterrorism research laboratory in Sierra Leone. Are there others?”
Well, Mr. Broderick’s claims seem to be true. After all, the U.S. government has been experimenting with deadly diseases on human beings for a long time, history tells us so. One example is Guatemala. Between 1946 and 1948, the United States government under President Harry S. Truman in collaboration with Guatemalan President Juan José Arévalo and his health officials deliberately infected more than 1500 soldiers, prostitutes, prisoners and even mental patients with syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chancroid (a bacterial sexual infection) out of more than 5500 Guatemalan people who participated in the experiments. The worst part of it is that none of the test subjects infected with the diseases ever gave informed consent. The Boston Globe published the discovery made by Medical historian and professor at Wellesley College, Susan M. Reverby in 2010 called ‘Wellesley professor unearths a horror: Syphilis experiments in Guatemala.’ It stated how she came across her discovery:
