Isn’t that nice that a young girl 17 years old won over 77 years old Pope Francis and she didn’t have to lobby the Nobel Peace Prize Committee nor bribe them with millions of dollars in private Vatican Swiss Banks account to vote for her.  Pope Francis has bribed almost all magazine to put him in its cover – especially Time Magazine (which the Opus Dei Beast owns), but Malala is simply speaking out from wherever humble abode she can, while Pope Francis has the massive St. Peter’s Square to preach empty talks.  Good news, good girl Malala has donated her prize money to build (bombed) schools in Gaza, see news updates below.  And she doesn’t have to wear no fancy Vatican Circus fattest clown-in-white costume.

The Nobel Committee agreed with SNAP who wrote last Thursday that “Some will be offended by our saying this, but we hope the esteemed Nobel committee does not award the Nobel Peace Prize to Pope Francis. While he’s made strides in improving church governance and finances and speaks often about the poor, that doesn’t merit a prize of this stature. And he’s done almost nothing to protect kids, expose predators, punish enablers, and deter future child sex crimes and cover ups. And it would be very ironic were the Pope to win the Nobel Peace Prize in the same year two United Nations panels harshly criticized his institution for continuing cover ups of sexual violence by clergy. What other "head of state" who has been cited for non-compliance with United Nations treaties on torture and children’s rights is up for consideration?

At best, giving such an award to Francis now would be premature. He’s done and said some good things said a few good things. Many hope that these largely symbolic gestures will eventually result in some concrete progress. But the most compelling issue for us – and for millions - is that he has yet to really act on the problem that demands the most action from him, the ongoing clergy sexual abuse and cover up crisis.

For decades, now it has been devastating children and families around the globe.

Thousands of predatory priests and complicit bishops remain free, in office, and face few or any consequences. And children worldwide remain at risk. For this, he should be considered for a Nobel Prize? We respectfully disagree.

The Norwegian Nobel committee on Friday will announce this year’s winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, an award that comes with an onslaught of media attention, often a dollop of controversy, and a $1.24 million check.

In a year full of war and raging debates about the use of military force, there is also no shortage of contenders for the peace prize, from critics of Vladimir Putin to Vladimir Putin himself to a group championing a constitutional clause. Yes, a constitutional clause.

The selection process is famously shrouded in secrecy -- the official nomination list is kept under wraps for 50 years. But we do know there were 278 nominations this year -- a record number -- and because some of the nominators talk, we know who a few are.

The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), a Norwegian peace studies organization that monitors the Nobel committee, publishes a list of confirmed candidates, a tiny fraction of the overall total. But that doesn’t stop speculation -- or in Britain, a flurry of betting -- about the person or organization that will soon be listed alongside laureates like Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa  and Nelson Mandela.

Here are some of the favorites with betting odds from two popular bookmakers here, Paddy Power and William Hill:

1. Pope Francis

The bookies' favorite, Pope Francis, could become the first pontiff in the history of the prize. The 77-year-old Argentine was nominated by Argentina's congress, with his sponsor, legislator Oscar Martinez, saying that the pope had been “decisive in maintaining international peace through his clear position regarding the conflict in Syria." The pope’s rhetoric is new, and he has undoubtedly changed the tone of global Catholicism, winning praise for his humility and focus on the poor.

The Time magazine 2013 “Person of the Year” is also hugely popular with the bookies, taking in more money than any other nominee.

But commentators wonder whether peaceful rhetoric and humble gestures alone are enough, and just 18 months into his papacy, Pope Francis is still pretty new at being the pope -- although as President Obama’s 2009 prize proved, being a newbie on the job isn’t necessarily a negative for the committee.

2. Edward Snowden

The former NSA contractor’s extensive revelations have sparked a global debate about electronic surveillance and personal liberties. In explaining why they nominated Snowden, Norwegian politicians Bård Vegar Solhjell and Snorre Valen said: “We do not necessarily condone or support all of his disclosures.” But they said the subsequent debate and policy changes triggered by the Snowden leaks have “contributed to a more stable and peaceful world order.”

And who knows, maybe Snowden is on a roll, having recently won Sweden’s Right Livelihood Award, also called the "Alternative Nobel Prize."

But his leaks remain controversial and many American and British officials consider him a traitor. The Norwegian committee may not want to risk alienating the United States, a key ally of Norway, on an issue concerning national security.

3. “Japanese people who conserve Article 9”

Paddy Power: 50/1

William Hill: 50/1 In the pantheon of unusual nominations over the years, this one ranks high. Article 9 refers to a clause in the Japanese constitution, drawn up following World War II, that states that Japan will “forever renounce war” and the “threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes.” The Japanese government’s “reinterpretation” of this pacifist clause earlier this year sparked a public backlash, with campaigners arguing that the clause is one of the reasons Japan has not waged war in nearly 70 years.

Kristian Berg Harpviken, the director of PRIO and a respected Nobel Prize commentator, recently chose this group as his top pick. He is the first to admit he doesn’t have a solid track record in predicting the winner, but he believes this could be the year for this off-beat choice. It would, he said, be a nod to nonaggression and would “reorientate the prize to the core of Nobel’s original will.”

On the other hand, the last two winners have been organizations -- in 2013, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and in 2012, the European Union -- and the committee may prefer an individual this year.

4. Novaya Gazeta

William Hill: 66/1

Known for its investigative reporting and for taking a critical stance on the Kremlin, the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta could become the first media organization to win the prize. And there is a neat little historic tie-in: Mikhail Gorbachev helped to set up the paper with money from his own Nobel Peace Prize.

Harpviken said the conflict in the Ukraine was of enormous concern to the committee, who have also been on the lookout over the past few years for media candidates that could highlight the importance of free speech. Harpviken said doubts have been raised in Norway as to whether a Nobel committee led by  Thorbjørn Johansen could be capable of awarding the prize to Novaya Gazeta. Johansen is also the secretary general of the Council of Europe, which has Russia as a member.

But the committee has previously handed out an award, knowing it may ruffle diplomatic feathers. In 2010, the award was given to Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, leading to frosty relations between Norway and China.

5. Denis Mukwege

Paddy Power: 5/1

William Hill: 6/1

The 59-year-old Congolese gynecologist has pioneered treatment for tens of thousands of victims of sexual violence. In addition to medical support, Mukwege’s clinic offers women psychological and socio-economic care.

Ending sexual violence has been a high-profile advocacy issue this year, with the likes of the British government hosting an international summit on the topic this summer.

Mukwege is less controversial than some of the other candidates, and his medical and advocacy work are very much in the spirit of the award. But other issues may overshadow this one.

6. Malala Yousafzai

William Hill: 10/1

Highly touted to win last year, the Pakistani schoolgirl who defied the Taliban is once again considered a favorite. Yousafzai was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman for arguing that girls have a right to go to school. She received treatment in Birmingham, U.K., where she now lives with her family and continues to campaign for girls’ rights to an education.

The committee may feel that Yousafzai is too young -- at 17, she would be by far the youngest peace prize winner. But with rising extremism in the Middle East and South Asia, the committee may be looking out for a person such as Yousafzai, whose visibility and personal story mean that she can speak about tolerance and the fight against extremism like few others.

A small newspaper writer Joseph Tevington of the Bucks County Courier Times in Pennsylvania has detected the subtle snaky deceits coming out of giant journalists from AP, Reuters and Boston Globe and he is not afraid to special mention them. Tevington wrote in his article entitled boldly, Don't believe what you read: Church teaching isn't changing. Whoa, don’t believe what you read, idiot Catholics!
Tevington began his article, “Like many local newspapers, the Courier Times relies on large news organizations for national and international news. In the area of religious news, those organizations have a small pool of writers who may or who may not be well-equipped for their specialized work”. Then he gave specific examples.
Further on he wrote, “Whether one agrees with what the Catholic Church teaches, it strikes me that anyone seeking information would want, and be entitled to, accurate reporting. Whether it is intentional or not, the reports from the AP, Reuters and Boston Globe seem misleading”.

Malala Yousafzai is putting her own accolades toward a global mission for change.

The recent Nobel Peace Prize winner -- who gained international prominence forsurviving gunshot wounds to the face at the hands of the Taliban in 2012 -- announced on Wednesday that she is donating the $50,000 she was given for the World Children's Prize toward the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, the Associated Press reported. The organization is rebuilding schools that were damaged in the Israel-Hamas conflict this summer, according to the Daily Beast.

"Innocent Palestinian children have suffered terribly and for too long," Yousafzai said at the event in Stockholm on Wednesday, according to NBC News noted. "We must all work to ensure Palestinian boys and girls, and all children everywhere, receive a quality education in a safe environment. Because without education, there will never be peace."

The United Nations reported that 490 Palestinian children were killed in the 50-day conflict in Gaza, according to The Independent, and violence left roughly 20,000 homes in the area uninhabitable. As the Daily Beast reported, Malala's prize money will be used to help restore 65 schools that were damaged in the conflict.

The Pakistani activist has been advocating for human rights for years. More recently, Malala made headlines for calling the world to act in saving the kidnapped Nigerian school girls from Boko Haram, and helping Syrian refugees cross the border into neighboring Jordan to find safety amid civil violence.

The Failure of the Sacraments

There’s an elephant quietly sitting in the nave that everyone on all sides of the clergy sex abuse crisis have been diligently ignoring, even the victims themselves. No clergy or even would-be reformers have really remarked on it yet, although it should be more obvious with each and every sad story. More importantly, it is a troubling issue that touches on the very heart and soul of Catholicism.

The monstrous truth is simply this: what the clergy sex abuse crisis clearly demonstrates is that the sacramental system has failed.

This is not just a case of hierarchical reneging of responsibility.There’s more to this than some bad apples. This is nothing that a few reforms can fix, some screening of seminarians or more pastoral responses by bishops. It is nothing less than a fundamental challenge to the entire Catholic Church, and it shows that the spiritual principles the whole structure is supposedly based on simply do not work.

Think about it. The offenders here are Roman Catholic priests, highly trained men. But unlike other professionals, these men are supposedly set apart and dedicated to lives of the spirit. They claim to have the power to forgive sins and make God appear.

They not only administer the sacraments to others, but also receive them themselves daily. That means, among other things, frequent confession to other priests. Moreover, many of these men belong to religious orders or are otherwise under close spiritual direction. They are supposed to confide everything to their confessors and superiors and to obey them unquestioningly.

So what went wrong? When an abusive priest goes to confession, does he start, “Bless me, father, for I have sinned: I buggered an altar boy three times this week”? And does the confessor tell him to say 3 Our Fathers and 4 Hail Marys and not to do it again?

According to their own theory, confessors have the power to forgive sins, but also to refuse to do so if sorrow is insufficient. Moreover, they are to appoint penances – if they wish, they can require satisfaction or significant signs of reform from the penitent before absolution. Some sins – such as solicitation for sex in the confessional – are even deemed so serious that only higher prelates, sometimes only the Pope or his appointed delegate can forgive them.

Yet the abusers continue to abuse. So are the sexually active priestslying to their confessors? This would mean that not only do the perpetrating priests remain in a state of mortal sin and are automatically excommunicated, they perform the sacraments in that state which is itself a grave sacrilege.

Or, even worse, are all the abusive priests linked? Do they only go to confession to like-minded perps who will understand? Is there then an organized network of sexually perpetrating priests, all busily enabling each other? This adds collusion and conspiracy to the sinand would indicate that the very structure itself is rotten to the core.

The evidence available suggests that perhaps both scenarios are true to varying degrees in different situations. Either way, however, the result is much the same.

The sacraments are meant to unite believers with Christ. Not just to remove the accumulations of sin like the weekly laundry, but togradually improve the recipient. They are intended to sanctify and uplift the faithful, increase devotion to God, charity to fellow humans, and moral stamina in the face of evil.

If the sacraments actually worked like this, wouldn’t we hear ennobling stories of clerical reform, of some molester inspired to truly repent and devote himself to the cause? But rather, the stories are depressingly the same, of priests caught time and again, transferred, treated, and now finally, laicized often against their will, with no regret or even acknowledgement of their evil.

What this means, each person must decide in their own conscience. But perhaps the fall off in confessions over the years itself tells the story. Why should anyone, lay or not, risk a ritual that seems so impotent in promoting reform and may, instead of granting grace, actually expose them to greater human wickedness?

    It has been almost one full year since Pope Francis was elected to take Pope Benedict XVI’s place in the Vatican. He has been hailed by both the Catholic community and its critics for his openness to bringing much needed reform to the outdated ethos of the church. His forthcoming attitude has alleviated some concerns about how the Vatican can reconcile its beliefs with those of its more youthful and liberal followers. However, for all of his efforts to reconnect, Francis has failed to truly address the patterns of sexual abuse and exploitation by clerics supported by the Vatican.
    In a recent interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Francis made comments defending the church’s response to reports of sexual abuse, claiming that it is “the only public institution to have acted with transparency and responsibility. No other has done more. And, the church is the only one to be attacked.” It is true that the church has been under scrutiny for quite some time — last month, a UN committee issued a report criticizing the Church’s policies on a range of issues, calling for the removal of any known sexual abusers and release of records of sexual assault allegations against clerics.

    It is also true that he has publicly acknowledged the problem, and in December he created a committee to evaluate methods to protect sexually abused children and more effectively screen men seeking to become priests for sexual deviance. This committee, however, is strictly advisory, and there is almost no information available regarding how it has gone about measuring the breadth of the problem. The “transparency” Francis speaks of does not exist.
