were writing our blogs about the recent canonization of John Paul II and the
events at the UN, Christ inspired and impelled us to include photos of nuns who

as “Stupid Catholic nuns worshipping the Opus Dei new Golden Cow Saint John
Paul II.” We doubted that inner voice that lingers up to now and in hindsight,
Christ was right.

The man
who discovered the remains of hundreds of babies in a septic tank has recalled
the "tiny skeletons" he encountered when he unearthed the grave when
he was just 12 years old.
Frannie
Hopkins was playing with a friend at the site in Tuam, Co Galway, back in 1975
when the pair noticed that one of the slabs covering an old septic tank had
come loose.
"At
the time we found a concrete slab over what I described at the time as a tank,
I now see it was a tomb," he said.
While
Taoiseach Enda Kenny has confirmed that a review of the extent of these mass
graves around the country will be carried out, there is extensive evidence that
officials knew of the high number of infant deaths in these homes decades ago.
Records
show that of 120 babies born in a home in Roscrea, Co Tipperary, in one year,
60 died.
In 1930,
42 babies died in the Tuam home at the centre of the emerging scandal.
Inspectors
found that malnutrition was common and certain infections spread quickly.

The Ireland of 1924 was a bleak place for anyone who didn’t subscribe to a narrow, rigidly Catholic view of the world, as the following newspaper extract shows.
The most conservative revolutionaries ever, as Kevin O’Higgins described himself and his colleagues, wasted no time in getting down to ultra-orthodox business, stamping out everything that didn’t fit in with their emotionally-dysfunctional outlook on life, and that included books. Barely eight years later, of course, in another European country, book-burning would assume an even more sinister place in history, but the ignorance was the same.
The overbearing intolerance behind the acts of intellectual vandalism was no greater in Germany than it had been in Ireland, only two years after achieving freedom for a small elite and selling it to the masses as a great act of liberation.
Just read this, from the proceedings of Galway County Council in 1925, in case you doubted what sort of country the freedom fighters carved out for the weak, the poor or those with the temerity to think for themselves. Is this any different to behaviour we’d expect from the Taliban, or any of the other ignorant, oppressive religious extremist groups we like to condemn these days?
Context: this book-burning took place in an Ireland where unmarried mothers were classified as offenders. It happened the same year the Tuam mothers and babies home was set up, where the Bon Secours nuns used the young women as slaves and penitents, and where 800 children died of malnutrition and neglect in the name of Christianity, because the Irish people were so ashamed of themselves, of their humanity and of their very survival that they treated their own daughters as pariahs and criminals.

A pensioner has told how he and other children were

Tom Ward, 72, spent five and a half years at the
institution before he was fostered by a Galway family.
He said: “The teachers, doctors, priests, they all
looked down on us. We were only a number but things have changed, thanks be to God.
“I was
fostered off to somebody. There were a lot of us fostered people. They got paid
for having us in the house and they reared us, but the priests, the teachers,
they all left us out.
“When we
would go to town events or coming down from Mass, someone would say ‘Who’s the
little laddie?’ and they would reply ‘Oh he was fostered out of that home’ and all eyes turned away. We were

Private firm conducts radar tests at Tuam site

A private engineering company has carried out a subsurface radar
examination of the site at the former Bons Secours mother-and-baby home in
Tuam, Co Galway.
The examination follows reports of an unmarked mass grave at the
former Catholic church-run home, where almost 800 children died between 1925
and 1961.
TST Engineering was commissioned to do the work by the Irish
Mail on Sunday.
The examination has been completed and a company spokesperson
told RTÉ the results will be known within a few days.
In a statement, the Irish Mail on Sunday confirmed the Ground
Penetrating Radar analysis was conducted by TST Engineering.
"Following consultation and ongoing co-operation with local
historian Catherine Corless and the Children's Home Graveyard Committee, the
Irish Mail on Sunday commissioned a survey of the site of the alleged mass
grave at the site of the former Tuam mother and baby home at the Dublin Road
housing estate.

The discovery of a grave containing the remains of as many as
800 babies at a former home for unmarried mothers in Ireland is yet another
problem for the Irish Catholic Church. The mother and baby home at Tuam in
County Galway was run by the nuns of the Sisters of Bon Secours and operated
between 1925 and 1961. It took in thousands of women who had committed the
“mortal sin” of unwed pregnancy, delivered their babies and was charged with caring
for them. But unsanitary conditions, poor food and a lack of medical care led
to shockingly high rates of infant mortality. Babies’ bodies were deposited in
a former sewage tank.
Sadly, the mass grave at Tuam is probably not unique. I visited
the site — the home was demolished in the 1970s — and spoke with locals who
remember babies’ skulls emerging from the soil around their houses. When boys
broke open the cover of the sewage pit, they found it “full to the brim” of
skeletons. Tuam was only one of a dozen mother and baby homes in Ireland in the
years after the Second World War, all of which treated their inmates in a
similar fashion.
During 10 years of research into the Catholic Church’s treatment
of “fallen women” — I wrote about one of them in my book, Philomena, later
turned into a feature film starring Dame Judi Dench — I discovered that the
girls were refused medical attention, including painkillers, during even the
most difficult births; the nuns told them the pain was the penance they must
pay for their sin. In the home where Philomena gave birth, an unkempt plot
bears the names of babies and mothers, some as young as 15. There are
undoubtedly many more there who have no memorial. ...
That sense of guilt and shame remained with the girls for life.
One woman whose child was born in Tuam told me she felt it was wrong of her to
talk to me even now. At first it was hard to persuade Philomena to tell me her
story, too. But when my book was published, she received letters from other
“fallen women” saying how grateful they were that someone had had the courage
to break the Omertà .
The warped code of honour behind the decades of silence had been
inculcated by an all-powerful Catholic Church. For much of the late 20th
century, the Irish civil authorities were in thrall to the hierarchy;
Archbishop John Charles McQuaid threatened pulpit denunciations if the
government contradicted his policies. So the state connived in the mother and
baby homes, paying the nuns at Tuam and all the other homes a per capita rate
for every inmate.

I just learned that in Ireland, Father Fintan Monaghan, a
Catholic Church official in whose archdiocese the skeletal remains of almost
800 children were found in a septic tank, weighed in with an opinion on the
matter.
The bones, if you’ll recall, are those of babies who were born
to unwed mothers, and who died under the awful neglect of Bon Secours nuns
between 1925 and 1961. The child mortality rate in Irish Catholic institutions
for “fallen women” was reportedly as high as fifty percent.
Regarding the remains of the 800 children found in that sewage
tank, Monaghan told a TV crew:
“I suppose we can’t really judge the past from our point of
view, from our lens. All we can do is mark it appropriately and make sure there
is a suitable place here where people can come and remember the babies that
died.”
Got that? We can’t judge the past. Pray tell, father — just how
recently should acts of such crassness and cruelty have taken place so that we

The Pro Life Campaign group says it is too early to say whether
a criminal investigation should be carried out in relation to the Tuam babies
scandal.
The bodies of hundreds of dead babies were discovered in a
septic tank on the grounds of a former Mother and Baby Home in Co Galway.
Last night, the Sisters of Bon Secours, who ran the home, said
its members would co-operate fully with any Government inquiry.
Some TDs have claimed the mass grave should be treated as a
crime scene and a Garda investigation should be launched.
But the Childrens' Minister said it is not up to him to tell the
Gardaà what they should or should not be investigating.
Cora Sherlock of Pro Life Campaign says the full facts of what
happened should be established first, before deciding whether a criminal
investigation is warranted.

In 1995, several young boys in western Ireland came across
something buried beneath a cracked piece of concrete. It turned out to be the
septic tank for an old building, demolished decades earlier, that had been
known as The Home. Run by the Bon Secours nuns, a Catholic sect, The Home had
been, from 1925 to 1961, a place where unwed pregnant Irish women could hide
themselves from an astonishingly judgmental society to carry their babies to
term, and then flee into whatever new life they could manage to find.
Being unmarried and
pregnant in Ireland during this time, you see, was utterly unforgiveable, and
dangerous. A fair portion of the reason for this was the fact that Ireland -
riven and torn asunder by disputed British rule, IRA warfare and all attendant
chaos therein - saw fit to leave a vast swath of social concerns like
schooling, orphanages and hospitals in
the hands of the Catholic Church...and while the newly-minted Pope Francis has put a broadly-grinning happy face on
Catholic doctrine, the fact of the matter is that women took the brunt of the
consequences when they were raped and got pregnant, or had sex and got
pregnant, because of the Church's ironclad teachings.
The children, also. The
nuns charged to care for the children of The Home deliberately ostracized them
from the other children in the community, starved them, neglected them,
disdained them, because they were the offspring of "fallen" women who
had dared to get pregnant outside of the bonds of holy Catholic matrimony. The so-called "sins" of the
mother were visited brutally and harshly upon their children.
You see, that septic tank
those boys found in 1995 was filled with the bones of some 800 children who had
been delivered in The Home. Malnutrition and neglect, measles and tuberculosis
and pneumonia, compounded by disgust for the mothers who bore them, laid waste
to these children. Their remains were not buried, or burned, or even thrown in
a trash heap. They were dropped into a
vat of feces and urine, and at the time of this printing, their bones remain
there still.

has lot of films and TV shows that romanticise the 1950s. I don't think we have
any. Instead we have lots of films that do the opposite and I think a huge part
of the reason is that we are still haunted by the fact that we put so many
people into mostly church-run institutions that were often inhuman and
dehumanising.
Britain
also had its institutions and they were also terrible places. But we seemed to
have more of them, we put proportionately more people into them and we kept
them open until closer to the present day.

example of the awfulness of many of our institutions has just come to light,

Taoiseach Enda Kenny yesterday admitted that more mass baby graves – other than
the one found at Tuam, Co Galway – could possibly exist throughout Ireland.

woman Martina Keogh holds this very suspicion.
Martina
was sent to St Joseph’s industrial school in Clifden, Co Galway by the courts,
for the crime of stealing an apple and a swimming suit.
She spent
almost two years at the school in the 1960s – and during this time she claims
that some babies disappeared.
She
believes that the case of the Clifden school warrants a full analysis by the
Government, in relation to whether babies died while in the care of the Sisters
of Mercy and if so, where they were buried.
Martina,
from Dublin’s north inner city, entered the home for orphans aged nine.
As one of
the older children, she remembers a grim situation where babies were
malnourished.

A
survivor of the Tuam Mothers-and-Babies home has said it was a
"miracle" he survived – describing it as akin to a
"rabbit colony" with hundreds of children living in an environment
with overflowing toilets and little care.

Rodgers was born in the home in 1947. Just 13 months after his birth, he was
separated from his mother who was moved to the Magdalene Laundry in Galway city
while he remained in the home until he was fostered at the age of five.
"It
wouldn't be very fond memories I have of it," he said.
Speaking
of the large numbers of children growing up in the harshest of conditions, Mr
Rodgers, pictured right at the site of the grave, said it was nothing short of
a miracle that he survived.
"I
can't say for sure but in my mind's eye there were probably about 200 children.
The place was just alive with children. I remember being in the playground,
standing there alone, maybe not very well as I do remember a period where I was
very, very ill. Thankfully I came out of it but I was probably no different
from anybody else in the place," he added.
Speaking
about the conditions growing up, Mr Rodgers recollects clearly the shed with
sinks to wash at and open-air toilets.

discovery of the bodies of almost 800 babies near a ‘mother and baby’ home in

Disturbing revelations about an unmarked “mass grave” of up to 800 babies and children found in Tuam, County Galway, must prompt urgent answers from the Irish Government about the wider issue of past child abuse in state-run and sponsored institutions, said Amnesty International today.
“This
shocking case needs immediate attention and answers from the Irish Government.
A thorough investigation must be carried out into how these children died and
if ill-treatment, neglect or other human rights abuses factored into their
deaths. We also need to
know why these children were not afforded the respect of a proper and dignified
burial,” said John Dalhuisen, Europe and Central Asia Programme Director at
Amnesty International.
Irish and
international media have reported that the remains of 796 babies and children
were found in a septic tank in Tuam. The site, on the grounds of an institution
run by a religious order of nuns, was operated as a ‘home’ for unmarried
mothers, reportedly between 1925 and 1961, at a time when bearing a child
outside marriage carried significant social stigma. Reports suggest
that a local historian compiled information on the remains, and it was brought
it to the attention of the Irish Government last year.
“The
Irish Government must not
view this and other cases as merely historic and beyond its human rights
obligations,” said John Dalhuisen.
The
international human rights framework of law emerged during the period in which
these children lived and died. If the home closed in 1961,
it is possible that some of the deaths occurred at a time when the European Convention on Human Rights was in
force. Even before then, Ireland was aware of the internationally agreed norms expected of it in
the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human
Rights.

to the recent discovery of the bodies of nearly 800 babies, long dead, stored
in a septic tank at a Catholic institution for unwed mothers in western
Ireland.
Officials
will now investigate whether there are additional mass graves near other homes
for unmarried mothers, Agence France-Presse reported Prime Minister Enda Kenny
saying Thursday.
Kenny
said Irish authorities will “draw together a number of senior officials from
across the departments until we see what the scale is, what’s involved here,
and whether this is isolated or if there are others around the country that
need to be looked at.” He said Dublin must decide what the “best thing to do in
the interest of dealing with yet another element of our country’s past.”
Another
leading Irish politician, Brendan Howlin, said a criminal investigation may be
in the future. “The government is ruling out nothing,” he said, according to
the Daily Mail. “The sense of revulsion almost all of the people of Ireland
have at the callous disregard for the most innocent of our young people has to
be met with openness and with clarity, and that’s what the Government will do.”

For more
than half-a-century it has hidden a terrible secret, a horrifying and sinister
reminder of a shameful chapter in Irish history.
At the
site of a former home run by the Catholic Church in Tuam, a small town west of
the Irish midlands, lies a mass grave filled with the bodies of almost 800
children.
Locals
have known about it since 1975, when two boys broke apart a concrete slab and
discovered a tomb filled with small skeletons. The remains, interred in a
concrete septic tank, were initially thought to be from the Great Famine era of
the 1840s.
A parish priest said prayers and the site was
sealed once more, the number of bodies below unknown, their names forgotten.
Little more was thought about the grave until about
10 years ago when a historian, Catherine Corless, began investigating
children's deaths at the home. What she discovered has shocked her, appalled
the Irish State and made headlines around the world.

As the
outpouring of shock and anger triggered by revelations surrounding events at a

believed to have held victims of the Irish famine of the 1840s — was on the
property of a "mother and baby home" run by the Bon Secours nuns
between 1925 and 1961; while the cause of death is unknown, the unsanitary
conditions of the homes was likely a major factor.
The
mother and baby homes, along with the Magdalene laundries for "fallen
women" and other institutions erected by the Catholic Church in Ireland (often
with state participation), have seen renewed scrutiny since the 1990s as abuses
committed against the women condemned to live in the institutions have come to
light. The mother and baby homes sometimes forced mothers to put their children
up for adoption, often to the US, while Magdalene laundries subjected women to
forced labor (usually, as the name implies, washing clothes and linens) and
physical abuse. One mother and baby home, Sean Ross Abbey, was featured in last
year's film Philomena. Last year, the Irish government agreed to compensate
survivors of the Magdalene laundries, while those abused in mother and baby
homes have yet to be compensated, and children of mothers in the homes say they
have been denied access to records.

children born in Ireland and put up for adoption in the United States without

about the conditions that led to the tragedy in Tuam, and what reforms still

did they relate to the mother and baby homes, which the current revelations
concern?
MS:
[Boston College professor and activist] James Smith refers to it as Ireland's
"architecture of containment," and that's exactly what it was. You
had these industrial schools, the Magdalene laundries, the mother and baby
homes, all with different remits, but the basic model was to contain and
segregate anything that was deemed morally inferior by society, whether that's
children, unwed mothers, the women in the Magdalenes, etc. They were all cross
connecting at various points. Children were sent to laundries, women came out
of laundries or went into laundries from mother and baby homes.

It is too

from neglect today who can be saved.

notion that back then, in a dim and distant past, Ireland didn't cherish all of
its children equally is both distressing and reassuring.
We grieve
for the long-dead children of unmarried mothers, who were condemned to a life
of torment for the crime of being born, but salve our consciences with the
knowledge that today things are better.
We tell
ourselves that the callousness and cruelty of the past are interred with the
remains of those children in their tomb.
But for

A leading
consultant forensic scientist says an examination of the skeletal remains of
almost 800 babies found in Tuam could determine how they died.

Nuns in

that oversees the Vatican’s financial watchdog agency, an abrupt move that will
give the financial operation more of an English-speaking focus.
The
Vatican said the pope named five experts from Switzerland, Singapore, the
United States and Italy to replace those who were removed from the board of the
Financial Information Authority (AIF), the Holy See’s internal regulatory
agency.
All five
outgoing members were Italians who had been expected to serve five-year terms
ending in 2016. The sole American on the new board is Juan Zarate, a senior
adviser at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Two of the new five members are Italian.
The pope
has taken a hard line on cleaning up the Vatican finance system, and he had
been urged to appoint professionals with international expertise to work with
the head of the AIF, Rene Bruelhart, a Swiss lawyer. Francis has taken a
personal interest in the scandal-tainted Vatican bank, or Institute for

The
existence of a mass grave, containing a large number of unidentified remains,
and the discovery that up to 796 children may have died at the mother and baby
home run by the Bon Secours order during its period of operation from 1925 to
1961 has received national and international attention in recent weeks.
The site
had previously been considered a graveyard for unbaptised babies or Famine
victims. However, in 1975 two boys had been playing when they discovered
partially broken concrete slabs covering a disused septic tank which was found
to contain bones. It is believed that these remains were those of children
disposed of without proper burial or records of their interment. Research was
later undertaken by local historian and genealogist Catherine Corless through
records in the possession of the Galway County Council revealing the large
number of deaths at the mother and baby home. Ms Corless set up a committee and
a campaign to erect a memorial has gained momentum in recent months.

As this article reveals, the
contempt with which these orphans were treated did not begin the minute they
died. The "Home Babies" were ridiculed and ostracized throughout
their typically short and miserable lives.
And,
apparently, treated with criminal neglect.
A local health board inspection report from April 1944 recorded 271
children and 61 single mothers in residence, a total of 333 in a building that
had a capacity for 243.
The report described the children as “emaciated,” “pot-bellied,”
“fragile” with “flesh hanging loosely on limbs.” The report noted that 31
children in the “sun room and balcony” were “poor, emaciated and not thriving.”
The effects of long term neglect and malnutrition were observed repeatedly.
Children died at The Home at the rate of one a fortnight for almost 40
years, one report claims. Another appears to claim that 300 children died
between 1943 and 1946, which would mean two deaths a week in the isolated
institution. ...
It's a
lesson we have yet to learn, for this is a staggering reality.

writers are pointing out the hypocrisy of pro-life groups that have remained
silent on this crime. "Every sperm is sacred, but apparently not every
two-year-old, in the world of the Irish Catholic Right," notes Bock the

in America, the bishops continue to behave like racketeers when it comes to sex
abuse. In my home town of St. Louis, our archbishop's favorite priest has now
been accused for a second time of sex abuse, and the archbishop's response has
been to smear the alleged victim's parents with a public press release.

Outrage over the reported discovery of the bodies of almost 800 children at a
former home for unmarried mothers run by nuns in Ireland prompted calls
Wednesday for a full investigation.
The
children whose remains have apparently been found in Tuam, in County Galway,
are believed to have died between 1925 and 1961, according to local media
reports.
The grim
discovery was highlighted in a front-page report in the Irish Mail on Sunday,
which cited the efforts of local historian Catherine Corless to research the
burial sites of 796 children listed as having died at the home, which was run
by the Sisters of Bon Secours.
According
to the newspaper, Corless believes their remains are all buried in the unmarked
mass grave next to the place where the home once stood. Local children stumbled
upon the grave in the 1970s, local media reported, but the site was never
examined afterward.

There is
growing pressure on the Government to hold a full historical inquiry into the
deaths of almost 800 children in a mother and baby home in Tuam, Co Galway
between the 1920s and the 1960s.
There
were numerous calls from TDs, Senators and councillors yesterday for a full
inquiry following the disclosure that many infants and children who died in the
home run by the Bon Secours order were buried in an unmarked plot.

for Children Charlie Flanagan said yesterday that he was giving “active
consideration to the best means of addressing the harrowing details emerging
regarding the burial arrangements for children who died many years ago in
mother and baby homes”.

“Many of
the revelations are deeply disturbing and a shocking reminder of a darker past
in Ireland when our children were not cherished as they should have been,” he
said.

They have
no headstones, no coffins. No memory boxes of toys and photographs. There are
nearly eight hundred of them – and counting. They are the 796 babies and young
children aged between two days and nine years whose grave, “filled to the brim
with tiny bones and skulls,” was found last week in an unmarked site that once
housed a septic tank near a County Galway home for unwed mothers.
Local
death records show that the children, mostly babies and toddlers, died during
the years The Home, run by the Bon Secours Sisters, was in operation — between
1926 and 1961. The causes of death listed include “sicknesses, diseases,
deformities and premature births.” A full tally of the bodies has not yet been
made, and it’s unknown yet if investigators will find more bodies than the ones
whose deaths were recorded.
The grave
was first discovered nearly forty years ago. In 1975, two boys playing in the
area first uncovered a broken slab that revealed small skeletons underneath. As
the Guardian reports, “a parish priest said prayers at the site, and it was
sealed once more, the number of bodies below unknown, their names forgotten.”
But more recently, local historian Catherine Corless spearheaded a long overdue
investigation into what happened to the bodies of those children. She was
inspired in part by her own memories of the children from The Home that she
grew up with. “They were always segregated to the side of regular classrooms,”
she recently told Irish Central. “By doing this the nuns telegraphed the
message that they were different and that we should keep away from them. They
didn’t suggest we be nice to them. In fact if you acted up in class some nuns
would threaten to seat you next to the Home Babies. That was the message we got
in our young years.” When Corless contacted the Galway registry to find out how
many children had died there, she said the person at the office asked her, “Do
you really want all of these deaths?” It was only then she learned the
magnitude of her task. She is now fundraising to create a memorial for the

After Joseph Ratzinger publicly announced his plans to retire, quite a few people who are aware of this website or the @Fire_the_PopeTwitter account remarked how I got my wish or, jokingly, how my website may have led to the first resignation of a pope in 600 years.
Yes, I’ve had Ratzinger’s picture prominently displayed on this site and, given his long record both as the pope and as the one person responsible for handling all sex-crime cases in the Church, I strongly believed him to be incompetent at best.
However, FireThePope doesn’t just mean fire Joseph Ratzinger. FireThePope isn’t a cause to bring down one man. FireThePope is an effort to expose the entire Roman Catholic Church, as is, as fraudulent and there is no better way to do that than to start at the top.
Not your Father’s church.
The Roman Catholic Church sets itself apart from all other religions, including Christian denominations, by claiming its head, the pope, is the successor of Peter and that Jesus anointed Peter to be the head of his church. The Church points to Matthew 16:13-20 to support this claim. Catholics conclude the Roman Catholic Church is the “one true church” of Jesus Christ and all other Protestant or non-Roman orthodox churches are inferior to it.
Roman Catholics call their church “the bride of Christ” and “Holy Mother Church”. These nicknames market the idea that Roman Catholicism dates back to the days of Jesus Christ and it – or “She”, as they say – is the very foundation of Christianity and all other religions are mere offshoots or sequels to Roman Catholicism.
Ultimately, Roman Catholicism rests solely on the supremacy of Peter and the apostles. Without the supremacy of Peter, there would be no pope. Without the supremacy of the apostles, there would be no priesthood as the Roman Church defines it. Without the superhuman powers of Catholic priests, bye-bye sacraments, indulgences, and the entire institution.
Today, let’s focus on the papacy. Following are ten reasons why there should never be another pope and, if there is, he should be completely ignored by the Catholic laity, the media, politicians, and the public at large.
Because the Vatican bases its very existence on a scene from the New Testament, it must also accept other verses of the NT in order to be consistent. Either the NT should be accepted as true, non-fictional accounts or not. Either those accounts must be taken literally or not. But, one cannot say this is a source of truth, inspired by the Holy Spirit and then pick and choose which passages the Church wants to follow or not.
1. The church of Jesus Christ in the bible was not a physical empire. Matthew 24:1-2 - ”Jesus left the temple precincts then, and his disciples came up and pointed out to him the buildings of the temple area. His comment was: ‘Do you see all these buildings? I assure you, not one stone will be left on another – it will all be torn down.’” 1 Corinthians 3:16 – “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the spirit of God dwells in you?” Also, Peter 2:5-9 – “Be yourselves as living stones built into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Jesus preached in homes and on hillsides, not in buildings. He only went in to temples to draw people out of them or to scold the church leaders. The word catholic, found in the bible with a lower-case c, means universal. In the first century, the wordchurch (also lower-case c) meant a society of men, women, and children who are spiritually – not necessarily physically – united to serve God. According to the NT, Jesus established the catholic church – a universal society of believers who would offer spiritualsacrifices. I explain below who really instituted the Roman Catholic Church, which requires material (pagan) sacrifices.
2. The church of Jesus Christ was not built upon one man. The idea that the church of Jesus was built upon one man is preposterous. Yet, that is what the Roman Church claims. Its only foundation is the notion that Peter was chosen by Jesus to be the first pope and that all popes are Peter’s successors, chosen by the Holy Spirit and infallible in all of their declarations. Roman Catholicism teaches that the pope, acting on behalf of the Church (notice the capital C indicating the Corporation) has the power and a duty to act as a mediator between the Creator and his creatures. It has been a long-held tradition that the Vatican, the Magisterium, and the clergy would interpret the bible for the laity. However, 1 Corinthians 3:11 reads, “For other foundation no one can lay, but that which has been laid, which is Jesus Christ”. According to scripture, Jesus, not Peter, is the foundation of the Christian church. Jesus is also the sole mediator, so says 1 Timothy 2:5: ”And the truth is this: ‘God is one. One also is the mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, and who gave himself ransom for all.” According to the New Testament where Catholics turn to justify the existence of their Church, there is only one mediator between God and the people and that is Jesus Christ, not Peter and not Joseph Ratzinger.
3. The church of Jesus Christ in the bible did not have a pope.The word pope is not in the bible, where the Roman Church points to as justification for itself. The early church described in the New Testament speaks of bishops who were overseers or local supervisors of the effort to spread Christianity. They were not rulers over the people. No one bishop had authority over any other. No one bishop was the head of the effort. There was a bishop in many major cities, including one in Rome. It so happened that certain Roman emperors (namely Constantine and Charlemagne) elevated the position and authority of the bishop of Rome, specifically, because they had the power to do so and because it was convenient as Rome was the seat of power. Emperors appointed bishops and abbots and usually appointed members of aristocratic families. The idea of a pope – one bishop over all others – was a corrupt power grab by murderous dictators and had nothing to do with Jesus Christ or anything in the bible.
4. The Peter of the throne was not the apostle but an impostor. Remember, the apostle Peter originally went by the name of Simon. Then, he was referred to as Simon Peter. Jesus named him Peter at the rock because the name Peter – or Petros (Greek) means rock. This Peter was from Cyprus, according to the bible. But, there is another Simon in the bible, this one from Samaria and he was a troublemaker. Locals called him Simon the

Magician. He claimed to be able to do magic tricks and held The Circus of Nero in Vaticanus Hill. Simon Magnus claimed he was God (hence, the magic) and he became a nemesis, a rival, and a thorn in the side of the apostle Peter. There was such trouble between the two that Emperor Nero set up a contest to settle their differences. Simon Magnus was killed after being thrown from his chariot and so Nero, who had favored him, had Peter arrested and thrown in jail. If there was a pope on a throne in the days of the early church, it was not Peter the Apostle but Simon the Magician. Simon sat on a throne; Peter never did. Simon claimed to be God; Peter never did. Simon claimed to have supernatural powers; Peter never did. Simon Magnus even started going by the name Peter in order to confuse people. They both had the same name, they both died in the same year – 67 A.D., and they both had spent time in Rome. The proof that the Simon of Samaria, not Cyprus, sat on the throne in Rome is the documentation that Magnus stayed in Rome for many years at a time while the apostle came and went quite often.
5. The apostle Peter never considered himself God or Jesus Christ. Again, the idea of the papacy rests on the supremacy of Peter. The Roman Church claims the pope is “Christ’s (sole) representative on earth”. The Peter whom the popes are supposed to have succeeded was married with at least one child – a daughter. He never sat on a throne and he never claimed to have magic powers or to be infallible. He never claimed to be better or more important than the other apostles or early leaders of the Christian church. He never dressed in fancy clothes, he never wore a ring to be kissed, and he never insisted on the red carpet treatment. Acts 10:25-27: “As Peter entered, Cornelius went to meet him, dropped to his knees before him and bowed low. Peter said, ‘Get up! I am only a man myself.’” When Nero sentenced Peter to death by crucifixion, Peter insisted on hanging on the cross upside down because he was unworthy to die as Jesus died. Peter the apostle, claimed by the Church as the first pope was never a pope and his philosophy and practices, according to the New Testament, were a far contrast to those of the papacy no matter who is holding the title.
6. The Roman Catholic Church was not established until the 4th Century. Roman Catholics claim Peter of the bible was the first pope and that there is an unbroken line of popes stretching from biblical times to present-day. This claim is nothing but a re-writing of history. The Church needs that lineage in order to justify itself and the papacy yet it does not have the facts on its side so they have to create a new reality. What the Church

has done is go back and list anyone who was a bishop of Rome as a pope. The actual papacy didn’t begin until the Roman Catholic Church began and that wasn’t until the 4th Century with Pope Constantine I – the emperor – who ruled from the “chair of St. Peter” from 306-337. Constantine came to the rescue of Christians who were being persecuted by Emperor Diocletian. It’s not that he was overcome by compassion but realized he could take political advantage from the growing number of Christians. This ties the pagan Roman Empire to the Catholic Church whose members also worship objects and offer material sacrifices.
7. The papacy was on life support as recently as 1870. In the mid-19th Century, there was an effort to unify Italy which was split in two by the Papal States governed by the pope, then Pope Pius IX (the one who dreamed up Immaculate Conception). Victor Emmanuel II, the new King of Italy, had seized all of the Church-controlled territory except a small segment of Rome. Napoleon, who had previously been an ally of Emmanuel, protected the pope and by having some of his troops stand guard at the Vatican. When the Franco-Prussia War intensified, Napoleon pulled his troops out of Rome, leaving the pope defenseless. The Italian troops moved in and the pope lost all of his temporal (civil) power minus rule over the tiny territory of the Vatican. Emmanuel allowed the pope to keep the Vatican and freed him from Italian rule but the pope was defiant. Pius IX refused to recognize Emmanuel’s new kingdom and he voluntarily kept himself a prisoner of the Vatican. He cried anti-Catholic bias until support and donations poured in for him, including from Catholics in America. The empire of the Roman Church was all but lost in 1870. It took more deception to keep it alive.
8. The papacy was corruptly propped back up by a fascist dictator. In the 1920′s, the Italian government wished to settle its differences with the Church. At the time, the Prime Minister of Italy was Benito Mussolini.

He conspired with the Vatican to shut out populist factions in the country in order to amass more power and control for himself. The Vatican silenced priests who favored a more democratic government. Does it matter than the majority of Catholics were entered into the Church before the age of reason? Catholics are quick to remind us of “all the good the Church does”. There isn’t a tyrant in history that couldn’t claim the same. Evil almost always presents itself in disguise – as something good. When deception is the foundation of an institution, no amount of superficial acts that come out of it can make it good. Deeds and institutions can only be good if they are based in truth. Like it or not, the spirit that is guiding the Roman Catholic Church isn’t holy, it is evil. And the only way to kill a serpent is by chopping off its head.

There’s an elephant quietly sitting in the nave that everyone on all sides of the clergy sex abuse crisis have been diligently ignoring, even the victims themselves. No clergy or even would-be reformers have really remarked on it yet, although it should be more obvious with each and every sad story. More importantly, it is a troubling issue that touches on the very heart and soul of Catholicism.
The monstrous truth is simply this: what the clergy sex abuse crisis clearly demonstrates is that the sacramental system has failed.
This is not just a case of hierarchical reneging of responsibility.There’s more to this than some bad apples. This is nothing that a few reforms can fix, some screening of seminarians or more pastoral responses by bishops. It is nothing less than a fundamental challenge to the entire Catholic Church, and it shows that the spiritual principles the whole structure is supposedly based on simply do not work.
Think about it. The offenders here are Roman Catholic priests, highly trained men. But unlike other professionals, these men are supposedly set apart and dedicated to lives of the spirit. They claim to have the power to forgive sins and make God appear.
They not only administer the sacraments to others, but also receive them themselves daily. That means, among other things, frequent confession to other priests. Moreover, many of these men belong to religious orders or are otherwise under close spiritual direction. They are supposed to confide everything to their confessors and superiors and to obey them unquestioningly.
So what went wrong? When an abusive priest goes to confession, does he start, “Bless me, father, for I have sinned: I buggered an altar boy three times this week”? And does the confessor tell him to say 3 Our Fathers and 4 Hail Marys and not to do it again?
According to their own theory, confessors have the power to forgive sins, but also to refuse to do so if sorrow is insufficient. Moreover, they are to appoint penances – if they wish, they can require satisfaction or significant signs of reform from the penitent before absolution. Some sins – such as solicitation for sex in the confessional – are even deemed so serious that only higher prelates, sometimes only the Pope or his appointed delegate can forgive them.
Yet the abusers continue to abuse. So are the sexually active priestslying to their confessors? This would mean that not only do the perpetrating priests remain in a state of mortal sin and are automatically excommunicated, they perform the sacraments in that state which is itself a grave sacrilege.
Or, even worse, are all the abusive priests linked? Do they only go to confession to like-minded perps who will understand? Is there then an organized network of sexually perpetrating priests, all busily enabling each other? This adds collusion and conspiracy to the sinand would indicate that the very structure itself is rotten to the core.
The evidence available suggests that perhaps both scenarios are true to varying degrees in different situations. Either way, however, the result is much the same.
The sacraments are meant to unite believers with Christ. Not just to remove the accumulations of sin like the weekly laundry, but togradually improve the recipient. They are intended to sanctify and uplift the faithful, increase devotion to God, charity to fellow humans, and moral stamina in the face of evil.
If the sacraments actually worked like this, wouldn’t we hear ennobling stories of clerical reform, of some molester inspired to truly repent and devote himself to the cause? But rather, the stories are depressingly the same, of priests caught time and again, transferred, treated, and now finally, laicized often against their will, with no regret or even acknowledgement of their evil.
What this means, each person must decide in their own conscience. But perhaps the fall off in confessions over the years itself tells the story. Why should anyone, lay or not, risk a ritual that seems so impotent in promoting reform and may, instead of granting grace, actually expose them to greater human wickedness?
