Important ecclesial events, like a papal visit, are often organized in such a way that they too produce a feeling of unreality. In the Pope’s 1996 visit to El Salvador, it is true that most of the people who attended were poor. But all one could see of their reality was their religious enthusiasm, more or less effectively organized. One didn’t see their poverty, their fears, their discouragement and helplessness, not even their true faith and hope; one didn’t see their reality. As the event was organized, the poor served more as a backdrop than as the reality of the country; in the foreground were minorities that do not represent the reality: the government, legislators and politicians, the rich and powerful, and the Church beside them. The Pope’s visit neither reflected reality nor, to judge from the consequences, had any important effect on it.
On page 140. This applies to the allocutions and homilies of the Pope to the Congregation when he was an "adult-pope’. And that is still a serious problem: humanistas without sarx, factuality without reality (in the world of the poor). To give a few examples: one often gets a feeling of unreality from homilies, documents and messages that do not make central - although they may mention it - the poverty of reality, the injustice and corruption that cause it, and the cover-up that accompanies it. The feeling of unreality comes especially from the lack of commitment to get involved in the conflict, to struggle against injustice and to suffer the consequences. Words, words, words, as J. Comblin calls such messages in the article mentioned above. At another level, one gets the same feeling of unreality from a seminary formation that protects the seminarian from reality; or from the spiritualities and pastoral practices promoted or tolerated by movements that lead the human being into an a-historical transcendence with infantilizing consequences. Pope John Paul II was a popular figure in Mexico and local Catholic Church leaders have lauded current Pope Benedict XVI’s decision to beatify him on May 1. But not everyone is happy.The Mexican-run group Observatorio Eclesial (Ecclesiastic Observatory) is mounting a worldwide campaign against the decision, entitled “A call to clarity.”

The group alleges that Pope John Paul II failed to recognize and possibly even covered up abuses that the founder and leader of the Legionaries of Christ in Mexico, Marcial Maciel, carried out during his tenure. Maciel is accused of abusing numerous young boys over a period stretching from the 1950s until the 1990s, fathering children and of consecrating 900 women as nuns, without the Vatican’s knowledge.
John Paul was said to be close to Maciel and encouraged him in expanding the Legionaries of Christ. The Ecclesiastic Observatory is hoping to get “contrary testimonies” to the beatification of Polish Pope John Paul II.
The other major point of contention the group has to the Pope’s beatification is his flat-out rejection of Liberation Theology, postulated by priests such as Ernesto Cardenal in Central America.
Cardenal this week criticized the beatification and accused John Paul II of “protecting” people accused of pedophilia.

The Eucharist will live only if we find a way for it to live outside the Mass.
Another sister told me this about a decade ago: The hierarchy is like a dying dragon, breathing fire on those around it as it flails through its final collapse. But don’t worry, she said, it is dying and someday something else will resurrect.
I believe both of those statements, I love both of those sisters, and the recent news about the Vatican
I am not shocked by the Vatican
Even more than a dragon, the church hierarchy looks to me like a senile old man, babbling, impotent and chastising anyone within earshot. What I struggle to understand is why anyone with a congruent perspective still listens to the old man. Why do thinking Catholics become outraged by the absurd actions of a hierarchy that holds little moral or practical authority in the world?
We live in a unique historical moment in which the ecological balance of the planet is endangered. Biodiversity is dwindling. The waters are sick. Cultures are increasingly homogenized. As our planetary community experiences trauma, our human-made systems persist in endangering the lives of our descendants. Many are waking up to this state of affairs, and across the Earth revolutions are challenging destructive power structures.
Meanwhile the Catholic community, too often lost in an abyss of irrelevance, argues about the language of the Mass, radical feminism and other obsessions of the Vatican
As a body of people, we reveal ourselves to be sorrowfully distracted. The hierarchy wastes its energy trying to rein in American prophets and elevate a top-down spiritual path. The people in the pews follow their lead, either reconciling their lives with the strange demands of the robed men or else simmering with frustration over how absurd those demands are. Either way, it’s all a waste, all a distraction, and Catholicism’s irrelevance grows.
This, at least, is how it looks to me -- not a theologian, leader or representative of anyone, but simply a 31-year-old American who loves the Catholic community and tradition, though connects with its formal expressions less and less.
To many, I would not be considered Catholic, primarily because I have shed the institutional Mass as a weekly practice. I’m certainly not Catholic in the way elder generations have been, nor in the way my more conservative young friends are. But I still experience a deep inner bond with Catholicism, I draw on the community and tradition in my prayer life, and I identify as Catholic.
As an adult, my strongest experience of Catholicism has been with the good sisters and those who gather around them. I believe the sisters have as much to offer us non-churchgoers -- both Catholic and non-Catholic -- as they do to offer churchgoers. If my wife and I have children, we will be intentional about fostering relationships between them and the sisters we know.
My experience of Catholicism, then, is relational; the institutional dimension of the church, represented by the hierarchy of priests, fades more and more from my experience. From where I stand, it is clear to me that if Catholicism is to thrive as a cultural force beyond its own echo chamber, at least some Catholics must not only realize that the hierarchy is a fading ghost, but live in a way that responds to this reality. For example, instead of venting our frustration to each other about the Vatican

Vine Deloria Jr., the late Native American scholar, wrote that “institutions and beliefs are rapidly eroding” in our world and “the religions that depend on the articulation of doctrinal propositions to maintain themselves are doomed to disappear beneath their own silliness. Those religious traditions that depend primarily upon invoking some kind of experience that is qualitatively distinct from everyday feelings will become the vehicles for religious expression in the future.”
In these words, I believe, you have a hint as to where Catholicism could shift if Catholics choose. The religious communities of sisters would be natural leaders in this.
Those, like me, who love the sisters know that their charisms -- their spiritual energies in our lives and the life of the Earth community -- will persist, transform, perhaps die and resurrect but certainly continue far into the future, as long as humans exist. What we encounter in them as individual women and as religious communities shows us their spirit is authentic. They lead us into the profound realms of experience, and we know that no matter what the Vatican

The week-long ceremony will focus on the theme of “Communion” - a central concept of the Second Vatican Council, in 160 workshops, talks, discussions, group reflections. It will showcase Irish spirituality and culture in over 100 stands, and celebrate it with a rich contribution of Irish song and music.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, who has given courageous leadership in dealing with this scandal, is hosting the Congress. He said he hopes that, like its 1932 predecessor, it too will contribute to promoting “reconciliation” within the Catholic Church and people in this green island, and foster a much needed “renewal” of the Church in this land once known as “the island of saints and scholars”.
On the eve of the Congress, Archbishop Martin took a step in the direction of renewal by ordaining the country’s first permanent deacons, eight for the archdiocese of Dublin 409 in 1964 to a mere 6 in 2011. In 1932 there were 10 seminaries, today there are 3, including the one in Rome
At the same time, however, as an Irish Times survey taken on the eve of the Congress has shown, notwithstanding the terrible impact of the sex-abuse of children by clergy scandal and the onward advance of secularization in the Irish Republic (where 84% of the people define themselves as Catholic), some 31% of people attend mass weekly, another 8% do so every two weeks, while a further 20% attend at least every three months, and many more go once a year or more. This rate of Church attendance is higher than in most other European countries, and offers the basis for hope of renewal in the Irish Church
This 50th Eucharistic Congress is being held against such a background, and in the midst of a harsh economic crisis that has hit the island very hard. The Congress will conclude on Sunday, June 17.

The Healing Stone, which was unveiled at the opening ceremony of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress, is to go on permanent display in Lough Derg.
Fr Lawrence Flynn from the Diocese of Clogher expressed delight that the stone of Wicklow granite, which is inscribed with a survivor's prayer, would be moved to the Lough Derg after the Congress ends on Sunday.
He said while the stone needs to be accessible, it should be housed in a reflective and contemplative space.
The stone will go to Station Island initially before a decision is made on its permanent location.
Yesterday, Primate of All Ireland and Archbishop of Armagh Seán Brady said he hoped the stone might become a symbol of conversion, healing and hope and of a Church that has learned from the mistakes of the past.

He said while the stone needs to be accessible, it should be housed in a reflective and contemplative space.
The stone will go to Station Island initially before a decision is made on its permanent location.
Yesterday, Primate of All Ireland and Archbishop of Armagh Seán Brady said he hoped the stone might become a symbol of conversion, healing and hope and of a Church that has learned from the mistakes of the past.

Pope Benedict XVI chalks up abuse of children to 'mystery'

Pope Benedict XVI added a new mystery to the Catholic faith last Sunday.
Speaking about the abuse of children by priests and other religious figures, the Pontiff said, “How are we to explain the fact that people who regularly received the Lord’s body and confessed their sins in the Sacrament of Penance have offended in this way? It remains a mystery.”
The papal comments were made in a recorded TV address delivered at the close of an outdoor Mass attended by 75,000 Catholics, many from overseas, in Ireland's largest sports stadium. Ireland's prime minister and president attended the Mass, the final event of a Eucharistic Congress aimed at shoring up flagging faith.
Not everyone agreed with the Pope.
"The pontiff's wrong: there's little mystery here," said Barbara Dorris in an emailed statement reported by the Associated Press.
