Berrios, in the photo of his Facebook profile appears taking the hand of the late Pope John Paul II  had been relieved of his duties by the diocese of Caguas, a city neighboring San Juan.  He is accused of sexually abusing an altar boy and faces a minimum of 10 years in jail if found guilty. 4.  Australia, on May 8^th,  Abuse lawyer notes announcement from Christian Brothers on unjust compensation payments.  The Royal Commission into child sex abuse is currently sitting in Perth, Australia and is looking into possible abuse carried out in children’s’ homes run by the Christian Brothers. Many British child migrants who were sent to Australia and other Commonwealth countries over many decades lived in homes run by the Brothers, and many of them suffered appalling abuse. 5.  USA & India – On May 14th - a Catholic priest from India - who previously worked with the Archdiocese of Winona, Minnesota Leo Charles Koppala, 48, was escorted by officers of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) on a commercial flight and turned over to Indian authorities on May 14 in New Delhi -   following his conviction for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old.  See news compilation below. 
6.  Seattle, Washington, USA, on May 9th – a cleric of the Christian Brothers who abused more than 50 victims may settle soon.  SNAP announced: “Over two decades from coast to coast, Br. Courtney was a principal, teacher and coach in ten schools (in New York, Nevada and Washington state) and is believed to be living now in Honolulu. We strongly suspect that neither Br. 7.  Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, on May 14^th , 57-year old Gabriele DelBianco, a former Catholic priest, is sentenced to 4 year in federal prison - he was found guilty of three of 18 charges against him involving four teenage girls during the 1980′s while in  priesthood.  See news compilation below.

8.   Fall River, Massachusetts May 13th - Two men have filed a lawsuit against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fall River and then-Bishop Daniel Cronin for allegedly failing to prevent a priest from sexually abusing them when they were altar boys. The Child Victims Act has given survivors the chance to get justice. To come out into the light and recover for their losses. As the cases have come forward and discovery has uncovered information, the comparison to what has happened to the offending priests is so very troubling. These men belong in prison.
Instead , the evidence continues to mount that they have almost been rewarded. Rev. Gil Gustafson has been disclosed as a credibly accused priest. He was one of the few who were actually charged as he was sentenced to six months in jail and a $40 fine. He was incarcerated for about 41/2 months.
According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, after jail he went back to the church and has benefited as:
The church continued his priestly salary and health insurance, covered his living expenses and psychological treatment, and paid for his education and training, according to church records and a former archdiocese accountant. It has given him jobs in the chancery, helped him establish his own consulting business, and steered clients his way.
He lives in a bungalow in West St. Paul. The story goes on to tell the story of what happened to one of the children that he abused:
The years of abuse “mentally and physically destroyed him,” Herrity said. Classmates at Hill-Murray School mocked him after he went public with his abuse, his father said. He began a descent down a “path of destruction” that included drug abuse and promiscuity and ended in his death of complications from AIDS at age 28, in 1995.

Italian victims of priest sex abuse appeal to pope

VATICAN CITY -- Italian victims of priestly sex abuse appealed directly to Pope Francis for justice Friday, calling for a commission of inquiry into the problem in the Vatican's backyard.
In letters and a video posted online, 17 survivors denounced the treatment they have received by the Italian Catholic Church and the Vatican itself. Half of them are former students of a notorious school for the deaf in Verona where hundreds of children are believed to have been sexually assaulted over the years by two dozen priests and religious brothers.
The "Abuse Network" organization, one of the most active in Italy, said it sent a copy of the video to the Vatican's deputy secretary of state, Monsignor Angelo Becciu, addressed to the pope. There was no comment Friday from the Vatican on whether it had been received or viewed.
In a letter to Francis sent last month, the Verona deaf victims called for a commission of inquiry to be set up as has been done in Ireland and Australia to investigate the depths of the scandal in Italy.
The Abuse Network has posted online the names of some 150 Italian priests it says have been convicted by Italian courts since 2000 for abuse-related crimes in a bid to show that the problem is very real in Italy. Yet the Italian bishops' conference has been slow to respond to the problem and only this year released Vatican-mandated guidelines for how to protect children.

(ANSA) - Rome, May 9 - An organization of survivors of child sexual abuse at the hands of Catholic priests has sent Pope Francis a videotaped appeal for justice and compensation, La Repubblica newspaper reported Friday.
The organization called Rete l'Abuso (Abuse Network) made the video featuring dozens of adult survivors of child sexual abuse in religious institutions. Among them are eight deaf-mute people who were enrolled at the Antonio Provolo religious institute for disabled children in the northern city of Verona, where some 25 priests abused at least 100 victims from the mid-1950s to the mid-1990s. In a 2011 letter, an association of adult survivors of the abuse at Provolo wrote to then-pope Benedict XVI, asking him to deconsecrate three churches they said they were sexually assaulted in as children.
In their video message, the victims call on Francis for compensation, because the crimes committed against them have long since timed out under Italian law.
In a Wednesday hearing in Geneva, Vatican UN Ambassador Silvano Tomasi told the UN Committee on the Convention against Torture that since 1950, the Holy See has paid sex-abuse victims a total of $2.5 billion in damages and $78 million to pay for therapy. The Abuse Network in February called on the Vatican to declassify its archives on pedophile priests so they can be turned over to public prosecutors.
On its website, it has published a list of 148 convicted child-molesting priests, as well as a map of Italy detailing all the parishes where child abuse allegations have surfaced.

VATICAN CITY, May 9 (UPI) --Pope Francis has been sent a video made by victims of child sex abuse at the hands of priests, calling for sympathy and compensation.
The Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported Friday the Rete l'Abuso (Abuse Network) organization produced the video, which presents several dozen adult victims of child sex abuse. They include eight deaf and mute people who were enrolled in a school in Verona, where 25 priests abused at least 100 students from the 1950s to the 1990s.
Those in the video call on the pope for compensation, noting the statute of limitations for prosecution under Italian law has expired.
The organization's website identifies 148 priests convicted of child molestation, and a map of Italy detailing the Catholic parishes where the crimes occurred.

We are deeply impressed by the courage and moved by the pain of the dozens of Italian clergy sex abuse victims who are part of a just-released YouTube video message to Pope Francis. For the safety of the vulnerable and the healing of the suffering, we endorse their call to Vatican officials to release long-secret church records about clerics who commit and conceal heinous sexual violence against children.

It's hard for a victim of sexual violence to speak about their suffering. It's often harder when the perpetrator is a powerful church official. And it's often harder still to do so publicly, revealing one's name and face. So we applaud these wounded, but obviously caring individuals for having the strength.
We hope their video prompts many others – Catholics and non-Catholics – to offer these gutsy, pained individuals the sympathy and love they so richly deserve. They clearly have been hurt, are still hurt, and should be treated with extraordinary kindness and gratitude for their work in exposing – and hopefully preventing - these dreadful crimes. We also hope their video prods others who saw, suspected or suffered clergy sexual violence and cover ups to speak up, get help, expose wrongdoers, and protect kids. Silence endangers kids and helps predators. Stepping forward helps kids and exposes those who commit and conceal heinous child sex crimes.
At the same time, however, we urge these brave men and women to stay focused on healing and prevention without expecting or waiting for any positive response from Catholic officials. In our 25 years of experience, we've learned that we do, in fact, have the capacity to recover from the trauma we suffered as innocent children and vulnerable adults at the hands of Catholic clerics. And we can recover from the added trauma we suffered as brave adults when we sought help from church officials. It helps when church officials don't ignore or re-victimize us. But often, that's precisely what they do. Still, we can get better without them and that's what we hope these courageous Italian survivors are doing.

È questa la richiesta contenuta nel video-messaggio che Rete L'Abuso, l'associazione italiana in difesa delle vittime di pedofilia nella Chiesa Cattolica, ha consegnato a Papa Francesco poche ore fa in Vaticano. In questo video parlano alcune delle vittime di abusi sessuali emersi negli ultimi anni, tra cui il caso recentissimo di Giada, la ragazza diciottenne di Portocannone in provincia di Campobasso che dopo aver denunciato il suo parroco si è ritrovata contro gli abitanti del suo paese che la accusano di essersi inventata tutto.
A chiudere il videomessaggio sono otto vittime dell'Istituto per Sordomuti Provolo di Verona, gravissimo caso esploso nel 2009 dopo un'inchiesta dell'Espresso e che ebbe molta risonanza anche all'estero. Si parlò di oltre 25 religiosi coinvolti e più di cento vittime abusate dalla metà degli anni '50 fino alla metà degli anni '90. Venne anche istituita una commissione d'inchiesta vaticana che confermò gli abusi, ma per la legge italiana quasi tutti i reati erano ormai prescritti e le vittime non sono mai state risarcite. "Non vogliamo sfidare nessuno", spiega Francesco Zanardi portavoce di Rete L'Abuso "ma abbiamo voluto far parlare le vittime, alcune giovanissime, perché si raccontasse la verità su di loro: nessuno le ha ascoltate, nessuno le ha risarcite sono state lasciate sole. I media amano questo nuovo Papa noi gli chiedano: Perché non ci ascolti?"

Pedophile priest victims send pope a video message

Rome - An organization of survivors of child sexual abuse at the hands of Catholic priests has sent Pope Francis a videotaped appeal for justice and compensation, La Repubblica newspaper reported Friday. The organization called Rete l'Abuso (Abuse Network) made the video featuring dozens of adult survivors of child sexual abuse in religious institutions. Among them are eight deaf-mute people who were enrolled at the Antonio Provolo religious institute for disabled children in the northern city of Verona, where some 25 priests abused at least 100 victims from the mid-1950s to the mid-1990s. In a 2011 letter, an association of adult survivors of the abuse at Provolo wrote to then-pope Benedict XVI, asking him to deconsecrate three churches they said they were sexually assaulted in as children. In their video message, the victims call on Francis for compensation, because the crimes committed against them have long since timed out under Italian law. In a Wednesday hearing in Geneva, Vatican UN Ambassador Silvano Tomasi told the UN Committee on the Convention against Torture that since 1950, the Holy See has paid sex-abuse victims a total of $2.5 billion in damages and $78 million to pay for therapy.

US federal authorities in Puerto Rico have arrested a Roman Catholic priest on charges of sexual abuse of minors.
Israel Berrios, 58, is the first priest to be detained over charges of this kind in Puerto Rico, a US territory.
He is accused of sexually abusing an altar boy and faces a minimum of 10 years in jail if found guilty.
His arrest is part of a wider investigation into sexual abuse allegations by several priests in the Caribbean island.
Puerto Rico Justice Secretary Cesar Miranda alleged Mr Berrios initially gave money, a computer and a camera to the boy, who is now 21, and also took him on a cruise.

SAN JUAN - U.S. authorities on Tuesday arrested a 58-year-old Catholic priest in Puerto Rico on child sexual abuse charges, marking the first such detention in the U.S. territory by federal officials.
Israel Berrios was taken into custody at a relative's home in the rural town of Naranjito, said Ivan Ortiz, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Berrios was arrested after a federal grand jury delivered four charges against him for sexual trafficking of minors and transportation of a minor with the intention of involving the minor in an illicit sexual act, Ortiz said.
Berrios faces a sentence from 10 years to life in prison. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
Bishop Ruben Gonzalez, who heads the Caguas Diocese where Berrios worked, said he cooperated with authorities in the case after receiving the original complaint early last year.

A Puerto Rican priest was arrested on federal sexual abuse charges involving children. We are grateful that law enforcement officials are taking serious action to protect children.

Fr. Israel Berrios, from the Diocese of Caguas, is charged with sexually trafficking minors. This is reportedly the first federal case of its kind in Puerto Rico. We hope this signals a new vigor in holding predators accountable and protecting children.
We are grateful to the brave victims who came forward and worked with federal investigators. We urge Catholic church officials in Puerto Rico to aggressively reach out to anyone who saw, suspected, or suffered child sex crimes. They should also post the names, photos, and work histories of all credibly accused child molesting clergy.

Un cura católico puertorriqueño detenido por tráfico sexual y pedofilia

San Juan -- Un sacerdote católico puertorriqueño fue detenido el martes por agentes de la Oficina federal de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) por cuatro cargos relacionados con tráfico sexual de menores y pedofilia.
Así lo confirmó el portavoz del Departamento de Justicia de Puerto Rico, Miguel Pereira, quien añadió que el religioso, identificado como Israel Berríos Berríos, de 58 años, fue detenido en su residencia en Naranjito, pueblo de la zona central de la isla.
Berríos Berríos, quien en la foto del perfil de su cuenta de Facebook aparece dándole la mano al fenecido papa Juan Pablo II, había sido relevado de sus funciones por la Diócesis de Caguas, ciudad aledaña a San Juan, mientras era investigado por delitos similares.
Se trata de la primera detención federal de un cura en Puerto Rico, y se espera que las autoridades estatales también formalicen una acusación, lo que lo convertiría en el segundo sacerdote acusado en este ámbito.

El sacerdote suspendido, Israel Berríos Berríos, quien en la mañana de este martes fue arrestado por las autoridades federales, firmó una declaración en la que aceptó haber cometido un acto de pedofilia mientras era párroco de la iglesia San José de Aibonito, donde ocurrieron los hechos.
Así lo reveló a este diario el obispo de Caguas, Rubén González. “Tenemos certeza moral de que el hecho se cometió. El mismo sacerdote lo admitió”, sostuvo el líder de la Diócesis de Arecibo.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — U.S. authorities in Puerto Rico said Tuesday they have arrested a Roman Catholic priest on charges including sexual trafficking of minors in the first federal case of its kind in the U.S. territory.
Ivan Ortiz, spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said 58-year-old Israel Berrios was a priest in the Diocese of Caguas, south of the capital of San Juan. He said the priest was arrested in the northern town of Naranjito.
Ortiz said the investigation is ongoing and that more arrests are possible. Authorities have not yet given details of the case.
Puerto Rico prosecutors also filed charges of lewd acts against Berrios.

Child sex cases against a Catholic cleric who molested more than 50 kids – and who worked at several Seattle area schools – are expected to settle soon.

We urge Seattle Archbishop Peter Sartain to aggressively spread the word about his crimes and beg anyone who saw, suspected or suffered them to call police. Specifically, we beg Sartain to put notices in parish bulletins and on church websites prodding victims, witnesses and whistleblowers to call police so that the cleric might be charged, convicted and kept away from kids.
The cleric, Brother Edward Courtney, belongs to a Catholic religious order, the New Rochelle, New York based Christian Brothers.
We urge Christian Brothers officials to explain and apologize for “paying Courtney’s way at (a university” to earn accreditation as a school principal” and writing “letters of recommendation on his behalf” even after they'd received multiple credible abuse reports against him (according to Seattle Weekly).
Over two decades from coast to coast, Br. Courtney was a principal, teacher and coach in ten schools (in New York, Nevada and Washington state) and is believed to be living now in Honolulu. We strongly suspect that neither Br. Courtney's neighbors nor his family really know the truth about him, so he could well be molesting kids even now.

Lawsuit: Archdiocese created culture of sex abuse

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) — Two men are taking on two Albuquerque catholic churches and the Archdiocese of Santa Fe in a set of new lawsuits that accuse the church of allowing a culture of sexual abuse that lasted for decades.
The lawsuit specifically names the Queen of Heaven and Lady of Guadalupe parishes in Albuquerque where the two men say they were raped in the 60′s and 80′s.
But the men also claim that the Archdiocese knew they and other boys were at risk but did nothing to prevent abuse.
Lawsuits over priest sex abuse claims are nothing new for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe but attorney Brad Hall hopes two lawsuits he’s filed on behalf of two men will address what he calls a “bigger picture.”
“We’re saying they knew or should have known that something was going on and done something to stop it sooner,” said Hall.

Man who accused priest of sexual abuse shares his story

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The man who says a Kentucky priest molested him as a child is sharing his story days after another man came forward saying he was sexually abused by the same priest.
Father Joseph Hemmerle has been placed on administrative leave as lead pastor from two Marion County churches since this second accusation.
Michael Norris is a Louisville native who now lives in Houston and works as a chemical engineer. Late last week he found out another man has come forward accusing Father Joseph Hemmerle of sexual abuse.
"The church confirmed to me that the victim was abused at Camp Tall Trees, which is the same place I was abused so quite honestly that place was open for probably 30 years, we're not the only two, I'm sure there are more," said Norris.
Norris said he attended Camp Tall Trees in Meade County when he was 11. He said he got a bad case of poison ivy and Hemmerle told him he could help.

Child protection review severly critical of Divine Word

The fact that no child safeguarding case management files existed in the Divine Word (SVD) missionary congregation prior to 2013 “is of great concern and indicates a lack of any focus on child protection within the society over the last 20 years,” the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland (NBSCCCI) review has found.”Case files were constructed by the society in advance of the review taking place,” it said.
The existence of child safeguarding case management files within the congregation “can only be traced back to the beginning of 2013,” it said. “A lot of documentation was either never generated, or was removed or destroyed by parties unknown, or was kept in some file or files the existence of which has not yet been discovered.” it said.
It said it was “not acceptable that any Church authority in Ireland would have waited until 2012 to begin the process of implementing accepted and agreed Church child safeguarding policies, procedures and practices and while there may be explanations offered for this state of affairs, there are no excuses for it.”
It also described as “ truly unfortunate and a great injustice that it is almost impossible to identify the victims of historical child sexual abuse who live in developing countries and whose abuse took place many years ago.
“The behaviour of the few SVD members who perpetrated this abuse has severely undermined the integrity of a Christian brotherhood that aspires to bring the Good News to people who have not yet heard it,” it said.

Ex-Archbishop Cronin Named In Suit Accusing Priest

Former Hartford Archbishop Daniel Cronin is being sued by two men who say he was negligent in his supervision of a Massachusetts priest who allegedly molested the pair 30 years ago.
The plaintiffs, former alter boys who are now in their 40s, say they were abused from 1979 through the mid-80s by Monsignor Maurice Souza, who served as pastor of St. Anthony's Parish in East Falmouth, Mass. At the time, Cronin was bishop of the Diocese of Fall River, which included St. Anthony's
The suit does not claim that Cronin was aware of the alleged abuse, but says that as Souza's supervisor, he had a "duty to evaluate whether Monsignor Souza posed an unreasonable risk of harm to minors."

2 new sex abuse lawsuits filed against Archdiocese of Santa Fe

An Albuquerque law firm on Wednesday filed two new child sex abuse lawsuits against the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.
The lawsuits point to two specific cases of alleged abuse involving two priests at churches in Albuquerque: Queen of Heaven Parish and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish.
The lawsuits are filed on behalf of two men who say they were abused in the late 1960s and in 1986. The lawsuit also lists 40 priests from central and northern New Mexico who the lawsuits claim were part of a culture of child sex abuse during that time in the Archdiocese.
"The therapeutic needs of these men require transparency by the current Archdiocese leadership.

Priest Guilty of Abuse in Minn. Deported to India

A priest who was convicted of fondling a 12-year-old girl while he was working in the Diocese of Winona has been deported to his native India.

Officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement say 48-year-old Leo Charles Koppala was turned over to authorities in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Koppola was charged last June with second-degree criminal sexual conduct. He pleaded guilty in March, admitting he fondled the girl while eating dinner at her grandmother's house.

The Diocese of Winona has said Koppala was assigned in 2009 to the Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Blue Earth and to St. Mary's in Winnebago. He was placed on leave in June, and the diocese alerted his home diocese of Nellore, India.

A priest who was convicted of fondling a 12-year-old girl while he was working in the Diocese of Winona has been deported to his native India, officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Wednesday.
ICE said Leo Charles Koppala, 48, was turned over to authorities in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Koppola was charged last June with second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a victim younger than 13. He pleaded guilty in March, admitting he fondled a girl while eating dinner at her grandmother's house.
ICE says Koppala didn't contest his deportation, and an immigration judge ordered his deportation April 1.
"Koppala held a position of trust in the Catholic Church and the community. He broke that trust," Scott Baniecke, field office director for ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations in St. Paul, said in a statement. "We sincerely hope that his permanent removal from the United States will help the healing process for the victim and the victim's family."

Three more credibly accused child molesting clerics have been publicly exposed for the first time thanks to the courage of victims. We applaud these brave men and women for stepping forward and beg them to contact secular authorities, not church figures.

There are at least two key lessons here.
First, times are slowly changing. It's somewhat less difficult these days for victims to expose predators. So we encourage anyone who was hurt by clerics – no matter how long ago it happened – to speak up so that the truth can be known, kids can be protected and healing can really happen.
Second, there are obviously many child molesting clerics who have yet to be publicly exposed. So we again prod Catholic officials – as we do nearly every day and have done nearly every day for a quarter century – to go beyond the bare minimum and aggressively use their resources and bully pulpits and websites and bulletins and newspapers to beg those who saw, suspected or suffered clergy sex crimes to speak up.
It's irresponsible for Catholic officials to passively sit back and wait for the phone to ring. Pittsburgh's bishop should personally visit every single parish where a proven, admitted and credibly accused priest, nun, seminarian or church employee worked. The bishops should clearly and emphatically beg victims, witnesses and whistleblowers to break their silence by calling police and prosecutors. Terse, carefully crafted three sentence notices tucked far back in a diocesan newspaper or parish bulletin don't cut it.

A Catholic priest who has worked in Minnesota and was convicted of child sex crimes has been deported back to his home country of India. He is Fr. Leo Charles Koppala.

This is not the first predator priest from India who has worked and abused in Minnesota. Fr. Joseph Jeyapaul raped a Minnesota girl, Megan Peterson, just a few years ago. He returned to India and until recently, oversaw a group of schools there, even though his bishop knew he was a fugitive from justice. He's being extradited now.
Kids are more at risk of sexual violence in the developing world and that is why we hope Catholic officials will do all they can to warn unsuspecting families about this dangerous man. Bishop John Quinn of the Winona Diocese claims he alerted Catholic officials in Nellore, India about Fr. Koppala. We hope Quinn actually followed through and we hope serious action is taken by Indian church officials to ensure that Fr. Koppala is kept away from children.

Catholic priest deported to India for molesting minor in US

A Catholic priest from India - who previously worked with the Archdiocese of Winona, Minnesota - was deported today following his conviction for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old.
Leo Charles Koppala, 48, was escorted by officers of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) on a commercial flight and turned over to Indian authorities on May 14 in New Delhi, the federal agency said.
This deportation was conducted by officers with ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Bloomington, Minnesota.
On June 8, 2013, the Blue Earth (Minnesota) Police Department arrested Koppala and charged him with second-degree criminal sexual conduct. The victim was 12-year-old at the time of the offense.
On June 10, 2013, Koppala posted bail and was released from local custody.

57-year old Gabriele DelBianco is also a former Catholic priest, and has been handed a penitentiary term on sex-related charges at Sarnia courthouse. Ontario Superior Court Justice Joseph Donohue sentenced DelBianco to a total of four years in federal prison. He had been found guilty of three of 18 charges against him relating to incidents involving four teenage girls during the 1980′s in southwestern Ontario while in the priesthood.

In February, court found DelBianco, 57, guilty of one count of gross indecency against one victim and sexually assaulting another woman twice.

Number of people reporting abuse at North Catholic up to 19

The scope of one of the largest sex abuse scandals in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh grew Wednesday with the disclosure that 19 people have made 23 allegations of abuse by members of a religious order at the former North Hills Catholic High School.
The Rev. Ronald Lengwin, spokesman for the diocese, said 18 of the alleged victims are men and the other is a woman. The latest Marianist brothers being accused of abuse are Brother James Kline, who taught at North Catholic from 1940 to 1947; Brother Joseph Binder, who taught at North Catholic from 1961 to 1966, 1975 to 1976 and 1979 to 1989; and Brother Julius May, whose service date at the school is unknown. Kline died in 1997, Binder in 2000 and May in 1970.
Asked how the diocese could not have known about such expansive abuse at one school, Lengwin responded, “I don't know how you wouldn't know or would know. A lot of people were able to hide their immoral behavior.”
The scandal began on March 20 when the diocese learned that Marianist Brother Bernard Hartman, 74, a former science teacher at North Catholic, is awaiting trial in Australia on charges he molested four students at a Catholic school there in the 1970s and ‘80s.

We are glad that this dangerous predator will spend time in jail. We are disappointed it is not for longer, but glad he will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
We hope church officials will take further action and post the names, photos, work histories and whereabouts of all credibly accused child molesters on church bulletins and websites. We also hope this ruling encourages others to come forward and report to police.

Marion County Priest Placed On Leave As Archidiocese Investigates Abuse Allegations

The Archdiocese of Louisville says it has opened an investigation into sexual abuse allegations against a Marion County priest. The Courier-Journal reports a May 8th letter written by Archbishop Joseph Kurtz says the church is looking into complaints against the Rev. Joseph Hemmerle. Hemmerle, who is the pastor of two Marion County parishes, has been placed on leave.
Kurtz says the archdiocese has reported the allegations to the commonwealth’s attorney in Meade County where the alleged abuse took place in the 1970s.

IT was rule 85 that stated the most obvious: Brothers must not fondle their pupils. It entered the constitution of the Christian Brothers in 1962, a time when the order was supposedly getting tougher on the pedophiles in its ranks.
It spoke volumes about the order that they still didn’t get it. Assaulting boys was not breaking a rule, or even breaking the vow of chastity — it was a crime. The order even hid behind the quaint term “fondling”.
Former Christian Brothers leader Anthony Shanahan was asked last week in the child sex abuse royal commission what he thought they had meant by “fondling” in 1962.
The royal commission has been inquiring into the handling of the shocking sexual abuse and brutal beatings in the order’s four notorious Western Australian orphanages between 1947 and 1968.
“I presume it would refer to like having a hand around the student, for example, sort of sitting with the student, sort of hand on him, sort of perhaps rubbing his back, that sort of physical contact,” Shanahan, a member of the order’s WA governing council from 1989 to 2002, said.

Child-abuse at four Catholic orphanage-type institutions was so bad (and was so well covered-up) that the Christian Brothers earned a reputation many years ago as the "Christian Buggers", Australia's national child-abuse Royal Commission was told during public hearings in April-May 2014.
The senior barrister assisting the Royal Commission, Ms Gail Furness, said at a public hearing that the mention of "Christian Buggers" was made in a report from the UK House of Commons, referring to four Catholic institutions in Western Australia. These institutions housed disadvantaged boys, many of whom were orphans shipped to Australia from the UK and Malta during migration schemes.
Australia's Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse held two weeks of public hearings in Perth in April-May 2014 to investigate how the Christian Brothers and successive West Australian governments responded to allegations of horrific abuse at four Christian Brothers institutions in the two decades to 1968. The Institutions were:
* Bindoon (St Joseph’s Farm and Trade School);
* Castledare (Castledare Junior Orphanage);
* Clontarf (St Vincent’s Orphanage); and
* Tardun (St Mary’s Agricultural School).
Eleven former residents of the institutions told the Royal Commission about indecent assaults, beatings, child labour, neglect and cruelty by the Christian Brothers. The abuse was successfully covered up by the Christian Brothers community.

At the end of the month, the NSW Special Commission of Enquiry is due to release its final report. The full title of the special commission of enquiry is the “Special Commission of Inquiry into matters relating to the Police investigation of certain child sexual abuse allegations in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.”
Many people have latched on to what they see as the core issue at stake. At the core of the enquiry, for many people, is the existence of a ‘Catholic mafia’ within the ranks of the NSW police force. A Catholic mafia that, if it exists, is responsible for protecting accused Catholic clergy from investigations and convictions in NSW. A Catholic mafia, that, if it exists, represents a serious blight on the Australian system of justice. A Catholic mafia that, if it exists, needs to be rooted out quickly before more children are harmed by predators potentially protected at high levels of the NSW system of justice.
While the existence of a Catholic mafia within the ranks of the NSW police is indeed an allegation made by whistleblower police officer, Detective Chief Inspector Peter Fox, whose fearless stance sparked the NSW enquiry (and indeed gave the necessary impetus for establishment of the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse), and may be what most concerned people really want to know about, this is not in fact the focus of the NSW enquiry. Even if it should be.
The NSW enquiry established by former NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and headed by Margaret Cunneen SC is very limited in its scope. It’s only charged with the ability to look at two matters:
1. “The circumstances in which Detective Chief Inspector Peter Fox was asked to cease investigating relevant matters and whether it was appropriate to do so; and
2. Whether, and the extent to which, officials of the Catholic Church facilitated, assisted, or co-operated with, Police investigations of relevant matters, including whether any investigation has been hindered or obstructed by, amongst other things, the failure to report alleged criminal offences, the discouraging of witnesses to come forward, the alerting of alleged offenders to possible police actions, or the destruction of evidence.”
Note the use of the term “relevant matters.” which are said to be:
“… any matter relating directly or indirectly to alleged child sexual abuse involving Father Denis McAlinden or Father James Fletcher, including the responses to such allegations by officials of the Catholic Church (and whether or not the matter involved, or is alleged to have involved, criminal conduct).”

Assault charges against for St Stanislaus' form master

A FORMER priest and St Stanislaus’ College form master has been charged with 10 counts of indecently assaulting a male.
The matter involving Peter John Ryan, now 71 of Newington, was mentioned before magistrate Michael Allen in Bathurst Local Court yesterday.
Ryan, who is being represented by barrister Greg Walsh, did not appear during the brief hearing, which was mentioned by Department of Public Prosecutions solicitor Mr Walford.
Mr Walford told the court there were still police statements outstanding and asked the matter be put over until June 16 for replies.

Catholic diocese removes priest as pastor of Shelton church

A Shelton priest has been relieved of his duties at St. Margaret Mary Church in Shelton.
Diocese of Bridgeport Bishop Frank J. Caggiano made the announcement that the Rev. John J. Stronkowski submitted his resignation after being asked to do so by the bishop.
“I do this in light of serious difficulties that have come to my attention recently regarding Father Stronkowski’s tenure as administrator, including his persistent absenteeism from both the rectory and the parish and its ministries, his growing difficulties with both the staff and lay leaders of the parish, and other personal and administrative shortcomings,” Caggiano wrote in a letter distributed to parishioners during this past weekend.
Been at parish since 2012
Stronkowski has been serving as the parish pastor since January, and previously was appointed as its administrator in September 2012.
He has been a priest in the Diocese of Bridgeport since 1985.

Ky priest accused of sexual abuse

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Catholic priest who leads two parishes in central Kentucky has been placed on administrative leave after an allegation that he sexually abused a boy in the 1970s.
The Rev. Joseph Hemmerle is pastor at St. Francis of Assisi and Holy Cross parishes in Marion County.
Archbishop Joseph Kurtz wrote in a letter to parishioners that the Archdiocese of Louisville was contacted by someone who alleged the abuse by Hemmerle. The archdiocese referred it to law enforcement in Meade County, where the abuse allegedly occurred. The archdiocese is also conducting an internal investigation.
"We realize that this is a painful situation, and we want to support you during this time of uncertainty," Kurtz wrote. "Please keep Father Joe and all victims of sexual abuse in your prayers."
The Courier-Journal reports Hemmerle was also put on leave in 2002 after another man alleged he was molested in the mid-1970s at Camp Tall Trees, in Otter Creek Park. Hemmerle was allowed to return to ministry after investigations by police and the archdiocese could not substantiate the accusation.

Priest serving at St. James Parish in Davis arrested for alleged sexual abuse of minor

Father Hector Coria, a priest of the Diocese of Sacramento serving since July 1, 2012 as parochial vicar of St. James Parish in Davis, was arrested May 9 by Davis police on suspicion of statutory rape and oral copulation with a minor.

Police began investigating the sexual abuse charges against Father Coria, 45, earlier this month, according to a spokesman for the Davis Police Department. Father Coria allegedly befriended the 17-year-old female victim in late 2013, police said.

“In late 2013, Father Coria began a sexual relationship with the minor and engaged in that sexual relationship on multiple occasions since 2013,” a department news release said.

On May 9, Davis police served search warrants at multiple locations and subsequently arrested Father Coria. He was booked into Yolo County Jail on May 9 but was released on bail as of the evening of May 10, according to a jail spokeswoman. He is expected to be arraigned next month in Yolo Superior Court.

The following statement was released May 10 by Kevin Eckery, spokesman for the Diocese of Sacramento, concerning the arrest of Father Coria:

“Father Hector Coria, a priest at St. James Parish in Davis, has been arrested for alleged sexual misconduct by a minor by the City of Davis Police Department.

A Davis Catholic priest was arrested for having sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl, the Davis Police Department said.
Rev. Hector Coria, 45, was taken into custody by police after officers served search warrants at multiple locations Friday, police said.

The sexual molestation of a child by a person in a position of power—especially religious power—is a crime.
The term "statutory rape" is troublesome. It implies that the victim—a child—has the power to consent to a sexual relationship with a much older adult in a position of power. Not only was Fr. Hector Coria an adult who should have known better, but he is also a priest with a moral and religious authority. And now, he has allegedly sexually molested a child. That is a crime with devastating effects on the victim, the community and the public.
We encourage Davis and Yolo County law enforcement to vigorously investigate this case, seek out other victims, and encourage witnesses to come forward. Coria has only been a priest for a short time, and we fear that there may be other victims from his time in the seminary and after his 2011 ordination.
We also urge Sacramento Bishop Jaime Soto to reach out to the Spanish speaking communities where Coria worked, as well as the student community at UC Davis, where Coria conducted seminars and retreats. We beg Soto to act quickly and reach out to parishioners to ensure that they understand the gravity of Coria's alleged crimes and do not act in ways that alienate and re-victimize girls who may have been abused, as we saw in the case of Redding priest Fr. Uriel Ojeda.

Davis Priest Arrested for Relationship with Minor, on Administrative Leave

A week-long investigation ended with Davis police arresting Father Hector Coria of St. James Catholic Church.
“Unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and oral copulation, is what occurred here,” Davis Asst. Police Chief Darren Pytel said.
Police believe Coria began the inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old girl from his parish, late last year.
Investigators learned of the alleged affair just this week, and began their investigation, which led them to search several locations Friday, and ended with Coria being booked into the Yolo County Jail.
He has since made bail.
“Well, that may explain why confession was cancelled today,” parishioner Richard Bruce said.

DAVIS (CBS13) – Parishioners had no idea of the arrest of a popular priest until an announcement was made at Saturday’s 5:30 p.m. mass.
Many at St. James Parish still can’t believe it was the priest they describe as friendly and popular.
“It’s the closest I’ve been to a priest or someone in the parish accused of something like this. I’m blown away,” said one parishioner.
Friday, officers arrested Father Hector Coria on charges he charges he was having sex with a teenager.
“I’m heartbroken because he’s such a dear person. I can’t believe it,” said another parishioner.
Davis police began investing 45-year-old Coria earlier this month after information surfaced that he was having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl. Police would not say if the girl was a member of the church, only noting that the alleged relationship occurred at the same time Coria was a priest.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —A former Trinity High School teacher cleared by the Archdiocese of Louisville of a sexual abuse allegation in 2002 is now facing another allegation.
“On May 8, an individual made a report of sexual abuse to the Archdiocese of Louisville. He reported that as a child he had been sexually abused in the 1970s by Father Joseph Hemmerle,” said the archdiocese in a statement.

Marion Co. priest faces new allegation of child sexual abuse

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The pastor of two Roman Catholic parishes in Marion County has been placed on administrative leave by the Archdiocese of Louisville after he was accused for a second time of child sexual abuse.
According to the Archdiocese, the accuser came forward on May 8 and reported that Fr. Joseph Hemmerle abused him as a child in Meade County during the 1970s. Hemmerle was ordained to the priesthood in 1967 and currently serves as pastor of St. Francis and Holy Cross parishes in Marion County.
In a written statement, the Archdiocese said it has written to the Commonwealth Attorney in Meade County to report the accusation and has advised the person making the accusation to contact authorities.
Hemmerle was previously accused of child sexual abuse in 2002. The accuser in that case also reported having been sexually abused by Hemmerle in the 1970s, and the priest was placed on administrative leave. After several months of investigating, neither police nor the Archdiocese was able to substantiate the accusation, so Hemmerle was allowed to return to the ministry.

A Davis Catholic priest was arrested for having sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl, the Davis Police Department said.
Rev. Hector Coria, 45, was taken into custody by police after officers served search warrants at multiple locations Friday, police said.
The police department started investigating Coria after they got reports of the sexual abuse in early May. During the investigation, police found that Coria befriended the 17-year-old girl while he was a priest at St. James Parish in late 2013 and began a sexual relationship with the teen, police said.
Coria was booked into Yolo County jail for statutory rape and oral copulation with a minor.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the suspect, Fr. Hector Coria, a 45-year-old male, had befriended the minor while he was a priest with a Catholic Church.

DAVIS (CBS13) – A Davis priest has been arrested on charges that he had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a minor, Davis Police announced Saturday.
Police have been investigating Fr. Hector Coria, a priest at St. James Parish in Davis, after allegations arose earlier in May that he had been sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl. Investigators found that Coria had befriended the girl while he was a priest with the Catholic Church.
Investigators believe that, since late 2013, Coria had been in a sexual relationship with the girl.
Friday, authorities served a warrant on Coria’s residence and arrested him on charges of statutory rape and oral copulation with a minor.
“In keeping with diocesan policy, Fr. Coria has been placed on administrative leave, his faculties have been withdrawn and he may no longer publicly function as a priest while this matter is under investigation by local law enforcement and Davis Police,” wrote Kevin Eckery, spokesperson for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, in a statement on Coria’s arrest.

A Davis priest has been arrested for the alleged sexual abuse of a 17-year-old girl.
On Friday, Davis police served search warrants at multiple locations and subsequently arrested Father Hector Coria, 45, on charges of statutory rape and oral copulation with a minor, according to a department statement. Coria was booked into the Yolo County Jail.
The Davis Police Department began to investigate the sexual abuse allegations earlier in May. During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the suspect had befriended the minor while he was a priest with a Catholic Church.
He is listed as a priest at St. James Parish in Davis. According to a Facebook page of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Paradise, he was ordained in January 2011.
In late 2013, Coria began a sexual relationship with the minor and engaged in that sexual relationship on multiple occasions.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call Davis police at 747-5400.
The following statement was released by Kevin Eckery, a spokesman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, regarding Coria's charges, to KCRA.
"Fr. Hector Coria, a priest at St. James Parish in Davis, has been arrested for alleged sexual misconduct with a minor by the City of Davis Police Department.

Friday’s arrest of the Rev. Hector Coria, 45, was the result of an ongoing investigation by Davis police. In that investigation, it is alleged that while a priest at St. James Parish church in 2013, Coria befriended the minor and began a sexual relationship with her.
Coria was arrested on suspicion of statutory rape and oral copulation with a minor, and has been booked into Yolo County jail.
The Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, in a written statement, said Coria has been placed on administrative leave and may no longer publicly function as a priest while under investigation.

The pastor of St. Francis and Holy Cross is on administrative leave following an accusation that he molested a young boy in the 1970s.
Parishioners of the churches received a letter Friday from the Archdiocese of Louisville stating an individual had accused Father Joseph Hemmerle of sexual abuse.
Brian Reynolds, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Louisville, confirmed Friday that Hemmerle was on leave and that the church was in the process of turning the matter over to law enforcement.
Reynolds said the church had heard “secondhand” that an accusation was coming, but was not notified until Thursday. Reynolds said Archbishop of Louisville Joseph Kurtz met with Hemmerle the day the accusation was received, informed him of the accusation and placed him on leave.
The letter to parishioners stated the actions by the archdiocese conformed with its policies, which includes placing the accused on a leave of absence, outreach to the person making the accusation, reporting the accusation to civil authorities and conducting its own internal investigation.
This is the second time Hemmerle has been accused of sexually abusing young boys in the 1970s, when he served as a camp director for Camp Tall Trees in Otter Creek Park in Meade County.

"The Vatican is following his case at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which is the one that handles child abuse cases. We're supposed to wait for its verdict," said the prelate.
The Cardinal said he did not know how the process go. "I just stuck to report the case to the Pope," he pointed out.

Former Windsor priest sentenced for sex crimes

A former Windsor priest has been sentenced to four years in prison and will spend the rest of his life on the sex offender registry.
Gabriele Del Bianco, 57, was sentenced Wednesday in a Sarnia court for three of 18 sex charges he initially faced for his abuse of young girls in the 1980s and early 1990s.
“I feel that we have all been robbed of so much joy,” one victim said Wednesday in court before her tormentor was sentenced. “Uncomplicated joy that comes from a world that makes sense. What Gabe has done doesn’t make sense. And, even more importantly, what God has allowed Gabe to do has left so many of us without faith.”
The trial began in October with four of Del Bianco’s alleged victims testifying in court.
Del Bianco was acquitted of sexual misconduct charges involving two women but found guilty for abusing the other two.

Six monks at Glenstal faced 10 abuse allegations

Ten allegations of child abuse have been made against six Benedictine monks at Glenstal Abbey in Co Limerick since January 1st, 1975.
The National Board for Safeguarding Children (NBSC) review said that the Benedictine community at Glenstal Abbey “is made up of 27 priests, 10 professed brothers (all of whom have taken solemn vows), and one brother who has taken temporary vows. All of these men irrespective of age or status are referred to as ‘monks’.”
It noted that of the six accused monks “two are deceased”, one of whom had admitted the abuse and was sent for treatment. He was removed from monastic life/the clerical state by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) in 2007. The allegation against the second monk was received long after his death and its veracity could not be established.
Of the remaining four accused monks, two had left the Benedictines and Glenstal. One eventually admitted abusing a student at the school there 14 years previously. He too had been removed from monastic life/the clerical state by the CDF.

Investigators seek possible victims of child abuse suspect

Forest Reuben Gibson, 33, was arrested April 28 by the Canyon County Sheriff's Office for alleged sexual abuse of a minor ages 16 or 17. The sheriff's office announced the arrest Friday, noting that investigators worry there could be more victims in Canyon County and other nearby areas.
Anyone with information about possible victims or abuse is asked to contact Canyon County Detective Shawn Becker at 454-7261 or sbecker@canyonco.org.
Details of the allegations against Gibson are sparse. Friday's announcement noted that the Payette County Prosecutor's Office is involved and described Gibson as a "local church youth leader." But Payette County's ties to the case were not spelled out, and it wasn't clear if the alleged abuse involved a member of Gibson's church.

So far no other list in Minnesota has included him. Looking at his record, he was in St Cloud at Cathedral High School and St. John XXIII Middle Schools a chaplain.

“I would say a dozen,” Funcheon testified at first. But attorney Anderson challenged him, suggesting there are more victims.
Anderson – “Do you think you might be underestimating that number?
Funcheon –”Wow – I couldn’t count ‘em up. I’ll go – I don’t know. I’ll go to 18. I can’t give you a number on this, okay?”

Three new people (from Ohio, Minnesota and Indiana) have been put on the US bishops sex abuse panel. All are Catholic. All have close ties to Catholic schools or universities. None, as best we can tell, show any signs of real courage or independence.
So it's the “same old, same old.”
Originally, a dozen years ago, this National Review Board showed a glimmer of hope. Initially, some of its members were high profile and outspoken individuals who didn't depend on church institutions for their paychecks (such as former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating and Illinois Judge Anne Burke). Now, however, it's filled with low key Catholic insiders whose incomes often derive from Catholic institutions and who are clearly quiet and compliant “company men.” They will very likely never utter a single critical word about a single Catholic official, no matter how egregious his misconduct might be or how many kids are hurt on his watch.
Very quickly this so-called “watch dog” became a “lap dog.” It remains a “lap dog.”
Unfortunately, these new appointees (Mary K. Huffman of Centerville, Ohio; Donald J. Schmid of Granger, Indiana, and Nelle Moriarty of Rochester, Minnesota) look to be more of the same.
These men and women give their time and lend their reputations to church officials. But they end up being used as part of a shrewd public relations strategy in which bishops' put respected, sincere lay people on panels, give them inadequate and inaccurate information, and thus shield themselves from criticism when bad decisions are made.
Far too few Catholics on these panels ever become brave “whistleblowers.” And that's one reason why child molesting clerics remain hidden, why kids remain at risk and why the church's horrific clergy sex abuse and cover up crisis continues.
NOTE - Just this week, two Seattle men who were on a local church review board blasted Seattle's archbishop for keeping secret – for a decade – serious allegations against a predator priest.

Judge, Federal Prosecutor, Family Therapist Appointed To National Review Board

WASHINGTON—Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), has Named Judge Mary. K. Huffman of Centerville, Ohio; Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald J. Schmid of Granger, Indiana, and Marriage and Family Therapist Nelle Moriarty of Rochester, Minnesota to four-year terms on the U.S. bishops’ National Review Board. Their terms begin in June.
Archbishop Kurtz in the appointment letters said that “The National Review Board plays a vital role as a consultative body assisting the bishops in ensuring the accountability of our procedures in the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.” With a quote from the Charter, he added that “The whole Church, especially the laity, at both the diocesan and national levels, needs to be engaged in maintaining safe environments in the Church for children and young people.”
Judge Huffman has served as a judge on the Montgomery County, Ohio Common Pleas Bench since 2002, and is an adjunct faculty member of the University of Dayton School of Law, her alma mater. She currently is president of the Dayton Bar Association.
Mr. Schmid has been Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana since 1994. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School and the University of Notre Dame, where he was an adjunct professor of law, 2001-2008.
Nelle Moriarty has been a marriage and family therapist at Bluestem Center for Child and Family Development in Rochester, Minnesota since 1997, and a school counselor in Rochester Catholic Schools since 1992. She has been a trainer for the VIRTUS “Protecting God’s Children” program since 2011, and chairs the diocesan review board of the Diocese of Winona, Minnesota. She holds a master of science in counseling psychology from Mankato State University and has a Specialist Certificate in Human Sexuality from the University of Minnesota.

SCHMID APPOINTED TO NATIONAL REVIEW BOARD

GRANGER — A diocesan resident has been appointed to the National Review Board of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. That board collaborates with the bishops’ conference in preventing the sexual abuse of minors by persons in the service of the Church.
Donald J. Schmid of Granger, an assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Indiana, was nominated by Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. His appointment was announced May 1 by Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, president of the bishops’ conference.
Schmid is the father of three children and a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He has been a prosecutor with the Department of Justice since 1994 and has served on the diocesan review board since 2009. He also has served on the review board for the Midwest and United States Provinces of the Congregation of Holy Cross for several years.
Bishop Rhoades told Today’s Catholic that he nominated Schmid for the National Review Board because of his “excellent” service on the Diocesan Review Board.

Father McCormick finds a lawyer

With two weeks to go before the judge’s deadline, the Rev. Andrew McCormick has found a new lawyer to represent him in his retrial on charges he sexually assaulted a 10-year-old altar boy in 1997 when he was at St. John Cantius church in Bridesburg.
Center City criminal defense lawyer Trevan Borum confirmed Wednesday that he will represent McCormick, 58, in the retrial. Borum said he will formally enter his appearance at a May 29 status hearing on the case before Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Gwendolyn N. Bright.
If Borum’s name is familiar to some, it may be because he had been hired by retired Catholic priest Robert Brennan. Brennan, 76, was charged with raping a boy from ages 11 to 14 who was a member of the “altar guild” at the Resurrection of Our Lord parish school in Rhawnhurst. The criminal charges were dismissed after the 26-year-old alleged victim died of an accidental drug overdose on Oct. 13.
McCormick had been searching for a new lawyer since March 12 when a jury deadlocked on the charges against him and defense attorney William J. Brennan Jr. was permitted to withdraw. Earlier, Brennan had said he felt uncomfortable after discovering shortly before trial that he knew the extended family of the alleged victim.

All the offences are alleged to have taken place between 1995 and November, 1999 when Spence – known then as Father Brian – was vicar of St John the Baptist Church in Crowthorne.
He was more recently priest-in-charge at St Mark’s Church in Englefield before he retired.
The jury watched a police interview recorded in 2012, in which the woman, now 30, described the incident as “a burden which I have carried with me since I was 11”

Pope appoints bishop of Elphin, Ireland

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has appointed Fr. Kevin Doran bishop of the diocese of Elphin, Ireland. Bishop-elect Doran succeeds Bishop Christopher Jones in the pastoral care of the diocese on the western coast of Ireland.
Bishop-elect Kevin Doran was born in Dublin June 26, 1953. He studied for the priesthood at Mater Dei College in Dublin and at the Pontifical Irish College in Rome. He was ordained a priest July 6, 1977 for the Archdiocese of Dublin.
After his ordination, he taught in a school in Ringsend, Dublin ( 1977-1983). From 1980 to 1983 he served in the diocesan Secretariat for Education. In 1983 he was appointed University Chaplain. In 1990 he returned to Rome, earning a doctorate in philosophy at the Angelicum and at the same time was appointed Spiritual Director at the Irish College .
On returning to Ireland he was Parochial Vicar at Foxrock (1995-1998), director of the diocesan, later national Commission for Vocations (1998-2006), pastor of Glendalough (2005-2009) , and finally, Secretary General of the Preparatory Committee of 50th International Eucharistic Congress (2008-2012).

Two men who allege they were sexually abused as young boys by a now-deceased priest are suing the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fall River and its retired former bishop.
Daniel Sherwood and Paul Andrews allege in a lawsuit filed in Hartford, Connecticut that they were victims of clergy sex abuse by the late Monsignor Maurice Souza at St. Anthony’s parish in East Falmouth, Massachusetts in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. Monsignor Souza died in 1996.
The suit was filed in Connecticut, which allows for a longer statue of limitations, until victims are 48 years old, said Robert Hoatson, a former priest who co-founded “Road to Recovery”, which serves survivors of sexual abuse and their families.
“The scandal of abuse was bad enough,” said Hoatson.
“What was worse, in many cases, was the cover-up and or the denial and or the enabling. And Bishop Cronin, we think did all of those things,” said Hoatson, outside a Fall River building housing offices of the Diocese where Daniel Cronin presided as Bishop for more than 20 years before being made Archbishop of Hartford, Connecticut. He has since retired.

Diocese details efforts to resolve new sex abuse claims; result called "unreasonable"

FALL RIVER — The Diocese of Fall River was first notified in 2012 of sexual abuse allegations against the late Monsignor Maurice Souza, diocesan spokesman John Kearns told reporters Tuesday.
Kearns said independent investigators hired by the diocese did not find evidence to support some of the claims made by two former altar servers that Souza sexually abused the boys for almost 10 years in the late 1970s and mid ‘80s. Kearns said the diocese offered both men counseling, and tried to resolve the issue through mediation, but he claimed that their attorney, Mitchell Garabedian of Boston, called off the mediation in May 2013.
“We wanted to resolve it through mediation, but that process was stopped,” Kearns said.
Garabedian said the mediation was unsuccessful because the diocese was “unreasonable in its position.”

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — Two former altar boys have filed a lawsuit claiming they were sexually abused by a now-deceased priest.
The lawsuit alleges Maurice Souza, a former monsignor at St. Anthony’s Parish in East Falmouth, abused the boys in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Road to Recovery, an advocacy group, is calling attention to the suit, which claims the abuse began in the 1970s, when the boys were 9 and 10 years old, and that it lasted until they were 17.
The alleged victims filed the lawsuit against the Diocese of Fall River and former Bishop Daniel Cronin, who they claim failed to protect them.
“We have two very damaged men. We want them made whole,” said Robert Hoatson, a spokesperson for the alleged victims. “If the diocese steps up and does the empathetic and sympathetic thing, we can avoid a trial.”

Two men have filed a lawsuit against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fall River and then-Bishop Daniel Cronin for allegedly failing to prevent a priest from sexually abusing them when they were altar boys.
The men, who are now in their late 40s, filed a complaint in Connecticut in January and reported being sexually abused over several years.
Although the lawsuit was filed in January, the two men have asked the Road to Recovery, a support group for survivors of sexual assault, to speak on their behalf because they now want to make the suit known to the public.
"We're here (Tuesday) to congratulate, to support and encourage two very courageous men who have said to themselves enough is enough," said Robert Hoatson, of Road to Recovery.
The alleged victims accuse the now-deceased Monsignor Maurice Souza of sexually assaulting them while he was a priest and pastor at St. Anthony's Parish in East Falmouth.

FALL RIVER - A former priest from the Fall River catholic church is named in a lawsuit for sexually abusing minors. Now the Archbishop who acted as his supervisor also faces accusations of neglect and oversight.
The lawsuit has been filed in Connecticut.
Retired Archbishop of Hartford, Daniel Cronin, was the Bishop in Fall River back in the 70's and 80's while the accused priest Monsignor Maurice Souza allegedly committed countless sexual crimes against two altar boys.
The lawsuit names Cronin as the bystander who let it happen.
"He was his supervisor, and when supervisors are negligent they need to be held accountable... Someone knew in that parish, someone knew probably in the area, and probably should have stepped in and done something about it," said Robert Hoatson of Road to Recovery - a nonprofit supporting the alleged victims.

The revelations began when the diocese learned earlier this year that Brother Bernard Hartman was being prosecuted by Australian authorities on charges he molested four students at a Catholic school there in the 1970s and 80s.

Here's our question today for Bishop Zubik: Why wait? Why not write to every alum of every Pittsburgh Catholic school and beg them to come forward if they were hurt by any priest, nun, brother, seminarian or teacher?
That's what a truly caring shepherd would do.
Years ago, Pittsburgh Catholic officials had a choice: do real outreach to clergy sex abuse victims or to pretend to do real outreach to clergy sex abuse victims.
They opted to pretend.
The result is clear: credibly accused child molesting clerics who might have been exposed, ousted or even criminally prosecuted years ago were not. Victims who might have gotten help or felt relieved did not. A cancer in the diocese that could have been removed more quickly was not.
Instead, for years, child molesting clerics stayed “under the radar.” Some of them stayed on the job in schools and churches. Some of them quietly moved on, getting other positions near kids. Some quietly resigned.
And for years, victims – perhaps dozens of them – have suffered in silence, shame and self-blame, believing they were the only ones, fearing their truth would never surface, needlessly blaming themselves.
Who knows how many other proven, admitted and credibly accused priests, nuns, brothers, seminarians, coaches, or teachers are still under the radar.

FALL RIVER — A New Jersey-based group for sexual abuse victims offered its support today for two men, who are charging in a lawsuit that former Fall River Bishop Daniel A. Cronin did not properly supervise a priest they said assaulted them.
"We are supporting two men who have said 'enough is enough," said Robert M. Hoatson, co-founder and president of Road to Recovery, Inc., a New Jersey nonprofit charity that assists victims of sexual abuse and their families.
The victims have accused the late Rev. Monsignor Maurice Souza, a New Bedford native, of sexually abusing them when they were altar boys, beginning when they were 9 and 10 years old, and Souza was assigned to St. Anthony's Parish in East Falmouth.
The lawsuit, filed in January in a Connecticut court, names Cronin and the Fall River Diocese as defendants. Cronin headed the Diocese for 21 years until he left in December 1991 to become archbishop of the Hartford Diocese.
In a separate press conference, John E. Kearns Jr., a spokesman for the Fall River Diocese, said the Diocese first learned of the allegations against Souza when it was notified of a possible claim in 2012.

A former Indiana professor has been hired at a Chicago Catholic university, despite allegations that he “likely” recently sexually harassed a married couple.

He is Miguel H. Diaz, who represented the U.S. at the Vatican from 2009-2012. He also taught Theology at Notre Dame University.
We strongly urge Loyola University (where he will soon teach) officials to reverse and explain their reckless decision. We also call on officials at the University of Dayton (where he previously taught) to admit and disclose Diaz' wrongdoing, so that others will be protected from his predatory tendencies.
No students and staff at any college should be subjected to sexual harassment. Given the findings of University of Dayton officials, Diaz does not belong on any campus.

A Catholic cleric, who was convicted of disorderly conduct involving a minor and was recently "outed," also worked in Cincinnati. We want Catholic officials from Ohio and Pennsylvania to reach out to victims.

Brother Ralph Mravintz was convicted of disorderly conduct in 1986, which was a reduced charge from sexual assault of a teenage boy. He worked in Pittsburgh in the 1960s and 1980s. He also worked in Cincinnati at Purcell High School from 1948-49.
We want Pittsburgh and Cincinnati Catholic officials to immediately:
– reach out to anyone who was hurt by him and may be suffering in silence and self blame, and
– post on their websites the names of dozens of proven, admitted and credibly accused child molesting clerics – especially those who are still living and may be hurting other kids right now.
Mravinzt is now deceased.
We hope every single person who saw, suspected or suffered clergy sex crimes and cover ups in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati – whether in a school or parish – will come forward, get help, call police, expose wrongdoers and start healing.

The sexual molestation of a child by a person in a position of power—especially religious power—is a crime.
The term "statutory rape" is troublesome. It implies that the victim—a child—has the power to consent to a sexual relationship with a much older adult in a position of power. Not only was Fr. Hector Coria an adult who should have known better, but he is also a priest with a moral and religious authority. And now, he has allegedly sexually molested a child. That is a crime with devastating effects on the victim, the community and the public.
We encourage Davis and Yolo County law enforcement to vigorously investigate this case, seek out other victims, and encourage witnesses to come forward. Coria has only been a priest for a short time, and we fear that there may be other victims from his time in the seminary and after his 2011 ordination.
We also urge Sacramento Bishop Jaime Soto to reach out to the Spanish speaking communities where Coria worked, as well as the student community at UC Davis, where Coria conducted seminars and retreats. We beg Soto to act quickly and reach out to parishioners to ensure that they understand the gravity of Coria's alleged crimes and do not act in ways that alienate and re-victimize girls who may have been abused, as we saw in the case of Redding priest Fr. Uriel Ojeda.

Sexual abuse claims against the Catholic Diocese of Stockton must be filed with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of California by 4 p.m. on Aug. 15, 2014.
That announcement came from Bishop of Stockton Stephen E. Blaire in a media release sent by Director of Communications Sister Terry Davis.
The deadline for filing a claim, called the “Sexual Abuse Claim Bar Date,” applies to all sexual abuse claims that occurred before Jan. 15, 2014.
Earlier bar dates are set for other types of claims against the diocese pertinent to its filing of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. General claims have to be filed by May 22, 2014. Claims made by governmental bodies must be filed by July 14, 2014.
Sexual-abuse claimants must use the court-approved Sexual Abuse Proof of Claim Form for their claim to be valid. There are a number of ways to obtain that form.

Maria Bunter heard the news over the weekend and couldn’t believe it. Not our Hector, she said. Can’t be.
But on Monday, days after a popular priest at her Davis church was arrested on allegations of sex with a 17-year-old girl, sadness joined Bunter’s disbelief as reality sank in. Hector Coria, 45, a pastor at St. James Parish in Davis, was arrested by Davis police Friday on suspicion of oral copulation and statutory rape involving the teen.
Davis police allege that while a priest at St. James in 2013, Coria befriended the girl and that the two later engaged in sexual relations. Police on Monday offered little information but said search warrants yielded enough to arrest the pastor Friday night. Coria remained free on bail Monday.
“We have a great deal of compassion for him and all concerned. He was a wonderful priest,” Bunter said Monday, standing with husband Walter in the parish parking lot. Coria, she said, always “found the right words” at the pulpit.

Helena Catholic Diocese: Victims have August deadline for sex-abuse claims
HELENA — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena is giving notice that sex abuse victims have until Aug. 11 to file a claim as part of the diocese's bankruptcy proceedings.
The diocese filed for bankruptcy reorganization in January as part of a proposed settlement with about 360 victims of sexual abuse from the 1940s to the 1970s.
Monday's notice by the diocese is part of a May 6 federal court order setting a deadline by which claims must be made.
Anyone who was sexually abused an employee of the diocese, or believes the diocese is liable for their abuse before the Jan. 31 bankruptcy filing, can file a claim by 4:30 p.m. Aug. 11.

Facing the claims, the diocese declared bankruptcy in late January, part of a settlement with the diocese's accusers.
The deal included the creation of a $15 million fund for victims.
The August 11 deadline (4:30 p.m. Mountain Time) follows a May 6th order by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Montana.

101 priests in single diocese accused of abuse in 40 years

The number of priests formally accused of sexually abusing children in the country’s biggest Catholic diocese over the past 40 years has topped 100, according to the latest figures.
The cost of compensating victims of paedophile priests in the diocese has exceeded €20m, with €14m paid out in settlements and €6.4m spent on legal bills.
The review of the Dublin Archdiocese by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church found that allegations were made against three more priests in the last year, bringing to 101 the total of diocesan priests accused of abuse since 1975.
Concerns about 40 of them arose in the past 10 years. Of those, four were convicted in the criminal courts and 23 were found to involve concerns that were credible, although not proven. In those 27 cases, the diocese substantially restricted or terminated their ministries.
Of the total 101 accused, 49 are deceased, 34 are living and remain priests of the diocese, and 18 have left the priesthood and/or the diocese. In total, they faced 432 separate allegations of abuse.

Bishop Reilly admits 'it was terrible' that sex abuse priest was left in post

A BISHOP has admitted that it was "a terrible thing" that an abusive priest was allowed to remain in ministry after complaints of sex abuse had been made against him.
Bishop of Killaloe Dr Kieran O'Reilly said that it was "inexcusable" that 'Father A' remained an active priest until he retired in 1993.
The priest is the late Fr Tom McNamara, who served in the east Clare area of Mountshannon-Whitegate area during the 1970s to 1990s.
A report by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church (NBSCCC) reported that there were 26 complaints of abuse concerning 'Father A'.
Dr O'Reilly confirmed that the late Bishop of Killaloe Dr Michael Harty had referred 'Father A' to therapy.

IRELAND’S new Minister for Justice must follow Alan Shatter’s lead by reuniting thousands of families torn apart by forced adoption, a leading campaigner has said.
Just as the now-disgraced former minister was once praised for bringing justice to women who suffered in Magdalene Laundries, Susan Lohan said his replacement must help forced adoption victims.
The Adoption Rights Alliance co-founder claimed Frances Fitzgerald would have “no excuse” for failing to act due to her past experience as Children’s Minister.
“We expect Frances Fitzgerald to continue to engage with us on dealing with the injustices of forced and illegal adoptions in Ireland by introducing laws that would reunite thousands of families,” Ms Lohan said.

Abuse lawyer Frances Swaine who has worked with the Child Migrant Trust for many years has given the announcement by the Christian Brothers (CB) in Australia that they will review unjust compensation payments made to survivors of childhood abuse a muted welcome.
The Royal Commission into child sex abuse is currently sitting in Perth, Australia and is looking into possible abuse carried out in children’s’ homes run by the Christian Brothers.
Many British child migrants who were sent to Australia and other Commonwealth countries over many decades lived in homes run by the Brothers, and many of them suffered appalling abuse.
The extent of the abuse was revealed to the Royal Commission last week when 11 men gave evidence about the brutal and continuous abuse that they suffered at four orphanages run by the Brotherhood.
Following the giving of evidence last week the Christian Brothers have said that they will re-examine any unjust payments made to survivors of abuse by them.

Catholic priest quizzed again over sex abuse allegations

A Catholic priest has again been quizzed about historic sex allegation.
Canon Mortimer Stanley, 82, who retired from St Vincent de Paul RC Church in Norden, Rochdale, was first interviewed last year.
Originally three women claimed they were indecently assaulted and sexually abused while pupils at nearby St Vincent’s Primary School.
The women were under 11 when it is alleged the offences happened more than 30 years ago.
It is claimed the abuse was committed in a presbytery next to the school. After the M.E.N reported the allegations six other women came forward with information.
Canon Stanley, who joined the church as a parish priest in 1972, retired to his native Ireland in 2002. He retired to Ballybunion in Kerry.

The Archdiocese of Seattle failed to inform Catholic faithful, and made an “astonishing” claim and “serious misstatements” in seeking to explain why a priest suspended from ministry for sexual misconduct with a teenager went on saying mass and conducting weddings, say former leaders of a diocesan review board.
“We urge you to consider releasing the documents of the review board relating to this matter, subject to not identifying any victims, so that the laity can have complete and accurate information,” retired Judge Terrence Carroll and former U.S. Attorney Mike McKay wrote earlier this month to Archbishop J. Peter Sartain.
Or as Carroll put it bluntly in a Monday interview: “By God, let those files be open so people can know what and who we are dealing with. We may have another case like this out there.”
The investigations documents, dating to 2004 and which the archdiocese has refused to make public, would reveal that a 17-year-old boy involved in a sexual relationship with the priest, Harry Quigg, was passed among the priest and friends, according to multiple sources.
Sartain has not talked with or directly responded to Carroll and McKay.

For the past 70 years, Gordon Grant has rarely slept more than two hours a night.
It isn’t the memories of his two tours of Vietnam that keeps the former soldier awake in the dark.
It’s the nightmare he lived while in the care of the Christian Brothers at St Joseph’s Farm and Trade School, in Bindoon, Western Australia, that won’t let him rest.
When he was 13 years old, the principal of the school, Brother Paul Francis Keaney, asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up.
‘He was a huge man, and I said, “I don’t know yet, brother”, and without warning, he slammed his clenched fist into my face and I was knocked backwards along the cement floor,’ Mr Grant told the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Perth last week.
‘He had broken my nose and it started to bleed before I got up from the floor.’
When Keaney asked him again, he replied he wanted to be a poultry farmer.

A judge in Montana has set a “bar date” for clergy sex abuse victims. They have until August to report their crimes and potentially be part of a settlement.

“Bar dates” give victims a limited amount of time to come forward, report their abuse, and receive help. This is wrong. It's convenient for those who commit and conceal heinous child sex crimes. It's hurtful to everyone else.
It often takes years or decades for child sexual abuse victims to find the strength and courage to come forward and report the horrible crimes they suffered. Putting a deadline on when they can speak up and get help only benefits wrongdoers.
Still, we hope anyone who is suffering in silence and self blame will find the courage to come forward and start healing.

A retired judge and ex-U.S. attorney are blasting Seattle's Catholic archbishop for being secretive and deceitful about predator priests.
We're glad they're speaking up. But they are to blame as well. They let themselves be used by church officials. They too kept quiet about Fr. Quigg for a decade.

The two men - retired Judge Terrence Carroll and former U.S. Attorney Mike McKay - are former members of an archdiocesan review board.
It's great to see them urge Archbishop Peter Sartain to “release the documents” about Fr. Quigg, a credibly accused cleric who sexually exploited a teenager, but whose wrongdoing was hidden for ten years until our group recently sent out a news release about him.
But these two men could and should have done more sooner to warn the public and protect others. We hope they'll do more soon, sharing other secrets they've kept. Far too few Catholic church members and employees have become “whistleblowers.” And that's one reason why the church's horrific clergy sex abuse and cover up crisis continues and why child molesting clerics remain hidden and kids remain at risk.
We agree with Carroll and McKay when they say it's deceitful for Sartain to claim his staff “recently learned” that Fr. Quigg was still acting like a priest. We strongly suspect that archdiocesan staff knew Fr. Quigg was doing this but ignored it for fear of drawing attention to his sexual misdeeds.

Over the last five weeks (April 3 - May 14), eight Catholic clerics who belong to a St. Louis-based Catholic group have been publicly exposed – for the first time – as credibly accused child molesters.

All eight are Marianists and all eight worked at a Pittsburgh Catholic school. We suspect that some of them worked in St. Louis too. We call on Catholic officials – with the St. Louis archdiocese, the Pittsburgh diocese, and the Marianists – to disclose the full work histories of the eight clerics.
And we know that there are at least eight proven, admitted and credibly accused child molesting Marianists clerics who HAVE certainly worked – and abused – in St. Louis (at three schools: Vianney, Chaminade and St. Mary's High School).
The burgeoning Pittsburgh scandal is reminiscent of what happened with Brother William C. Mueller (who worked at Chaminade and Vianney). Until 2005, he remained “under the radar.” That year, however, a St. Louis man filed suit against Mueller and the Marianists. Over the next few months dozens and dozens of men in three states disclosed that they too had been sexually victimized by Mueller (who now lives in San Antonio, Texas).
Since all of the eight, newly-accused Pittsburgh Marianists worked at a parochial school, we are asking Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik to write letters to alums of all current and closed parochial schools, urging anyone who was molested to speak up. We urge Archbishop Robert Carlson to do the same here.
We applaud these brave victims for stepping forward and beg them to contact secular authorities, not church figures.
There are at least two key lessons here.
First, times are slowly changing. It's somewhat less difficult these days for victims to expose predators. So we encourage anyone who was hurt by clerics – no matter how long ago it happened – to speak up so that the truth can be known, kids can be protected and healing can really happen.
Second, there are obviously some (perhaps many) child molesting clerics who have yet to be publicly exposed. So we again prod Marianist officials to go beyond the bare minimum and aggressively use their resources and bully pulpits and websites and bulletins and newspapers to beg those who saw, suspected or suffered clergy sex crimes to speak up.
It's irresponsible for Catholic officials to passively sit back and wait for the phone to ring. Top church officials – archdiocesan and Marianists – should personally visit every single parish and school where a proven, admitted and credibly accused cleric worked. They should clearly and emphatically beg victims, witnesses and whistleblowers to break their silence by calling police and prosecutors. Terse, carefully crafted three sentence notices tucked far back in a diocesan newspaper or parish bulletin don't cut it.

POPES and their officials have long benefited from the Vatican’s unique dual status in international law. As the Vatican City State, it can shelter prelates wanted for questioning elsewhere and play host to offshore financial institutions such as the Vatican Bank. But when world leaders visit the pope in Rome it is to meet the absolute ruler of a global entity, the Holy See. As the Holy See, the Vatican engages in diplomacy, holds observer status at the UN and signs most treaties. The Holy See is sometimes called a sovereign entity without territory, although its sovereign, the pope, is also the ruler of the Vatican City State. It is a legal expression of the Catholic church’s leadership, yet American lawyers for the church have successfully argued that the Vatican is not responsible for Catholic clerics’ wrongdoing.

On May 23rd the Vatican’s split personality will be put to a new test when a UN committee releases the findings of an inquiry into the Holy See’s compliance with the Convention against Torture, which it signed in 2002. Most of the questions put to the pope’s representative, Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, in the public hearings were about the sexual abuse of children and adolescents by Catholic clerics. If the committee decides it was torture, a wave of prosecutions of historic offences could follow: there is usually no time limit for bringing torture charges, as there generally is for sex crimes. And if it judges the Holy See accountable for priests’ and bishops’ misconduct, victims’ lawyers may challenge existing jurisprudence and demand compensation from Rome.

The Vatican argues that the offences in question, though repugnant, should not be counted as torture. “Clerical sex abuse is an egregious betrayal of trust and a violation of the innocence of the victims. It causes untold suffering and scandal,” says Bishop Charles Scicluna, who until 2012 was the Vatican official chiefly responsible for prosecuting such cases. “But it does not fall under the definition of torture established in the convention. Neither does it fall under the article that deals with inhuman and degrading treatment. The reason is that [both articles] refer to acts committed by a public official.”

But the Vatican’s interpretation exploits its own dual nature. It says its only public officials are those of the city state, such as its blue-uniformed gendarmes. At least one member of the committee disagrees. Felice Gaer, an American human-rights advocate, argues that the convention imposes a duty on the Vatican to prevent a breach by anyone under the “effective control of the officials of the Holy See”.

Whatever the UN committee’s decision, victims say that the Vatican is still doing too little to protect children from paedophile clerics. Church officials maintain that sexual predators are just as common in other bodies that deal with children. But that is irrelevant, says David Clohessy of SNAP, which represents American victims of clerical abuse. “The issue is not how you keep the bad guys out, but what you do when the bad guys surface.” And here, he says, the Catholic church is deficient.

Even if the Holy See is not accountable for the behaviour of Catholic clerics under the secular laws of the countries in which they minister, they are accountable to the Holy See under canon, or ecclesiastical, law. In 2001 Pope John Paul II ordered all credible allegations of abuse to be forwarded to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican department once known as the Holy Inquisition. Since 2004 it has defrocked 848 priests for raping and molesting children, and meted out lesser punishments to 2,572 others (usually because they were elderly and defrocking would have left them destitute).

But the Vatican has not obliged bishops to report suspected abuse to the police because, say officials, in some places paedophile clerics could suffer barbaric punishment or execution. This argument hardly holds in, say, Italy—and yet in March the Italian bishops’ conference told its members they had no “juridical obligation” to tip off secular authorities.

Cases are still coming to light of bishops who endangered children by failing to investigate allegations or by moving paedophile clerics to other dioceses, leaving them free to abuse again. Yet the Vatican has refrained from sanctioning them. “The safeguarding of minors in his diocesan community is a sacred duty of every bishop,” says Bishop Scicluna, and episcopal negligence is a crime under canon law. But in America, says Mr Clohessy, “not one bishop has lost a single day’s pay for having put kids in harm’s way.”

That is where the continuing scandal becomes personal—and papal. Only the pope can handle penal cases against bishops under canonical law, so if the taboo against disciplining bishops is to be broken, only he can break it. But whether he intends to is hard to predict.

Allegations of sex abuse against the Vatican’s former nuncio (ambassador) to the Dominican Republic, Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, are being investigated there and in his native Poland. But in January a spokesman for prosecutors in Warsaw said the Vatican had told them that the archbishop had diplomatic immunity and was a citizen of the Vatican City State, which did not extradite its citizens. And in March Pope Francis implied in an interview that criticisms of the church’s handling of the scandal were unfair. But just a few weeks later he appointed Marie Collins, a campaigner who was assaulted by a priest as a child, to a commission he created to advise him on how to deal with sex-abuse cases. Francis’s papacy will be judged on how he treats this running sore.

Yes, I’ve had Ratzinger’s picture prominently displayed on this site and, given his long record both as the pope and as the one person responsible for handling all sex-crime cases in the Church, I strongly believed him to be incompetent at best.

However, FireThePope doesn’t just mean fire Joseph Ratzinger. FireThePope isn’t a cause to bring down one man. FireThePope is an effort to expose the entire Roman Catholic Church, as is, as fraudulent and there is no better way to do that than to start at the top.

Not your Father’s  church.

The Roman Catholic Church sets itself apart from all other religions, including Christian denominations, by claiming its head, the pope, is the successor of Peter and that Jesus anointed Peter to be the head of his church. The Church points to Matthew 16:13-20 to support this claim. Catholics conclude the Roman Catholic Church is the “one true church” of Jesus Christ and all other Protestant or non-Roman orthodox churches are inferior to it.

Roman Catholics call their church “the bride of Christ” and “Holy Mother Church”. These nicknames market the idea that Roman Catholicism dates back to the days of Jesus Christ and it – or “She”, as they say – is the very foundation of Christianity and all other religions are mere offshoots or sequels to Roman Catholicism.

Ultimately, Roman Catholicism rests solely on the supremacy of Peter and the apostles. Without the supremacy of Peter, there would be no pope. Without the supremacy of the apostles, there would be no priesthood as the Roman Church defines it. Without the superhuman powers of Catholic priests, bye-bye sacraments, indulgences, and the entire institution.

Today, let’s focus on the papacy. Following are ten reasons why there should never be another pope and, if there is, he should be completely ignored by the Catholic laity, the media, politicians, and the public at large.

Because the Vatican bases its very existence on a scene from the New Testament, it must also accept other verses of the NT in order to be consistent. Either the NT should be accepted as true, non-fictional accounts or not. Either those accounts must be taken literally or not. But, one cannot say this is a source of truth, inspired by the Holy Spirit and then pick and choose which passages the Church wants to follow or not.

1. The church of Jesus Christ in the bible was not a physical empire. Matthew 24:1-2 - ”Jesus left the temple precincts then, and his disciples came up and pointed out to him the buildings of the temple area. His comment was: ‘Do you see all these buildings? I assure you, not one stone will be left on another – it will all be torn down.’” 1 Corinthians 3:16 – “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the spirit of God dwells in you?” Also, Peter 2:5-9 – “Be yourselves as living stones built into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Jesus preached in homes and on hillsides, not in buildings. He only went in to temples to draw people out of them or to scold the church leaders. The word catholic, found in the bible with a lower-case c, means universal. In the first century, the wordchurch (also lower-case c) meant a society of men, women, and children who are spiritually – not necessarily physically – united to serve God. According to the NT, Jesus established the catholic church – a universal society of believers who would offer spiritualsacrifices. I explain below who really instituted the Roman Catholic Church, which requires material (pagan) sacrifices.

2. The church of Jesus Christ was not built upon one man. The idea that the church of Jesus was built upon one man is preposterous. Yet, that is what the Roman Church claims. Its only foundation is the notion that Peter was chosen by Jesus to be the first pope and that all popes are Peter’s successors, chosen by the Holy Spirit and infallible in all of their declarations. Roman Catholicism teaches that the pope, acting on behalf of the Church (notice the capital C indicating the Corporation) has the power and a duty to act as a mediator between the Creator and his creatures. It has been a long-held tradition that the Vatican, the Magisterium, and the clergy would interpret the bible for the laity. However, 1 Corinthians 3:11 reads, “For other foundation no one can lay, but that which has been laid, which is Jesus Christ”. According to scripture, Jesus, not Peter, is the foundation of the Christian church. Jesus is also the sole mediator, so says 1 Timothy 2:5: ”And the truth is this: ‘God is one. One also is the mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, and who gave himself ransom for all.” According to the New Testament where Catholics turn to justify the existence of their Church, there is only one mediator between God and the people and that is Jesus Christ, not Peter and not Joseph Ratzinger.

3. The church of Jesus Christ in the bible did not have a pope.The word pope is not in the bible, where the Roman Church points to as justification for itself. The early church described in the New Testament speaks of bishops who were overseers or local supervisors of the effort to spread Christianity. They were not rulers over the people. No one bishop had authority over any other. No one bishop was the head of the effort. There was a bishop in many major cities, including one in Rome. It so happened that certain Roman emperors (namely Constantine and Charlemagne) elevated the position and authority of the bishop of Rome, specifically, because they had the power to do so and because it was convenient as Rome was the seat of power. Emperors appointed bishops and abbots and usually appointed members of aristocratic families. The idea of a pope – one bishop over all others – was a corrupt power grab by murderous dictators and had nothing to do with Jesus Christ or anything in the bible.

4. The Peter of the throne was not the apostle but an impostor. Remember, the apostle Peter originally went by the name of Simon. Then, he was referred to as Simon Peter. Jesus named him Peter at the rock because the name Peter – or Petros (Greek) means rock. This Peter was from Cyprus, according to the bible. But, there is another Simon in the bible, this one from Samaria and he was a troublemaker. Locals called him Simon the

Magician. He claimed to be able to do magic tricks and held The Circus of Nero in Vaticanus Hill. Simon Magnus claimed he was God (hence, the magic) and he became a nemesis, a rival, and a thorn in the side of the apostle Peter. There was such trouble between the two that Emperor Nero set up a contest to settle their differences. Simon Magnus was killed after being thrown from his chariot and so Nero, who had favored him, had Peter arrested and thrown in jail. If there was a pope on a throne in the days of the early church, it was not Peter the Apostle but Simon the Magician. Simon sat on a throne; Peter never did. Simon claimed to be God; Peter never did. Simon claimed to have supernatural powers; Peter never did. Simon Magnus even started going by the name Peter in order to confuse people. They both had the same name, they both died in the same year – 67 A.D., and they both had spent time in Rome. The proof that the Simon of Samaria, not Cyprus, sat on the throne in Rome is the documentation that Magnus stayed in Rome for many years at a time while the apostle came and went quite often.

5. The apostle Peter never considered himself God or Jesus Christ. Again, the idea of the papacy rests on the supremacy of Peter. The Roman Church claims the pope is “Christ’s (sole) representative on earth”. The Peter whom the popes are supposed to have succeeded was married with at least one child – a daughter. He never sat on a throne and he never claimed to have magic powers or to be infallible. He never claimed to be better or more important than the other apostles or early leaders of the Christian church. He never dressed in fancy clothes, he never wore a ring to be kissed, and he never insisted on the red carpet treatment. Acts 10:25-27: “As Peter entered, Cornelius went to meet him, dropped to his knees before him and bowed low. Peter said, ‘Get up! I am only a man myself.’” When Nero sentenced Peter to death by crucifixion, Peter insisted on hanging on the cross upside down because he was unworthy to die as Jesus died. Peter the apostle, claimed by the Church as the first pope was never a pope and his philosophy and practices, according to the New Testament, were a far contrast to those of the papacy no matter who is holding the title.

6. The Roman Catholic Church was not established until the 4th Century. Roman Catholics claim Peter of the bible was the first pope and that there is an unbroken line of popes stretching from biblical times to present-day. This claim is nothing but a re-writing of history. The Church needs that lineage in order to justify itself and the papacy yet it does not have the facts on its side so they have to create a new reality. What the Church

has done is go back and list anyone who was a bishop of Rome as a pope. The actual papacy didn’t begin until the Roman Catholic Church began and that wasn’t until the 4th Century with Pope Constantine I – the emperor – who ruled from the “chair of St. Peter” from 306-337. Constantine came to the rescue of Christians who were being persecuted by Emperor Diocletian. It’s not that he was overcome by compassion but realized he could take political advantage from the growing number of Christians. This ties the pagan Roman Empire to the Catholic Church whose members also worship objects and offer material sacrifices.

7. The papacy was on life support as recently as 1870. In the mid-19th Century, there was an effort to unify Italy which was split in two by the Papal States governed by the pope, then Pope Pius IX (the one who dreamed up Immaculate Conception). Victor Emmanuel II, the new King of Italy, had seized all of the Church-controlled territory except a small segment of Rome. Napoleon, who had previously been an ally of Emmanuel, protected the pope and by having some of his troops stand guard at the Vatican. When the Franco-Prussia War intensified, Napoleon pulled his troops out of Rome, leaving the pope defenseless. The Italian troops moved in and the pope lost all of his temporal (civil) power minus rule over the tiny territory of the Vatican. Emmanuel allowed the pope to keep the Vatican and freed him from Italian rule but the pope was defiant. Pius IX refused to recognize Emmanuel’s new kingdom and he voluntarily kept himself a prisoner of the Vatican. He cried anti-Catholic bias until support and donations poured in for him, including from Catholics in America. The empire of the Roman Church was all but lost in 1870. It took more deception to keep it alive.

8. The papacy was corruptly propped back up by a fascist dictator. In the 1920′s, the Italian government wished to settle its differences with the Church. At the time, the Prime Minister of Italy was Benito Mussolini.

He conspired with the Vatican to shut out populist factions in the country in order to amass more power and control for himself. The Vatican silenced priests who favored a more democratic government. In return, Mussolini gifted the Church by officially recognizing the Vatican as an independent and sovereign city-state. Within the borders of Italy, popes would receive diplomatic immunity and the Church would receive financial reparations for its loss of the Papal States. Also, Roman Catholicism would be the one state religion in Italy. These agreements were called the Lateran Pacts and they are what revived the much weakened papacy. Mussolini would go on to become one of history’s most brutal dictators. Today, Vatican City, the whole 0.2 square miles of it, is recognized by the United Nations as a sovereign city-state of which the pope is head.

9. The pope is an absolute monarch at a time when most educated and reasonable human beings believe in freedom, democracy, and accountability. In 2011, the world witnessed what is now referred to as The Arab Spring. Ordinary people protested – many to their deaths – for freedom, respect, and democratic elections. Many citizens of some nations in the Middle East had been oppressed for generations and they finally decided it was time to take a stand against tyranny. It has been said there is a natural hunger to live freely, no matter what part of the world one lives. The pope is an absolute monarch, only one of a few that still exist and certainly the most powerful. As such, and because he enjoys diplomatic immunity both in Italy and out, he is accountable to no one. The pope is elected but not by the people he represents as in a democracy. He is elected by the same men whom he appointed to the College of Cardinals. Once a pope takes office, he is unaccountable to anyone inside the Church or out. This type of power is contrary to what the New Testament described when Jesus turned tables on the clergy. The pope, like Simon Magnus, claims to be God. Only someone with a God-complex would claim to be above the law and every other human being.

10. The papacy is not inspired by the Holy Spirit. If anything, it would be inspired by the spirit of Lucifer. As construction workers ready the Vatican chimney for the upcoming puffs of white smoke or black,

rational human beings are expected to believe that the Holy Spirit is guiding the process of the papal conclave. When cardinals vote a certain way, we are told, it was because the Holy Spirit told them to. It’s time for a reality check. Many of the men who will be voting – or running – for the next pope have blood on their hands – blood ofchildren. Yet, we are supposed to believe they have an inside track to the Holy Spirit. From the beginning of the Roman Catholic Church, throughout its history, and including today, Roman Catholicism has been a corrupt empire disguised as a Christian religion. I’ve heard many people credit it merely because “it has been around for 2,000 years”. It hasn’t been around that long and does it matter that it has only survived as long has it has because it has succeeded in fooling gullible people? Does it matter that it has grown as large as it has because many of its converts joined only under the threat of death? Does it matter than the majority of Catholics were entered into the Church before the age of reason? Catholics are quick to remind us of “all the good the Church does”. There isn’t a tyrant in history that couldn’t claim the same. Evil almost always presents itself in disguise – as something good. When deception is the foundation of an institution, no amount of superficial acts that come out of it can make it good. Deeds and institutions can only be good if they are based in truth. Like it or not, the spirit that is guiding the Roman Catholic Church isn’t holy, it is evil. And the only way to kill a serpent is by chopping off its head.

The Failure of the Sacraments

There’s an elephant quietly sitting in the nave that everyone on all sides of the clergy sex abuse crisis have been diligently ignoring, even the victims themselves. No clergy or even would-be reformers have really remarked on it yet, although it should be more obvious with each and every sad story. More importantly, it is a troubling issue that touches on the very heart and soul of Catholicism.

The monstrous truth is simply this: what the clergy sex abuse crisis clearly demonstrates is that the sacramental system has failed.

This is not just a case of hierarchical reneging of responsibility.There’s more to this than some bad apples. This is nothing that a few reforms can fix, some screening of seminarians or more pastoral responses by bishops. It is nothing less than a fundamental challenge to the entire Catholic Church, and it shows that the spiritual principles the whole structure is supposedly based on simply do not work.

Think about it. The offenders here are Roman Catholic priests, highly trained men. But unlike other professionals, these men are supposedly set apart and dedicated to lives of the spirit. They claim to have the power to forgive sins and make God appear.

They not only administer the sacraments to others, but also receive them themselves daily. That means, among other things, frequent confession to other priests. Moreover, many of these men belong to religious orders or are otherwise under close spiritual direction. They are supposed to confide everything to their confessors and superiors and to obey them unquestioningly.

So what went wrong? When an abusive priest goes to confession, does he start, “Bless me, father, for I have sinned: I buggered an altar boy three times this week”? And does the confessor tell him to say 3 Our Fathers and 4 Hail Marys and not to do it again?

According to their own theory, confessors have the power to forgive sins, but also to refuse to do so if sorrow is insufficient. Moreover, they are to appoint penances – if they wish, they can require satisfaction or significant signs of reform from the penitent before absolution. Some sins – such as solicitation for sex in the confessional – are even deemed so serious that only higher prelates, sometimes only the Pope or his appointed delegate can forgive them.

Yet the abusers continue to abuse. So are the sexually active priestslying to their confessors? This would mean that not only do the perpetrating priests remain in a state of mortal sin and are automatically excommunicated, they perform the sacraments in that state which is itself a grave sacrilege.

Or, even worse, are all the abusive priests linked? Do they only go to confession to like-minded perps who will understand? Is there then an organized network of sexually perpetrating priests, all busily enabling each other? This adds collusion and conspiracy to the sinand would indicate that the very structure itself is rotten to the core.

The evidence available suggests that perhaps both scenarios are true to varying degrees in different situations. Either way, however, the result is much the same.

The sacraments are meant to unite believers with Christ. Not just to remove the accumulations of sin like the weekly laundry, but togradually improve the recipient. They are intended to sanctify and uplift the faithful, increase devotion to God, charity to fellow humans, and moral stamina in the face of evil.

If the sacraments actually worked like this, wouldn’t we hear ennobling stories of clerical reform, of some molester inspired to truly repent and devote himself to the cause? But rather, the stories are depressingly the same, of priests caught time and again, transferred, treated, and now finally, laicized often against their will, with no regret or even acknowledgement of their evil.

What this means, each person must decide in their own conscience. But perhaps the fall off in confessions over the years itself tells the story. Why should anyone, lay or not, risk a ritual that seems so impotent in promoting reform and may, instead of granting grace, actually expose them to greater human wickedness?
